In this paper, an improved dead-beat controller (DBC) for a single-phase LC-coupling hybrid active power filter (LC-HAPF) is proposed to achieve both low steady-state error and fast transient response. The conventional DBC has an inherent discretized and predictive error, which can increase the steady-state error. Thus, a signal correction technique is used to reduce the steady-state error. Moreover, the improved DBC is implemented with a coupling capacitor voltage observer to replace the voltage sensor, thus reducing the system cost. After that, the stability analysis and parameter design of the proposed improved DBC for the LC-HAPF are given in detail. Subsequently, to verify the effectiveness of the improved DBC, the simulation results are provided in comparison to the conventional DBC. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper focuses on multifractal characterization and feature extraction of nonstationary temporal signals, particularly the turn-on transients for radio transmitter classification purposes. A transient signal contaminated by noise can be considered as an output from a chaotic dynamical system. The trajectory of such a system in phase space is often attracted to a bounded fractal object called strange attractor. Transient signals are preprocessed to obtain the corresponding strange attractor in phase space. Multifractal measures based on a generalized entropy are then applied to the strange attractor and features are extracted in terms of a fractal dimension spectrum. Experimental results show that there exists a strange attractor for the transient signal and the fractal dimension spectrum can characterize a transient signal uniquely, even with a relatively short time duration.

This paper describes the use of single-scale measures to determine the level of randomness and complexity of a sequence. Such sequences originate from either various pseudorandom number generators or natural sources of white and coloured broadband noise. The paper provides a study of seven classes of sequences using the algorithmic complexity measures (the Kolmogorov-Chaitin complexity) and the probabilistic entropy-based measures (Shannon entropy). The study shows the fundamental differences between the two measures. The single-scale measures are adequate to determine the relative randomness and complexity of a sequence. However, they are not capable of revealing the hidden patterns in scale-invariant (self-affine) sequences. This paper identifies the need for new measures for such self-affine stochastic and chaotic sequences, and investigates if the existing techniques could be modified for the multiscale measures.

As such, the choice of arithmetic can lead to substantial power savings.

Compared with the conventional active power filter (APF), the static var compensator coupling hybrid active power filter (SVC-HAPF) has distinct characteristics of low DC-link operating voltage, which can lower the system and operational costs. It also has a wider operational range than the conventional hybrid active power filter (HAPF). In this paper, a harmonic state-space (HSS) modeling is firstly proposed to address the nonlinearity issue of the SVC-HAPF. The HSS based SVC-HAPF model is linear time-invariant (LTI), which enables the optimal control techniques. Then, the linear matrix inequality (LMI) based H∞ optimal control design is proposed, which finds the optimal controller parameters via convex optimization algorithm. The proposed controller for the SVC-HAPF achieves high steady-state accuracy, fast transient response, and fixed switching frequency simultaneously. Finally, simulation and experimental results are also provided to verify the effectiveness and performance of the optimal controller for the SVC-HAPF in comparison with the recent developed state-of-the-art multi-quasi-proportional-resonant (MQPR) controller, which shows superior control performances. © 2017 CPSS.

Multimedia involves a myriad of data and multidimensional signals, including not only plain and formatted text, but also mathematical and other symbols, tables, vector and bitmap graphics, images, sound, animation, video, and interactive virtual reality objects. compression of such signals is usually necessary to fit them into the available communications channels and digital storage, or for data mining. This paper provides an overview of important compression methods and techniques, including lossless entropy coding techniques designed to reduce the redundancy in the critical multimedia material, as well as lossy coding techniques designed to preserve the relevancy of the noncritical multimedia material. Modern lossy techniques often employ wavelets, wavelet packets, fractals, and neural networks. Progressive image transmission is also employed to deliver the material quickly. The paper also addresses several approaches to blind separation of signal from noise (denoising) to improve the compression, and to the difficult question of objective and subjective image quality assessment through complexity metrics.

In this work, we propose a small-size and low-cost phase shifter based on defective microstrip structure (DMS) technique, with a modified reconfigurable unit cell (MRDMS) for WLAN applications at 5.2 GHz. The phase shifter is made up of an MRDMS unit, created by etching slots on a simple microstrip line with an outline of three bridges. To further increase the phase shift, a T-shaped slot is introduced in the central bridge and PIN diodes on the edges of the outer bridges are used. By switching the diodes on and off, the MRDMS unit cell is capable of operating in a variety of different modes to give a phase shift of 37.71° at 5.2 GHz. Additionally, MRDMS unit cells are cascaded for higher phase shift as required. Cascaded two- and four-cell phase shifters were designed and simulated in HFSS and a parametric study on various parameters was conducted to show the detailed operating properties of the proposed phase shifter. Compared to previously reported research, the present study shows that two cascaded phase shifters introduce 75.08° phase shifts and 151.75°, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the maximum phase shift obtained by a phase shifter based on MRDMS. © 2023 IEEE.

Claude Shannon, born on April 30, 1916, pioneered the mathematical theory of communication in his 1948 paper in the Bell System Technical Journal. Information theory has since provided the foundation for the digital revolution in communications technology. In addition, it has provided a powerful framework for investigating the fundamental limitations of naturally occurring communications, particularly in biological systems. This two-part special issue of the IEEE Transactions on Molecular, Biological, and Multi-Scale Communications honors Shannon's centennial by highlighting recent progress in biological and bio-inspired information theory. Part I includes papers on applications of multivariate mutual information to data clustering, statistical thermodynamics of nonequilibrium chemical processes, information processing in neuronal systems, biochemical signal transduction systems, DNA sequencing, and the swarming of insects. © 2017 IEEE.

Factor inverse matched filtering (FIMF) and factor inverse filtering (FIF) are signal processing techniques used to obtain desired signal responses. Both are especially useful procedures for ‘‘pulse‐compression’’ processing and channel measurements. The theory is developed for a simple channel and known noise power spectral density so that comparison may be made with matched filtering. Expressions for the pulse‐compression energy gain, nonflatness loss NFL, and total performance are derived. The NFL is useful in selecting the best among practical pulse‐compression modulations, and with FIMF and FIF, has been used extensively since 1974 by the authors and their co‐workers in underwater acoustic propagation measurements and ocean acoustictomography.

Orthogonal subspace projection (OSP) has been successfully applied to hyperspectral image processing. In order for OSP to be effective, the number of bands must be no less than that of signatures to be classified so that there are sufficient dimensions to accommodate individual signatures to discriminate one another via orthogonal projection. This intrinsic constraint is not an issue for hyperspectral images since they generally have hundreds of bands which are more than the number of signatures resident within images. It, however, may not be true for multispectral images where the number of signatures to be classified is greater than the number of bands such as 3-band SPOT images. This paper presents a generalization of OSP, called generalized OSP (GOSP) to relax this constraint in such a fashion that OSP can be extended to multispectral image processing in an unsupervised fashion. The idea of GOSP is to create new additional band images nonlinearly from original multispectral images so as to achieve sufficient dimensionality prior to OSP classification. It is then followed by an unsupervised OSP classifier, called automatic target detection and classification algorithm (ATDCA) for classification. The effectiveness of the proposed GOSP is evaluated by a 3-band SPOT and a 4-band Landsat MSS images. The experimental results has shown that GOSP significantly improves the classification performance of OSP. © 1998 SPIE.
