This paper describes a system capable of classifying stochastic, self-affine, nonstationary signals produced by nonlinear systems. The classification and analysis of these signals is important because they are generated by many real-world processes. The first stage of the signal classification process entails the transformation of the signal into the multifractal dimension domain, through the computation of the variance fractal dimension trajectory (VFDT). Features can then be extracted from the VFDT using a Kohonen self-organizing feature map. The second stage involves the use of a complex domain neural network and a probabilistic neural network to determine the class of a signal based on these extracted features. The results of this paper show that these techniques can be successful in creating a classification system which can obtain correct classification rates of about 87% when performing classification of such signals with an unknown number of classes.

In InISAR system, the pixels between two ISAR images derived from corresponding antennas usually do not register properly without prior compensation. A three-dimension motion compensation method, or 3D focusing, is put forward in this paper. With the multi-Antenna-pair configuration in radar system, the angular motion p arameters b oth in the a zimuth and p itching a re estimated accurately and the phase unwrapping processing can be avoided in the procedure of obtaining phase unambiguous. Simulation data is used to illustrate the accuracy of the proposed method. The method has also been extended to stripmap SAR for the interferometric 3D imaging of moving and/or man-made objects. © 2003 IEEE.

In this paper, a novel multifractal approach to the classification of unknown self-affine signals is presented as an improvement over traditional traffic signal classifiers. The fundamental advantages of using multifractal measures include normalization and a very high compression ratio of a signature of the traffic, thereby leading to faster implementations, and the ability to add new traffic classes without redesigning the traffic classifier. The variance fractal dimension trajectory is used to provide a multifractal "signature" for each type of traffic over its duration, and the modelling of its statistical histograms provides further compression and generalization. Principal component analysis is used to reduce the dimensionality of the data, and the k-means clustering algorithm is used to determine the number of classes in the multifractal signatures. A probabilistic neural network is then trained with these signatures, and its performance on classifying unknown traffic is used to indicate the most likely number of classes in the data.

This paper describes the architecture and laboratory prototype implementation of the data handling subsystem (DHS) contributed by Team Canada to the Young Engineers' Satellite (YES2) project YES2 is a space-tether initiative of the European space agency uniting thirty universities in Europe, Canada, Asia, and Australia. The purpose of the DHS is to control a 35 km swinging tether for insertion of a low-mass payload into the Earth' s atmosphere from a low-orbiting spacecraft such as the International Space Station. Single event effects, absence of convective cooling, and tether length estimation are the primary design challenges. As a consequence, key software and hardware design features include radiation mitigation, power minimization, thermal mitigation, pulse detection and emphasis on discrete components. The DHS has recently undergone interface testing with teams from Spain, Italy, and Germany at the first YES2 test readiness review at ESTEC with launch scheduled on a Russian carrier for 2005.

Analysis of microelectrode recordings (MER) of extracellular neuronal activity has gained increasing interest due to potential improvements to surgical techniques involving ablation or placement of deep brain stimulators, as is common in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Critical to these procedures is the identification of different brain structures such as the globus pallidus internus (GPI). Evidence suggests that the spike trains from individual neurons contain enough information to identify the brain structure in which they are located. For the work reported here, spike train data gathered during surgical procedure from multiple patients is used. Using a moving window sampling approach, a novel feature extraction method for spike trains was developed. This method is then used in combination with a support vector classification algorithm. Results strongly indicate that the sampling methods reported here are able to extract the necessary information for highly accurate spike source identification.

A new differential input CMOS transconductor circuit for VHF filtering application is introduced. The new circuit has a very high frequency bandwidth, large linear differential mode input range and good common mode signal rejection capability. Using 0.35 /spl mu/m CMOS technology with 3 V power supply, the transconductor has a 0.9 V linear differential input range with a -54.6dB total harmonic distortion (THD) and more than 1 GHz - 3dB bandwidth. A 3rd order elliptic low pass g/sub m/-C filter with a cutoff frequency of 150MHz is demonstrated as an application of the new transconductor.

Time-frequency analysis is one of the methods to deal with non-stationary and time-varying signal such as heart sounds and murmurs. Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD) is a popular tool to obtain time-frequency representation of signal. Windowed Wigner-Ville distribution (WWVD) and smooth windowed Wigner-Ville distribution (SWWVD) are the improvement method to overcome the problem faced by WVD. Determination of parameter setting of WWVD and SWWVD eliminates the cross-terms and improve time-frequency representation. The accuracy of time-frequency representation of simulated heart sounds and murmurs are compared and determined based on the mainlobe width, peak-to-sidelobe average ratio and signal-to-interference ratio. It is found that the most accurate time-frequency representation can be obtained using the SWWVD.

Hyperspectral imagery offers a means of uncovering enormous spectral information that can be used for various applications in data exploitation. How effectively such information is used affects the way image analysis algorithms are designed. In this paper, we take up this issue and focus on algorithms designed and developed for target detection and classification in hyperspectral imagery. In order to effectively characterize the information available before and after the data are processed, the a priori information and a posteriori information are used in accordance with how the information is obtained. A piece of information is referred to as a priori information if it is provided by known knowledge before data are processed. On the other hand, a piece of information is referred to as a posteriori information if it is unknown a priori, but can be obtained directly from the data in an unsupervised fashion during the course of data processing. Since a priori information is known beforehand, it can be further decomposed into two types of information, desired and undesired a priori information. The desired a priori information is the knowledge that will assist, improve and enhance data analysis, whereas the undesired a priori information is the knowledge that hinders, interferes or destructs analysis during data processing. This paper investigates how these three types of information play their roles in design and development of several hyperspectral target detection and classification algorithms. Experiments are also conducted to validate their utility.

This paper considers detection techniques for unresolved Ricean/Rayleigh fading multipath channels. It is well known that the optimal receiver has an estimator-correlator form, with a minimum mean-square error (MMSE) estimate. With known multipath delays and unknown specular phases, the Ricean non-coherent multipath channel is a case where the received noiseless signal process is non-Gaussian, and the MMSE estimator is non-linear in the observation. This work presents novel, explicit expressions for such a MMSE estimator. It is shown that the MMSE estimate has the same multipath format as the noiseless received signal, with the unknown parameters replaced by corresponding estimates. The MMSE estimator scales down contributions from specular multipath components with poor phase estimates, reducing their effect on the detection process. The estimator includes a multipath decorrelation operation which is essential to avoid error floors over unresolved multipath channels. Based on matched filter bounds, it is shown that little degradation gains are obtained by employing suboptimal linear estimator-correlators, provided that they include the decorrelation operation.
