This paper proposes a novel two-step distributed detection scheme for cooperative spectrum-sensing networks. In the first step, individual contributions from nodes within a neighborhood are fused through an adaptive combiner, which updates the weights and makes local decisions iteratively. In the second step, local decisions are shared within a neighborhood to yield a consensus decision. Results are presented in terms of complementary receiver operating characteristic curves and show the good behavior of the proposed scheme when compared to the optimal linear fusion rule, even if correlated node contributions are considered.

Deviations from whiteness in the innovations of a Kalman filter indicate that the filter is not optimal for the given data. Lack of optimality can come from changes in the system properties but also from discrepancies between the noise statistics used to formulate the filter and the actual values. This paper examines the importance that changes in the noise part of the filter have on its ability to function as a damage detector. Analysis and numerical results show that the sensitivity is such that a realistic assessment of performance demands that potential fluctuations in the noise statistics be accounted for. ©2010 Society for Experimental Mechanics Inc.

The aim of this work was to separate ECG artifacts from surface electromyogram (EMG) signals collected from erector spinae muscles with the blind source separation technique based on independent component analysis (ICA) and to investigate the separation at different interference levels. Using three EMG signals collected above erector spinal muscles from 5 subjects, the proposed method succeeds in separating the sources in both real and simulated signals. However, the ICA is not able to separate the signals when the signal-to-interference ratio is greater than 20 dB. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

A region-based P300 speller for brain-computer interface

A brain-computer interface (BCI) is a system that conveys messages and commands directly from the human brain to a computer. The BCI system described in this work is based on the P300 wave. The P300 is a positive peak of an event-related potential (ERP) that occurs 300 ms after a stimulus. One of the best-known and most widely used P300 applications is the P300 speller designed by Farwell-Donchin in 1988. The Farwell-Donchin paradigm has been a benchmark for P300 BCIs. In this paradigm, a 6 X 6 matrix of letters and numbers is displayed, and the subject focuses on a target character while rows and columns of characters flash. Through detection of P300 for one row and one column, the target character can be identified. In this paper, it is shown that there is a human perceptual error in the Farwell-Donchin paradigm. To eliminate this error, a new region-based paradigm is presented. Using experimental results, it is shown that the new paradigm has several advantages over the Farwell-Donchin paradigm and achieves better accuracy. © 2005 IEEE.

Background: Gene copy number and gene expression values play important roles in cancer initiation and progression. Both can be measured with high-throughput microarrays and some methodologies to integrate and analyze these data exist. However, varying gene sets within different gene expression and copy number microarrays present significant challenges. Results: We report an advanced version of earlier published CGH-Plotter that rapidly can identify amplified and deleted areas using gene copy number data. With CGH-Plotter v2, the copy number values can be filtered based on the genomic location in basepair units. After filtering, the values for the missing genes can be interpolated. Moreover, the effect of noninformative areas in the genome can be systematically removed by smoothing and interpolating. Further, we developed a tool (ECN) to illustrate the CGH-data values annotated based on the gene expression. The ECN-tool is a MATLAB toolbox enabling straightforward illustration of copy numbers annotated based on the gene expression levels. Conclusion: CGH-Plotter v2 provides two methods for analyzing copy number data;dynamic programming and genomic location based smoothing. With ECN-tool the data analyzed with CGH-Plotter v2 can easily be illustrated along the chromosomes individually or along the whole genome. ECN-tool plots the copy number data annotated based on the gene expression data, and it is easy to find the genes that are both over-expressed and amplified or under-expressed and deleted in the samples. This paper proposes selective update and cooperation strategies for parameter estimation in distributed adaptive sensor networks. A set-membership filtering approach is employed that results in reduced complexity for updating parameter estimates at each network node, a significant reduction in information exchange between cooperating nodes, and an optimal strategy to obtain consensus estimates. The proposed strategies and the estimation algorithm offer a new way to explore cooperation in adaptive distributed sensor networks.

In this work, an array of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensors is fabricated on a single quartz crystal substrate and attached with poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) micro chamber for using in flow-injection system. The Cr/Au electrode array is deposited on both side of quartz substrate by sputtering through electroplated microshadow mask. PDMS micro chamber was fabricated by mold casting technique with SU-8 mold. Fabricated PDMS micro chamber and QCM sensor array were attached together for using in flow-injection system. In our experiment, the QCM electrodes were coated with the carboxylic poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-COOH) and then the carboxylic group was activated with carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) and N-hydroxylsuccinimide (NHS) for protein binding. The scanning electron micrograph shown the trapped protein on the modified sensing layer, it confirmed that our QCM sensor and PDMS micro chamber can be used as QCM biosensor array. This new QCM sensor array provide possibility of multiple detection in small amount of sample within a single quartz crystal substrate that avoid the error signal from the different properties of each sensor in an array.

Histological studies of nerve cells are used by researchers to explore many nerve pathologies and treatments. Manual analysis and interpretation of hundreds of nerve fibers typically seen on one image is not possible and therefore, we propose a semi-automated tool based on ridge detection to allow users to segment histological images as they desire. An automatic segmentation is used to first segment the image. Ridges of the cells were enhanced using the first eigenvalue of the hessian matrix. A hysteresis based ridge segmentation is then used to separate the cells from the background. The completed automatic segmentation is presented to the user. It can be further enhanced to meet the individual needs of the user. The user has the ability to (1) remove any cells in the histological image that are not desired cells or (2) add any cells not initially detected. Once the user-defined segmentation is completed, the final segmented image is used to analyze the properties of each individual cell. The size of each cell as well as a measure of wall thickness is calculated and saved for the user. In images of good contrast, where nerve cells are large and well spaced, the automatic cell detection rates are between 90 - 95%. In images with poor contrast with small nerve cells tightly packed together, the cell detection rate is 50-75%. © 2008 IEEE.
