A computationally efficient algorithm for multiple source localization, using the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm, for the wideband sources in the near field of a sensor array/area, is presented. The basic idea is to decompose the observed sensor data, which is a superimposition of multiple sources, into individual components in the frequency domain and then estimate the corresponding location parameters associated with each component separately. Instead of the conventional alternating projection method, we propose to adopt the EM algorithm in this paper; our method involves two steps, namely Expectation (E-step) and Maximization (M-step). In the E-step, the individual incident source waveforms are estimated. Then, in the M-step, the maximum likelihood estimates of the source location parameters are obtained. These two steps are executed iteratively and alternatively until the pre-defined convergence is reached. The computational complexity comparison between our proposed EM algorithm and the existing alternating projection scheme is investigated. It is shown through Monte Carlo simulations that the computational complexity of the proposed EM algorithm is significantly lower than that of the conventional alternating projection algorithm.

Rate filters are used to estimate the mean event rate of many biomedical signals that can be modeled as point processes. Historically these filters have been designed using principles from two distinct fields. signal processing principles are used to optimize the filter's frequency response. Kernel estimation principles are typically used to optimize the asymptotic statistical properties. This paper describes a design methodology that combines these principles from both fields to optimize the frequency response subject to constraints on the filter's order, symmetry, time-domain ripple, DC gain, and minimum impulse response. Initial results suggest that time-domain ripple and a negative impulse response are necessary to design a filter with a reasonable frequency response. This suggests that some of the common assumptions about the properties of rate filters should be reconsidered

A network of n communication links operating over a shared wireless channel is considered. Power management is crucial to such interference-limited networks to improve the aggregate throughput. We consider sum-rate maximization of the network by optimum power allocation when conventional linear receivers (without interference cancellation) are utilized. It is shown that in the case of n=2 links, the optimum power allocation strategy is such that either both links use their maximum power or one of them uses its maximum power and the other keeps silent. An asymptotic analysis for large n is carried out to show that in a Rayleigh fading channel the average sum-rate scales at least as log(n). This is obtained by deriving an on-off power allocation strategy. The same scaling law is obtained in the work of Gowaikar et al., where the number of links, their end-points (source-destination pairs), and the relay nodes are optimally chosen all by a central controller. However, our proposed strategy can be implemented in a decentralized fashion for any number of links, arbitrary transmitter-receiver pairs, and without any relay nodes. It is shown that the proposed power allocation scheme is optimum among all on-off power allocation strategies in the sense that no other strategies can achieve an average sum-rate of higher order.

In this paper, a downlink scenario in which a single-antenna base station communicates with K single antenna users, over a time-correlated fading channel, is considered. It is assumed that channel state information is perfectly known at each receiver, while the statistical characteristics of the fading process and the fading gain at the beginning of each frame are known to the transmitter. By evaluating the random coding error exponent of the time-correlated fading channel, we show that there is an optimal codeword length which maximizes the throughput. We examine the throughput of conventional scheduling that transmits to the user with the maximum signal to noise ratio using both fixed length codewords and variable length codewords. Although optimizing the codeword length improves the performance, it is shown that using the conventional scheduling, a gap of Omega(radiclog log log K) exists between the achievable throughput and the maximum possible throughput of the system. We propose a simple scheduling that considers both the signal to noise ratio and the channel time variation. In this case, among users which their fading gain is above a threshold, user that has minimum channel time variation is selected. We show that by using this scheduling, the gap between the achievable throughput and maximum throughput of the system approaches o(1).

Uniform M-PAM signal transmission over AWGN channel with two-level interference where the sequence of interference symbols is known causally at the transmitter is considered. Shannon's theorem for channels with side information at the transmitter is used to formulate the capacity of the channel. It is shown that by using exactly M out of M 2 inputs of the associated channel the capacity is achievable. Based on this, the general structure of a communication system with optimum precoding for the channel under consideration is proposed

