Virtual inertia controllers (VICs) for wind turbine generators (WTGs) have been recently developed to compensate the reduction of inertia in power systems. However, VICs can induce low frequency torsional oscillations of the drive train of WTGs. This paper addresses this issue and develops a new nonlinear VIC based on objective holographic feedbacks theory. This approach allows transforming the original nonlinear control into a completely controllab.e system of Brunovsky’s type. Simulation results under various scenarios demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms existing VICs in terms of suppression of low frequency drive-train torsional oscillations, enhancement of system frequency nadir as well as fast and smooth recovery of WTG rotor speed to the original MPP point before the disturbance. One drawback of contactless current measurement by magnetic sensor is that its detected results can be easily affected by the superposition of the external magnetic interference. Damping the effect of the noise is complex and delicate without the knowledge of the interference. The usage of magnetic shielding is one potent way to compensate the shortcoming. However, complete magnetic shielding fails to provide the shielding for the shielding only happens within the material. Therefore, in this paper, a separated double-layer structure with the gap is proposed for large current measurement with strong magnetic noise from random places. The ambition is to keep the targeted magnetic field within the shielding stable even when exposed to strong magnetic interference environment. Parameters of the designed structure are investigated and the validation of the structure is confirmed by finite element analysis method when the magnitude of the current under measurement ranging up to 1000 A. From FEA method, when the interference is at arbitrary places around the conductor, the standard deviation without and with noise is less than 0.13, authenticating the efficacy of this shielding structure. © 2018 IEEE.

In this paper, by improving the control strategy of virtual oscillator, a non-linear model for stability analysis is established, and a solution to the circulation problem in parallel system is proposed. The external equivalent of the virtual oscillator is the RLC resonant circuit. In this paper, through digital programming, the module is established with dual characteristics of controllab.e current source and controllab.e resistor, in which non-linear control is introduced. Through the phase-locked loop to feedback the phase change of the current and voltage in the line, it eliminates the circulating current brought by the parallel operation of the inverters. In this paper, Simulink simulation is used to control the parallel operation of two inverters with the same capacity and without interconnecting multiple lines. By conducting an experiment of voltage and current stability in the case of load-mutation, and conducting an experiment of circulating current suppression in the line with inductance is carried out to verify the feasibility of the system plan.

Sag and galloping poses serious issues for uninterrupted operation of overhead high voltage transmission lines (HVTLs) under extreme weather conditions. This paper presents a novel approach to detect and estimate the change in sag and galloping alongside its feature characteristics (amplitude, frequency and degree of rotation). These parameters are estimated by means of magnetic field measurement with a sensor installed at support tower, and phase current measurement at the substation. It is observed that a variation in sag and conductor galloping induces a variation of magnetic field at sensor for same current amplitude. To this effect, galloping motion and magnetic field emanated from phase conductors during motion is first simulated. Then, two robust algorithms are designed to compare the simulated and measured magnetic fields to detect and quantify the change due to sag and galloping motion. This paper used empirical means to optimize our algorithms which are derived from integration solution provided by Biot-Savart law for magnetic field calculation of current carrying conductors. This reduces computational time for each iteration by 19e4 with error bounds well within the range of IEEE-644 Standard. The algorithms are validated by numerical simulations under various operating conditions.

In smart substation, the interrelationship among different devices is complex. The information in a smart substation is not transmitted through point to point communication, but through a novel communication network. Existing auxiliary systems for maintenance and inspection in intelligent substation cannot visualize the flow of packets in the implementation of specific function in secondary system. This paper, by analyzing the contents and requirements for maintenance and inspection in intelligent substation, designs a visualized function correlation. The function correlation library is built based on the principle of relay protection and expert experience. This library can show the interrelationship of the packets, when one specific function is triggered during the normal operation of substation, Sugiyama algorithm is used to illustrate the complete process of this function implementation. © 2015 IEEE.

This experimental investigation is focused to assess a Tunnel Magneto-Resistive (TMR) and Anisotropic Magneto-Resistive (AMR) sensor for power system magnetic field measurement applications as in current sensing, transmission line monitoring, detection and classification of Transient Magnetic Field (TMF) interference in substations. For measurement applications, AMR sensors have the limitations of low field range up to ±6 Gauss impractical for high magnetic field measurements, disorientation in sensitivity at exposure to field over ±20 Gauss recurrent in outdoor applications and high power consumption not appealing for portable devices. Thus, a complete testing system is established to identify if TMR sensors are a superior candidate for our application domain. For this, both of the sensors were exposed to uniform and transient magnetic field. Experimentation with identical conditioning circuitry confirms the superior performance of TMR sensor over AMR sensor in terms of twice the sensitivity, 200 times reduced power consumption and 5 times more field range. Additionally, in a TMF event, AMR sensor response depicts a time lag of 15 microseconds whereas TMR sensor only lags by 10 nanoseconds. Magnetic fields above field range of AMR sensor disorient the sensor until recalibrated;to cater for this a practical recalibration pulse blinds the sensor for 4 milliseconds once initiated. © 2015 IEEE.

Because of non-coherent sampling, Fourier transform when used for the measurement of phase difference is insufficient in terms of the accuracy and real-time. This paper starts with the analysis of the relationship among the phase difference error, the frequency skew and the true phase difference. Then a mean filter algorithm, which can eliminate the phase difference error as far as possible by taking advantage of the symmetry of the function, is proposed. Comparing with traditional Fourier transform based phase difference measurement algorithm, the proposed algorithm can filter out the error well, improving the accuracy of phase difference measurement.
