We propose a new joint multiple matrix diagonalization algorithm for robust blind beamforming. This new algorithm is based on the iterative eigen-decomposition of cumulant matrices. Therefore it can avoid the stability and misadjustment problems arising among the conventional steepest-descent approaches for constant-modulus or cumulant optimization. Our Monte Carlo simulations show that our proposed algorithm significantly outperforms the JADE algorithm based on the Givens rotation for PSK source signals in terms of signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio for a wide variety of signal-to-noise ratios

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) uses backreflected light to provide micron-resolution, cross-sectional scans of biological tissues useful in diagnosing, monitoring, and studying glaucoma. The ratio of the area of the central portion of the optic nerve (the cup) to that of the complete nerve (the disk) is an indicator of ocular health. Measuring this cup-to-disk ratio accurately requires precise detection of the cup and disk limits in scans traversing the optic nervehead. A hybrid edge-supported boundary detector first finds the contour separating the retina and optic nervehead (on one side) from the vitreous humor on the other. We then partition this boundary using a model-based technique to identify the optic cup. The lower retinal-choroid boundaries are extracted using Markov models first derived by Koozekanani et al.. The endpoints of these lower boundaries represent the limits of the optic disk. Points along the Markov path are then represented in a feature space comprising two low order unitary transform coefficients and a measure of differential edge strength. By minimizing the trace of the within-class scatter matrices for optic nerve and retina, optimal estimates of the nervehead extent are found. We present thorough experimental results to establish the stability and robustness of the technique, as well as its performance limitations.

An FIR cascade structure for adaptive linear prediction is studied in which each stage FIR filter is independently adapted using an LMS algorithm. Theoretical analysis shows that the cascade performs a linear prediction in a way of successive refinement and each stage tries to obliterate the dominant mode of its input. Experimental results show that the performance of the cascade LMS predictor are in good agreement with our theoretical analysis.

Classification of high-resolution hyperspectral data is investigated. Previously, in classification of high-resolution panchromatic data, simple morphological profiles have been constructed with a repeated use of morphological opening and closing operators with a structuring element of increasing size, starting with the original panchromatic image. This approach has recently been extended for hyperspectral data. In the extension, principal components of the hyperspectral imagery have been computed in order to produce an extended morphological profile. In this paper, we investigate the use of independent components instead of principal components in extended morphological profiles, i.e., selected independent components are used as base images for an extended morphological profile. In the proposed approach, the extended morphological profiles based on the independent components are used as inputs to a neural network classifier. In experiments, a hyperspectral data sets from an urban area in Pavia, Italy is classified.

The estimation of channel delays along with their respective complex channel coefficients of different users constitutes the first stage in the detection process at the receiving base station in a DS-CDMA communication system. A multiuser steepest Wiener LMS (MS-WLMS) like structure algorithm along with smoothing/prediction filters to improve tracking quality is suggested. This paper presents a customized and fixed-point hardware parallel implementation of the proposed algorithm for WCDMA uplink transmission in third generation (3G) wireless system. Additional speedup in the execution time is achieved over the well known maximum likelihood channel estimation for DS-CDMA. It is also shown that our solution could achieve the real-time requirements of 3GPP standards applied in WCDMA systems.

In the H.264/AVC video codec, multiple reference frames are applied for motion estimation to provide good coding efficiency. However, multiple reference frames also require more memory cost than one reference frame used in a video codec. To minimize the amount of memory requirement, this work proposes to add a decision unit in the H.264/AVC codec to store these reference frames. The said decision unit would look closely at macroblock (MB) of the currently decoded frame to determine it's storage type to be compressed or reconstructed data, according to the encoding parameters of subblocks in this MB. Furthermore, an adaptive scheme is proposed to store the currently decoded frame as reconstructed picture for lowering the computational complexity and using the buffer in full. Experimental results reveal that the proposed memory reduction scheme requires lower complexity and better picture quality than the conventional work. Therefore, the proposed memory reduction scheme can be widely used in various applications of the H.264/AVC codec to minimize the memory requirement.