The closed-loop transmit diversity technique is used to improve the performance of the downlink channel in MIMO communication systems. The WCDMA standard endorsed by 3GPP adopts two modes of downlink closed-loop schemes based on partial channel state information. The information is fed back from the mobile unit to the base station through a low-rate uncoded feedback bit stream. Previously it was addressed the efficient reconstruction of the beamforming weight in the presence of feedback error, with the constraint of a constant transmit power. In this article, the issue of feedback delay is also considered. Using joint source-channel coding techniques, a reconstruction algorithm is introduced to improve the performance of mode 1 of 3GPP in the presence of feedback error and delay, by taking advantage of the redundancy available in the bitstream of channel state information. We also introduce the novel concept of blind antenna verification. It can substitute the conventional antenna weight verification process without the need to any training data. The performance is examined within a simulated 3GPP framework. It is demonstrated that the proposed algorithms have substantial gain over the conventional method for low, moderate and high mobile speeds. The proposed approaches are applicable to other feedback schemes as well.

Numerous attempts are being made to develop machines that could act not only autonomously, but also in an increasingly intelligent and cognitive manner. Such cognitive machines ought to be aware of their environments which include not only other machines, but also human beings. Such machines ought to understand the meaning of information in more human-like ways by grounding knowledge in the physical wortti and in the machines' own goals. The motivation for developing such machines range from self-evidenced practical reasons such as the expense of computer maintenance, to wearable computing in health care, and gaining a better understanding of the cognitive capabilities of the human brain. To achieve such an ambitious goal requires solutions to many problems, ranging from human perception, attention, concept creation, cognition, consciousness, executive processes guided by emotions and value, and symbiotic conversational human-machine interactions. An important component of this cognitive machine research includes multiscale measures and analysis. This paper presents definitions of cognitive machines, representations of processes, as well as their measurements, measures and analysis. It provides examples from current research, including cognitive radio, cognitive radar, and cognitive monitors.

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) employs a set of subcarriers for the information symbol transmission in parallel via the multipath fading channels. Due to its spectral efficiency and robustness over multipath channels, OFDM has been adopted for broadband communications. However, for high-speed mobility, the time-varying channels pose a performance limitation to the wireless OFDM systems. In this paper, we investigate the OFDM system performance in the time-varying channels where the intercarrier interference (ICI) occurs;we study the impacts of the time-varying multipath fadings together with the multiple Doppler spreads. According to our analysis and simulation results, the maximum OFDM symbol normalized Doppler frequency must be less than 0.04 to achieve the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR)=20dB or larger. As the maximum OFDM symbol normalized Doppler frequency increases, the OFDM system performance degrades dramatically. Different irreducible symbol error rate (SER) floors about 10{sup}(-2) for QPSK-OFDM schemes and 10{sup}(-1) for 16QAM-OFDM schemes would arise in case that the maximum OFDM symbol normalized Doppler frequency is fixed at 0.06.

Automatic modulation classification (AMC) is a scheme to automatically identify the modulation types of the transmitted signals by observing the received data samples in the presence of noise and fading channels. Nowadays, AMC plays an important role in both cooperative and non-cooperative communication applications. Very often, multipath fading channels result in the severe AMC performance degradation or induce large classification errors. The negative impacts of multipath fading channels on AMC have been discussed in the existing literature but no solution has ever been proposed so far to the best of our knowledge. In this paper, we propose a new robust AMC algorithm, which applies higher-order statistics (HOS) in a generic framework for blind channel estimation and pattern recognition. The advantage of our new algorithm is that, by carefully designing the essential features needed for AMC, we don't really have to acquire the complete channel information and therefore it can be feasible without any a priori information in practice. The Monte Carlo simulation results show that our new AMC algorithm can achieve the much better classification accuracy than the existing AMC techniques.

In this paper, the performance of five classifiers in P300 speller paradigm are compared. Theses classifiers are Linear Support Vector Machine (LSVM), Gaussian Support Vector Machine (GSVM), Neural Network (NN), Fisher Linear Discriminant (FLD), and Kernel Fisher Discriminant (KFD). In classification of P300 waves, there has been a trend to use SVM classifiers. Although they have shown a good performance, in this paper, it is shown that the FLD classifiers outperform the SVM classifiers. FLD classifier uses only ten channels of the recorded electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. This makes them a very good candidate for real-time applications. In addition, FLD approach does not need any optimization similar to other methods. In addition, in this paper, it is shown that the efficiency of using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for feature reduction results in decreasing the time for the classification and increasing the accuracy
