A reduced-state sequence estimator for linear dispersive channels is described. The technique is based on partitioning the set of all possible channel states in a way that defines a trellis with fewer states resulting in reduced complexity. The outcome of the new technique results is a generalization of trellises previously obtained in Duel-Hallen and Heegard. While the approach in Duel-Hallen and Heegard results in power of two-state trellises, the new technique generates trellises with an arbitrary number of states. Therefore, the set partitioning approach described in the present paper provides a better performance/complexity tradeoff. The Viterbi algorithm (VA) is used to search for the best path through the reduced state trellis.

An approach for the design of limit-cycle-free digital fixed-point filters is proposed. By constraining the transfer function already in the design phase, it is guaranteed that the filter will be free from limit cycles and overflow oscillations in the direct form implementation. The design strategy also guarantees low roundoff noise. The proposed approach is illustrated with design examples. The examples show that typically a 50-100% increase in the filter order (as compared to standard elliptic design) is needed for the limit-cycle-free implementation of a lowpass filter with the direct form (DF) structure. Since the DF structure is very efficient to implement in signal processors, the proposed filters are very attractive for such environment, whereas dedicated filter structures (wave digital, state-space, etc.) easily result in a 3 to 4-fold implementation complexity.< >

New stack filter architectures are proposed. Known architectures are considered from new positions and combined to obtain new structures with suitable complexities and throughputs. It is shown that all stack filters can be used without changes when the input data is represented in one of the binary lexicographic codes. Stack filters are also proposed for the cases where the data are represented in multiple-value lexicographic codes. The class of pipeline-parallel structures for common stack filters is simple and modular in structure, and suitable for VLSI implementation. This paper applies the Bayesian conditional decision feedback estimator (BCDFE) to rapidly fading frequency selective channels. The BCDFE is a model-based deconvolution algorithm which jointly estimates the transmitted data and channel parameters. The BCDFE applies joint symbol-by-symbol MAP demodulation and channel estimation to equalize channels, and consequently provides robust performance in rapidly fading channels. We provide a brief derivation of the BCDFE and characterize the performance on the land mobile radio channel. We assess the BCDFE's principle design characteristics and the resulting performance in both transient and steady-state operation. The effects of delay spread, Doppler spread, and co-channel interference on the BEP performance are also presented. The BCDFE demonstrates many of the desirable characteristics of an equalizer for mobile radio.< >

The eigenvector method for estimating the positions of the receivers of an ocean-towed array is based on the eigendecomposition of the array signal correlation matrix to find the phase delays between the array receivers. This paper derives the mean, variance and covariance of the phase delays when the correlation matrix is estimated from receiver data. It is shown that the variance of the relative phase delays is inversely proportional to the number of snapshots and SNR but relatively independent of the size of the correlation matrix. The theoretical derivations are supported by numerical simulations.< >

The performance of non-hierarchical circuit switched networks at moderate load conditions is improved when alternate routes are made available. However, alternate routes introduce instability under heavy and overloaded conditions, and under these load conditions network performance is found to deteriorate. To alleviate this problem, a control mechanism that reserves a traction of the capacity of each link for direct routed calls is used. In this paper, a traffic management scheme is developed to enhance the performance of a mesh-connected, circuit-switched satellite communication network. The network load is measured and the network is continually adapted by reconfiguring the map to suit the current traffic conditions. The reconfiguration of the network is done by properly allocating the capacity of each link and placing an optimal reservation on each link. The optimization is done by using a neural network-based optimization technique called mean field annealing. The simulation results show that this method of traffic management performs better than pure dynamic routing with a fixed configuration.< >
