This paper presents an inception-based deep neural network for detecting lung diseases using respiratory sound input. Recordings of respiratory sound collected from patients are firstly transformed into spectrograms where both spectral and temporal information are well presented, referred to as front-end feature extraction. These spectrograms are then fed into the proposed network, referred to as back-end classification, for detecting whether patients suffer from lung-relevant diseases. Our experiments, conducted over the ICBHI benchmark meta-dataset of respiratory sound, achieve competitive ICBHI scores of 0.53/0.45 and 0.87/0.85 regarding respiratory anomaly and disease detection, respectively. —Target speech separation refers to extracting a target speaker’s voice from an overlapped audio of simultaneous talkers. Previously the use of visual modality for target speech separation has demonstrated great potentials. This work proposes a general multi-modal framework for target speech separation by utilizing all the available information of the target speaker, including his/her spatial location, voice characteristics and lip movements. Also, under this framework, we investigate on the fusion methods for multi-modal joint modeling. A factorized attention-based fusion method is proposed to aggregate the high-level semantic information of multi-modalities at embedding level. This method firstly factorizes the mixture audio into a set of acoustic subspaces, then leverages the target’s information from other modalities to enhance these subspace acoustic embeddings with a learnable attention scheme. To validate the robustness of proposed multi-modal separation model in practical scenarios, the system was evaluated under the condition that one of the modalities is temporarily missing, invalid or corrupted. Experiments are conducted on a large-scale audio-visual dataset collected from YouTube (to be released) that spatialized by simulated room impulse responses (RIRs). Experiment results illustrate that our proposed multi-modal framework significantly outperforms single-modal and bi-modal speech separation approaches, while can still support real-time processing. 1 Copyright © 2020, The Authors. Terrestrial networks form the fundamental infrastructure of modern communication systems, serving more than 4 billion users globally. However, terrestrial networks are facing a wide range of challenges, from coverage and reliability to interference and congestion. As the demands of the 6G era are expected to be much higher, it is crucial to address these challenges to ensure a robust and efficient communication infrastructure for the future. To address these problems, Non-terrestrial Network (NTN) has emerged to be a promising solution. NTNs are communication networks that leverage airborne (e.g., unmanned aerial vehicles) and spaceborne vehicles (e.g., satellites) to facilitate ultra-reliable communications and connectivity with high data rates and low latency over expansive regions. This article aims to provide a comprehensive survey on the utilization of network slicing, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML), and Open Radio Access Network (ORAN) to address diverse challenges of NTNs from the perspectives of both academia and industry. Particularly, we first provide an in-depth tutorial on NTN and the key enabling technologies including network slicing, AI/ML, and ORAN. Then, we provide a comprehensive survey on how network slicing and AI/ML have been leveraged to overcome the challenges that NTNs are facing. Moreover, we present how ORAN can be utilized for NTNs. Finally, we highlight important challenges, open issues, and future research directions of NTN in the 6G era. © 2024, CC BY.

n this paper, we take a new approach for time of arrival geo-localization. We show that the main sources of error in metropolitan areas are due to environmental imperfections that bias our solutions, and that we can rely on a probabilistic model to learn and compensate for them. The resulting localization error is validated using measurements from a live LTE cellular network to be less than 10 meters, representing an order-of-magnitude improvement. WordNet lexical-database groups English words into sets of synonyms called "synsets." Synsets are utilized for several applications in the field of text-mining. However, they were also open to criticism because although, in reality, not all the members of a synset represent the meaning of that synset with the same degree, in practice, they are considered as members of the synset, identically. Thus, the fuzzy version of synsets, called fuzzy-synsets (or fuzzy word-sense classes) were proposed and studied. In this study, we discuss why (type-1) fuzzy synsets (T1 F-synsets) do not properly model the membership uncertainty, and propose an upgraded version of fuzzy synsets in which membership degrees of word-senses are represented by intervals, similar to what in Interval Type 2 Fuzzy Sets (IT2 FS) and discuss that IT2 FS theoretical framework is insufficient for analysis and design of such synsets, and propose a new concept, called Interval Probabilistic Fuzzy (IPF) sets. Then we present an algorithm for constructing the IPF synsets in any language, given a corpus and a word-sense-disambiguation system. Utilizing our algorithm and the open-American-online-corpus (OANC) and UKB word-sense-disambiguation, we constructed and published the IPF synsets of WordNet for English language. Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) has developed into a prominent tool for adaptive, scale-based signal analysis in various fields like robotics, security and biomedical engineering. Since the dramatic increase in amount of data puts forward higher requirements for the capability of real-time signal analysis, it is difficult for existing EMD and its variants to trade off the growth of data dimension and the speed of signal analysis. In order to decompose multi-dimensional signals at a faster speed, we present a novel signal-serialization method (serial-EMD), which concatenates multi-variate or multi-dimensional signals into a one-dimensional signal and uses various one-dimensional EMD algorithms to decompose it. To verify the effects of the proposed method, synthetic multi-variate time series, artificial 2D images with various textures and real-world facial images are tested. Compared with existing multi-EMD algorithms, the decomposition time becomes significantly reduced. In addition, the results of facial recognition with Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs) extracted using our method can achieve a higher accuracy than those obtained by existing multi-EMD algorithms, which demonstrates the superior performance of our method in terms of the quality of IMFs. Furthermore, this method can provide a new perspective to optimize the existing EMD algorithms, that is, transforming the structure of the input signal rather than being constrained by developing envelope computation techniques or signal decomposition methods. In summary, the study suggests that the serial-EMD technique is a highly competitive and fast alternative for multi-dimensional signal analysis. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

We present Optimization Engine (OpEn): an open-source code generation framework for real-time embedded nonconvex optimization, which implements a novel numerical method. OpEn combines the proximal averaged Newton-type method for optimal control (PANOC) with the penalty and augmented Lagrangian methods to compute approximate stationary points of nonconvex problems. The proposed method involves very simple algebraic operations such as vector products, has a low memory footprint and exhibits very good convergence properties that allow the solution of nonconvex problems on embedded devices. OpEn’s core solver is written is Rust — a modern, high-performance, memory-safe and thread-safe systems programming language — while users can call it from Python, MATLAB, C, C++, ROS or over a TCP socket.

Learning compact target-oriented feature representations for visual tracking

Many state-of-the-art trackers usually resort to the pre-trained convolutional neural network (CNN) model for correlation filtering, in which deep features could usually be redundant, noisy and less discriminative for some certain instances, and the tracking performance might thus be affected. To handle this problem, we propose a novel approach, which takes both advantages of good generalization of generative models and excellent discrimination of discriminative models, for visual tracking. In particular, we learn compact, discriminative and target-oriented feature representations using the Laplacian coding algorithm that exploits the dependence among the input local features in a discriminative correlation filter framework. The feature representations and the correlation filter are jointly learnt to enhance to each other via a fast solver which only has very slight computational burden on the tracking speed. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets demonstrate that this proposed framework clearly outperforms baseline trackers with a modest impact on the frame rate, and performs comparably against the state-of-the-art methods.
