This paper presents a new precoding approach based on a genetic algorithm to search for coded codewords applied to a multi-user MIMO system. The main idea hinges on the definition of coded codewords in which no codebook is previously stored at transmitter and receiver. In this manner, the precoder aims to maximize the sum capacity in order to solve the optimization problem by searching for the best coded codewords for all users. The performance evaluation and complexity analysis show that our approach offers outstanding performance and low complexity compared with the multi-user MIMO precoding scheme based on the Grassmannian codebook. The proposed method uses a multiplier-free precoding suitable for VLSI implementation.

Spectral unmixing is a fast growing area in hyperspectral image analysis. Many algorithms have been recently developed to retrieve pure spectral components (endmembers) and determine their abundance fractions in mixed pixels, which dominate hyperspectral images. However, possible connections between spectral unmixing concepts and classification algorithms have been rarely investigated. In this work, we propose a new method to perform semi-supervised hyperspectral image classification exploiting the information retrieved with spectral unmixing. The proposed method integrates a well-established discriminative classifier (multinomial logistic regression) with linear spectral unmixing. Furthermore, the proposed method uses a new active sampling approach which takes into account spatial context when generating new samples. The proposed method is experimentally validated using both simulated and real hyperspectral data sets. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper investigates the potential uses of graphene nanomechanical devices for NEMS applications fabricated using Helium Ion Microscope (HIM). Suspended nanomechanical graphene drum structures of diameter (~2 - 3 μm) and thickness ranging from few atomic layers (~10 Å) to about 11 nm have been fabricated and characterized using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The initial suspension profile and the thickness of the fabricated structures have been obtained using AFM. FEM results suggest that these structures can vibrate in the range of several MHz. Their small size and the higher operating frequencies make them well suitable for mass sensing applications with sensitivities greater than 10 -21 g Hz -1 which is more than three orders of magnitude improvement over silicon based structures. The initial suspended graphene membranes have been patterned using HIM to obtain multiple z-axis flexures with sub-10nm feature sizes.

In this paper, we compare registration results obtained using different diffusion maps extracted from diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Fractional Anisotropy (FA) and Ellipsoidal Area Ratio (EAR) are two diffusion maps (indices) that may be used for image registration. First, we use FA maps to find deformation matrix and register diffusion weighted images. Then, we use EAR maps and finally we use both of FA and EAR maps to register diffusion weighted images. The difference between FA values before deformation and after registration using the FA alone or EAR alone has a median of 0.57 and using both of them has a median of 0.29. Therefore, the results of registration using both of the FA and EAR indices are superior to those obtained using only one of them alone.

Hyperspectral image classification is a very active research area. Over the last years, several advanced feature extraction techniques have been integrated in processing chains intended for this purpose. In the context of supervised classification, the good generalization capability of machine learning techniques such as the support vector machine (SVM) can still be enhanced by an adequate selection of the number of features to be used for classification purposes. This number depends on the size of the available training set, which opens the way for the incorporation of supervised techniques for feature extraction in addition to more classic unsupervised ones. In this paper, we particularly investigate the issue of how many (and what type of) features can be used effectively for SVM-based classification. For this purpose, we consider different types of feature extraction strategies - unsupervised and supervised - in the context of different types of processing chains (all based on the SVM as the baseline classifier). We also explore the role of different dimensionality estimation techniques. Our study, conducted using a variety of hyperspectral scenes collected by different instruments, provides practical observations regarding the utility and number of features needed for different analysis scenarios.

Wearable inertial systems have recently been used to track human movement in and outside of the laboratory. Continuous monitoring of human movement can provide valuable information relevant to individual's level of physical activity and functional ability. Traditionally, orientation has been calculated by integrating the angular velocity from gyroscopes. However, a small drift in the measured velocity leads to large integration errors that grow with time. To compensate for that drift, complementary data from accelerometers are normally fused into the tracking systems using the Kalman or extended Kalman filter (EKF). In this study, we combine kinematic models designed for control of robotic arms with the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) to continuously estimate the angles of human shoulder and elbow using two wearable sensors. This methodology can easily be generalized to track other human joints. We validate the method with an optical motion tracking system and demonstrate correlation consistently greater than 0.9 between the two systems.

We present developments in the search for engineered radio emissions from advanced extraterrestrial life. Our group is currently engaging in both targeted and sky survey searches for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), covering a wide variety of narrow-band and pulsed signal types. We are also developing new SETI instrumentation, designed to be flexible, modular and to employ commodity components that lower cost and enhance upgradability. Here we will discuss the status of these observational and engineering projects, as well as prospects for future radio SETI endeavors. © 2011 IEEE.

Low spatial resolution is a major limitation for remote sensing classification, especially in a urban environment. In this work, we will focus on the simulation of urban area environment at a low spatial resolution, comparable to the new hyperspectral sensors that will be launched in the next few years. The aim is to better understand the possibility offered by the new sensors, in a challenging scenario like the one represented by a highly mixed image. Particular attention is placed on the characteristics of the sensor EnMap, produced by DLR. The experiments conducted on a real data set confirm the challenges posed by low spatial resolution when analyzing a urban environment.

In traffic monitoring applications, traffic speed is an important parameter of traffic management. The method for traffic speed measurement using video based on Spatio-Temporal (ST) model and frequency domain analysis is proposed in this paper. This method is designed to be able to measure the traffic speed in every pattern of road. The novel of proposed method is unfolding the edge information on ST model and analyse them in frequency domain to determine traffic speed. The proposed method is evaluated by compare with actual speed. The traffic speed is measured accurately 97.1%.

Anomaly detection in hyperspectral data has received a lot of attention for various applications. The aim of anomaly detection is to detect pixels in the hyperspectral datacube whose spectra differ significantly from the background spectra. In anomaly detection no prior knowledge about the target is assumed. Anomaly detection methods in general estimate the spectra of the background (locally or globally) and then detect anomalies as pixels with a large spectral distance w.r.t. the determined background spectra. Many types of anomaly detectors have been proposed in literature, each depending on several parameters. The aim of this paper is to compare the results of different types of anomaly detection when they are applied to scenes with different complexity: urban scenes with different complexity and rural scenes with sub-pixel anomalies. This paper only considers hyperspectral data in the VNIR and SWIR part of the EM spectrum (λ = 0.4-2.5μm).
