We consider received-signal-strength-based robust geolocation in mixed line-of-sight/non-line-of-sight propagation environments. Herein, we assume a mode-dependent propagation model with unknown parameters. We propose to jointly estimate the geographical coordinates and propagation model parameters. In order to approximate the maximum-likelihood estimator (MLE), we develop an iterative algorithm based on the well-known expectation and maximization criterion. As compared to the standard ML implementation, the proposed algorithm is simpler to implement and capable of reproducing the MLE. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm attains the best geolocation accuracy as the number of measurements increases.

We study received signal strength-based cooperative localization in wireless sensor networks. We assume that the measurement noise fits a contaminated Gaussian model so as to take into account some outlier conditions. In addition, some environment-dependent parameters are assumed to be unknown. We propose an expectation-maximization based algorithm for robust centralized network localization without offline training. As benchmark for comparison, we express the best achievable localization accuracy in terms of the Cramér-Rao bound. Experimental results demonstrate the advantages of the proposed algorithm as compared to some representative algorithms.

We investigate robust cooperative localization in LOS/NLOS environments in wireless sensor networks. Round-trip time-of-arrival signal metric is considered so that time synchronization among sensors can be avoided. Owing to the non-line-of-sight effect, we model the measurement error by a two-mode Gaussian mixture distribution. However, its parameters are assumed completely unknown. We propose a centralized localization algorithm, which jointly estimates the unknown geographical coordinates and the nuisance mixture model parameters. The expectation-maximization criterion is adopted here to implement the maximum likelihood estimator. In addition, we also compute the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for our estimation problem and present the best achievable positioning accuracy in terms of the CRLB.

A weighted summation of Integral of Time Multiplied Absolute Error (ITAE) and Integral of Squared controller Output (ISCO) minimization based time domain optimal tuning of fractional-order (FO) PID or PI λ D μ controller is proposed in this paper with a Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) based technique that minimizes the change in trajectories of the state variables and the control signal. A class of fractional order systems having single non-integer order element which show highly sluggish and oscillatory open loop responses have been tuned with an LQR based FOPID controller. The proposed controller design methodology is compared with the existing time domain optimal tuning techniques with respect to change in the trajectory of state variables, tracking performance for change in set-point, magnitude of control signal and also the capability of load disturbance suppression. A real coded genetic algorithm (GA) has been used for the optimal choice of weighting matrices while designing the quadratic regulator by minimizing the time domain integral performance index. Credible simulation studies have been presented to justify the proposition.

A low-complexity cooperative wireless and optical-fiber communication scheme is proposed for uplink communication in a Fractional Frequency Reuse (FFR) based multicell, multiuser system. The FFR principle is invoked for improving the cell-edge performance without reducing the throughput of the cell-center. Each cell is illuminated with the aid of six Remote Antennas (RAs), which are connected to the central base-station with the aid of realistically modelled imperfect optical-fiber links. When a Mobile Station (MS) is located at the cell-edge, the two nearest RAs can be invoked to detect and forward the user's signal to the base-station, based on the Single-Input Multiple-Output (SIMO) principle. Furthermore, we design a Turbo Coded (TC) 16-level Star-Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (StQAM) scheme for supporting optical-fiber-aided cooperative wireless transmission, where the receiver does not have to estimate the channel state information. Hence, a lower detection complexity can be achieved when compared to coherently detected schemes, albeit naturally, at a 3 dB power-loss. We also investigated the effect of phase-rotation imposed by imperfect optical-fiber links. We found that our noncoherent TC-StQAM scheme is robust to both wireless and optical-fiber imperfections.

In this paper a depth and pitch controller for a hover-capable AUV is designed and implemented in simulation. The effect on controller performance of random Gaussian noise on the feedback signals is evaluated. It has been shown that very small levels of measurement noise will result in the controller performance degrading substantially and behaving in an erratic fashion. A polynomial type filter has been proposed and integrated into the model predictive control algorithm. This modification reduces the effect of the measurement noise substantially and improves controller performance.

The performance of field oriented vector controlled ac motor drives is essentially influenced by the dynamics of the controller loops. Typically in industrial servo drives, standard PI-controllers are used in a cascaded structure. The innermost loop is the current controller loop, whose actual value is given by measurement. This controller is usually adjusted automatically by the knowledge of the electrical motor parameters. The overlying controller loops like speed and position controller require information of the position respectively the derivation of the position. Typically a shaft encoder provides this information but more often a position observer is used instead of. This work presents a method for self-commissioning of speed and position controller for drives without a shaft encoder based on a frequency response measurement of the overall system (mechanics + observer). Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the performance and feasibility of the proposed method.

In locust local circuits that control limb movements, the neural signals are processed by both spiking and nonspiking interneurons that operate in parallel to process sensory information. These interneurons receive sensory inputs from leg mechanoreceptors and together project to leg motor neuron pools. The main feature of the nonspiking interneurons is their ability to communicate with other neurons without the intervention of nerve impulses, or spikes, so that they exert graded control over their postsynaptic motor neurons, while spiking local interneurons communicate by means of action potentials and are involved in the integration of sensory signals. Our work presents an investigation from different classes of neurons driven by random Gaussian excitatory movements to a proprioceptor at the knee joint. The underlying aim of this work was to use information theory in understanding connectivity in the neural network.

A distributed control law for quadrilateral (four-agent) formation control with bearing-only measurements and relative pair-wise inter-agent angle constraints is introduced. The control law is weak in the sense that each agent is free to choose their own heading within a relatively large region of values. Indeed, the agents can determine their heading independently at run-time given any criteria they desire as long as certain relaxed conditions are met. A strong convergence result is established with ensures the desired formation configuration is globally asymptotically stable. Illustrative examples are provided to demonstrate the claims. © 2011 IEEE.
