The authors outline an edge-prediction-adjustment strategy for the detection of diffused edges using an image pyramid structure. An initial edge map is obtained from an appropriate high-level image of the pyramid using a conventional edge detection method. Next, using a simple linear interpolation, the predicted edge map for the adjacent low-level image is determined. Based on the information of the predicted edges, edge adjustment is carried out using a sequential search in a small neighborhood of each of the predicted edges with the aid of a dynamic programming based method. Simulation results on both synthetic and medical images indicate that the performance of the proposed approach is much better than that of the commonly used differential of a Gaussian-based approach.< >
A least-squares model-based approach to digital halftoning is proposed. It exploits both a printer model and a model for visual perception. It obtains an "optimal" halftoned reproduction, by minimizing the s...

A scheme based on a combination of linear and nonlinear filters ensuring high detail-preservation, with no blurring and without giving rise to aliasing artifacts, is described. Nonlinear detail-preserving filters are combined with linear filters using a special frequency detector to switch the operation to a particular filter depending on the local signal content. In signal areas with rapidly varying high-frequency content, the linear filter is switched on to avoid aliasing distortions. In fast-changing signal areas, the nonlinear filter is switched on to avoid blurring edges. The high frequency signal components which may give rise to aliasing errors are effectively removed while edges and details remain intact. Results of tests on real and simulated images indicate that the new scheme unifies the best features of linear and nonlinear filters.< >
