In design of guidance algorithm's wind is often ignored or only considered implicitly. Persistent winds has a very significant nonlinear effect on the guidance scheme as for small UAVs these disturbances can strongly affect their spatial orientation. This research work extends the idea of sliding mode control for parameter estimation of UAV nonlinear dynamics. The uncertain parameter estimation scheme is designed to estimate wind based on the higher order sliding mode robust differentiator (HOSMD) using rate of change of heading of the vehicle. Further these estimates are then included in the guidance algorithm. The UAVs guidance algorithm's objective is to derive the lateral track error towards zero with graceful and stable manoeuvres and then to keep it as minimum as possible while subject to disturbing winds. In this scheme a second order sliding motion is established along designed sliding manifold and outputs the reference bank commands for improved tracking performance using estimates during curved arcs. The estimation is combined seamlessly with robust guidance algorithm to produce integrated identification and guidance scheme for lateral path following application. The combined framework is capable of robust accurate path following in the presence of wind disturbance. The algorithm is implemented in the flight control simulation of scaled YAK-54 research UAV; simulation test results are presented. These results demonstrate the effectiveness and performance of the proposed lateral guidance scheme.

Research unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) provide a cost effective solution for rapid development and testing of new algorithms in real system flight testing. The sliding mode control architecture is applied by the authors to the lateral dynamics of scaled YAK-54 UAV. Flight dynamic analysis and control system design is complicated by the problem of uncertain measurements, external disturbances and modeling uncertainties. Using the powerful tools of sliding mode theory we present an innovative robust lateral control algorithm. For robust stabilization of lateral dynamics, 1 st -order sliding mode control was designed. Due to its limitation of chattering in the control channel and extra information demand, a 2 nd -order super twisting algorithm was designed to provide chattering free improved robust control. The designed framework's effectiveness is tested by applying the developed scheme on scaled YAK-54 UAV. The results of the flight tests are included in the paper to demonstrate the benefits of the adopted framework for the control design and further it focuses on bridging the gap between theory and experimental practice.

Vehicle navigation systems rely on the correct positioning information and GPS is the best solution. However, in situations of GPS outage, like in tunnels and dense woods, the vehicle can lose track quickly. Modern vehicle navigation systems are mostly based on the vehicle dynamics;proprietary algorithms keep navigating for quite some time. But these solutions are expensive and add much to a vehicle's cost. This paper proposes a Kalman filter based dead-reckoning algorithm that fuses GPS information with the orientation information from a cheap IMU/INS, and the vehicle's speed accessed from its ECU. This low-cost system uses GPS and IMU/INS in a loosely coupled manner along with vehicle's speed and keeps supplying a quite accurate position information with GPS outage for significantly long intervals. With proper tuning and initialization, the proposed scheme has a potential to keep working in a completely GPS-denied situation.

This work focuses in the estimation of the specific production rate of intracellular products in fed-batch processes, for the case where high cell densities are present. Particularly, a new volume model is proposed for the high cell density case where a large amount of intracellular product is stored. Based on the model ant the on-line volume measurement, a high order sliding mode observer is proposed to estimate the specific production rate. The observer achieves finite time convergence and robustness against model disturbances and model uncertainty, while it does not require for a kinetic model of the production rate. The proposed algorithm is evaluated whith numerical simulations and experimentally.

Recently, methods for control Configuration Selection (CCS) using weighted graphs have been introduced. These methods were integrated in a software tool which allows systematic CCS in industry processes by choosing a simplified model with a reduced structure on which control will be based. This paper addresses the extension of these graph-based methods to be applied to integrating systems, which often appear in industry processes, e.g. at storage vessels. The extension is based on restricting the analysis to a set of frequencies of interest which omits the infinite DC-gain. The results are validated and illustrated using a real-life case, namely the secondary heating system of a pulp & paper mill.

The well-known cooperative localization algorithm, `sum-product algorithm over a wireless network' (SPAWN) has two major shortcomings, a relatively high computational complexity and a large communication load. Using the Gaussian mixture model with a model selection criterion and the sigma-point (SP) methods, we propose the SPAWN-SP to overcome these problems. The SPAWN-SP easily accommodates different localization scenarios due to its high flexibility in message representation. Furthermore, harsh LOS/NLOS environments are considered for the evaluation of cooperative localization algorithms. Our simulation results indicate that the proposed SPAWN-SP demonstrates high localization accuracy in different localization scenarios, thanks to its high flexibility in message representation.

We study maximum likelihood (ML) position estimation using quantized received signal strength measurements. In order to mitigate the undesired quantization effect in the observations, the dithering technique is adopted. Various dither noise distributions are considered and the corresponding likelihood functions are derived. Simulation results show that the proposed ML estimator with dithering is able to generate a significantly reduced bias but a modestly increased mean-square-error as compared to the conventional ML estimator without dithering.

Quantum-based transmission is an attractive solution conceived for achieving absolute security. In this quest, we have conceived an EXtrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) chart aided channel code design for symbol-based entanglement-assisted classical communication over quantum depolarizing channels. Our proposed concatenated code design incorporates a Convolutional Code (CC), a symbol-based Unity Rate Code (URC) and a soft-decision aided 2-qubit Superdense Code (2SD), which is hence referred to as a CC-URC-2SD arrangement. We have optimized our design with the aid of non-binary EXIT charts. Our proposed design operates within 1 dB of the achievable capacity, providing attractive performance gains over its bit-based counterpart. Quantitatively, the bit-based scheme requires 60% more iterations than our symbol-based scheme for the sake of achieving perfect decoding convergence. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the decoding complexity can be reduced by using memory-2 and memory-3 convolutional codes, while still outperforming the bit-based approach.
