Separation by plasma implantation of oxygen (SPIMOX) is a novel method for fabricating silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers. This method uses plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) where the desired voltage of implant is applied to a wafer immersed in a plasma. SPIMOX is particularly suited for thin separation by implantation of oxygen (SIMOX) wafer fabrication. High implantation rates can be achieved in SPIMOX. A dose of nearly 10/sup 18/ cm/sup -2/ with an implant current density of 1 mA cm/sup -2/ can be achieved in 3 minutes of implantation time. The short implantation time and the simplicity of the implantation equipment makes it a potentially more economical method for fabricating SIMOX wafers. Moreover, the theoretical time for implantation remains constant in SPIMOX with increase in wafer size.

The paper proposes a new multiple window method for estimating a peaked spectrum. The multiple windows are adapted to the signal, giving a less biased estimate for estimation of peaks than does the Thomson multiple window method. Still the result from estimation of a flat spectrum shows comparable results in variance reduction. The method is based on solution of an eigenvalue problem where the eigenvectors of a special correlation matrix are used as multiple windows. The correlation matrix corresponds to a low frequency dominant spectrum with limited bandwidth. The design results in windows that are further improved by a penalty function to reduce leakage from nearby frequencies. This gives a better estimate when the process contains of large spectrum dynamics.

This paper presents a novel real-time artificial neural network called selective attention adaptive resonance theory (SAART). SAART is a self-organising neural model that is based on a real-time neural theory of sensory information processing, high level biological vision, visual perception, object recognition and self-organised learning in complex sensory environments. SAART embeds new neural mechanisms (selective presynaptic facilitation and selective presynaptic inhibition) into a dynamic neural network that is capable of selective attention and visual perception. These new features enable the network to learn effectively in noisy inputs and to recognize familiar 2-D patterns of neural activity (representations of object's boundary) in complex, cluttered and noisy background. SAART also provides fundamental neural design principles and neuro-engineering foundations for the design of robust automatic target recognition and neuro-computational vision systems.

A technique for dynamic real time focusing of ultrasonic transducer arrays is introduced. This paper assumes a linear transducer array operating in the sequential mode. In this case, the elements are fired sequentially, one at a time, all elements receive in parallel. The returns are integrated coherently on the basis of equal geometric phase to synthesize the echoes of an array twice as large. Dynamic focusing is accomplished at any depth through electronic correction of the dominant quadratic phase terms. For this purpose a second order Taylor series expansion of the phase is used.< >

In this paper, we investigate the application of multidimensional IIR digital filters for video signal processing. The problems of sampling structure conversion and deinterlacing are addressed. A multistage filter structure is then proposed to perform the general conversions among different types of sampling structures. Some simple IIR digital filters are proposed and simulated particularly for the above applications. Some simulation results are also given.

Adjustable speed drive systems using AC‐machines are often fed by voltage‐source inverters. This paper presents a new strategy to control the line‐side converter. State‐space and fuzzy methods are combined to achieve a control system which includes control limits and the aspects of safety. Experiments with a drive system (30 kW) demonstrate the dynamic and steady‐state behaviour of the control. Copyright © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The subband adaptive system, where the idea of the filter bank is applied to the adaptive filter, has a feature that a higher-order adaptation can be reduced to lower-order adaptations. The reduction of the order of the adaptive filter is related closely to the number of channels and the decimation ratio. The order of adaptive digital filter (ADF) is decreased greatly when the number of subbands is increased, and the decimation ratio is increased up to the maximum value. Then, however, the number of coefficient-updates per unit time is decreased, which results in the deterioration of the convergence Speed. From such a viewpoint, this paper discusses a method to improve the convergence speed, which is deteriorated in the subband adaptive system, due to the decimation. The idea of the proposed method is to utilize effectively the data which have been discarded in the decimation process and to improve the convergence speed. It is called the multirate repeating method. As the first step, the multirate repeating method is applied to the conventional subband adaptive system and the convergence speed is improved. Then a subband adaptive system is introduced in which the multirate repeating method can be utilized more effectively. As a result, a faster convergence is realized while retaining the ADF order-reduction effect, which is an advantage of the subband adaptive system.

The prototype Pacific Ocean network for the Acoustic Thermometry of Ocean Climate (ATOC) program consists of two shore-cabled acoustic sources, two autonomous vertical hydrophone receiving arrays, and 16 U.S. Navy hydrophone arrays. The sources, receivers, and signaling strategy are designed to be capable of up to 10-megameter transmissions on a routine basis. A new broadband, low-frequency (75 Hz), acoustic source was designed and built by Alliant Techsystems. The bender-bar/barrel-stave transducer is pressure compensated for operation to 1000-m depth. signal waveform shaping is employed to broaden the effective bandwidth of the source to 37.5 Hz (Q=2; time resolution of 27 ms). Four-element vertical hydrophone arrays are attached to the sources to permit reciprocal transmissions and ambient noise monitoring. Autonomous vertical hydrophone arrays consisting of 40 elements at 35-m spacing (1400-m aperture) were developed to resolve low-order acoustic modes. The autonomous arrays are designed for deployments of up to 1 year, with intermediate readout of the data via ship-recoverable pop-up data modules. The U.S. Navy hydrophone arrays were instrumented with 80486-based data acquisition and processing systems, with communications links for transmitting the data in near real time to a central site for further processing and archiving.

The cascaded doublyfed machine consists of two separate induction machines which are interconnected by their rotor windings. This paper presents a general control structure for such machines, based on the principle of the field‐oriented control. An adjustable speed drive operating in subsynchronous mode is compared with an asynchronous machine‐drive system, and its advantages are shown. State‐space control methods are used to get a stable behaviour over a wide speed range. Copyright © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

This paper deals with the design of a broad class of 2-D recursive digital filters including general fan, diamond and elliptically-symmetric filters. At first, the explicit design of quadrant and +/- 45-degrees fan filters is reviewed. A full-plane diamond filter (both axes are nearly of length 2 pi) can easily be obtained through an appropriate transformation of a +/- 45-degrees fan filter. Using this diamond filter as a prototype, a very simple spectral transformation is then proposed to design full-plane circularly-symmetric filters (radius almost-equal-to pi). These filters share the same lattice wave digital structure and employ only first or second order all-pass sections which can be realized by two-port adaptors. They provide very desirable properties such as low sensitivity, high dynamic range and good stability even under finite arithmetic conditions. Using the above mentioned filters as prototypes, a multirate approach is then introduced to deal with the design of fan filters with arbitrary angle and orientation, diamond and elliptically-symmetric filters with arbitrary length of axes. Finally, some design examples are given.
