We propose a sequential Monte Carlo algorithm for parameter learning when the studied model exhibits random discontinuous jumps in behaviour. To facilitate the learning of high dimensional parameter sets, such as those associated to neural networks, we adopt the emerging framework of differentiable particle filtering, wherein parameters are trained by gradient descent. We design a new differentiable interacting multiple model particle filter to be capable of learning the individual behavioural regimes and the model which controls the jumping simultaneously. In contrast to previous approaches, our algorithm allows control of the computational effort assigned per regime whilst using the probability of being in a given regime to guide sampling. Furthermore, we develop a new gradient estimator that has a lower variance than established approaches and remains fast to compute, for which we prove consistency. We establish new theoretical results of the presented algorithms and demonstrate superior numerical performance compared to the previous state-of-the-art *** Codes 62M20, 62F12 © 2024, CC BY.

Software-defined radar has been an active research field for more than ten years. However, the low performance and low scalability of the traditional processing techniques of SDR make it hard to deal with complex radar tasks. The stream processing engine is a software that supports low latency and high scalability distributed data processing. It is widely used in log, image, and video processing scenarios but rarely used in radar applications. This paper reviews processing software-defined radar data by using the stream processing engine, and we illustrate the differences between processing log data and radar data. Furthermore, we discuss some optimizations for stream processing engines to get better performance in the radar data processing. © 2021 IEEE.

Automatic modulation recognition for frequency-hopping (FH) signals remains very challenging to researchers due to the signals' time-varying spectral characteristics. In this work, a novel robust automatic modulation recognition scheme is investigated for FH signals using the phase-space topological features represented by the embedded phase diagrams. As such embedded phase diagrams are often high-dimensional, it is necessary to formulate the phase-space features as tensors. In the training process, the phase-space tensor features will be utilized to establish the regression models as linear encoders for the individual modulations. The aforementioned linear encoders are constructed using the support vector machine (SVM);the phase-space feature-tensors of the training signals of all modulations will be projected by their corresponding regression models (or linearly encoded) to produce the representative code-vectors, respectively. In the test stage, the phase-space feature-tensor produced from a test signal will be projected by each individual trained regression model (or linearly encoded) to generate the respective code-vectors. Then, the code-vectors resulting from the test stage will be compared with the representative code-vectors to find which modulation will lead to the smallest Euclidean distance in between and such a modulation will be picked as the modulation type of the test signal. Monte Carlo simulation results have demonstrated that the average recognition accuracy of our proposed new approach is more than 90% when the signal-to-noise ratio is no less than 0 dB for additive white Gaussian noise. © 2023 IEEE.

Nowadays, multimedia data are often produced by various sources, e.g., Internet of Things (IoT), social media, customer databases, etc. As tremendous multimedia data are produced every day, users or E-commerce customers cannot infer information from such data by themselves and therefore recommender systems have been developed to help users to select the products or services which better fit users' preferences or requirements. Nonetheless, there exists few works on the incorporation of side information or multiple attributes about items into the design of a more robust recommender system. In this work, we propose a novel approach based on the third-order tensor singular-value-decomposition (T3-SVD) to design new personalized multimedia recommender systems (PMRSs) for internet users. A PMRS can dynamically adjust its recommendation strategy subject to a particular user's on-line transaction behavior. To evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed PMRS based on T3-SVD, we compare the performances of our proposed new PMRS and two other existing tensor-based recommendation systems over realworld data in terms of normalized root-mean-square error (NRMSE). As a result, our proposed new PMRS greatly outperforms the other two existing systems. © 2023 IEEE.

Accurate semantic segmentation for surgical instruments is crucial in robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery, mainly regarded as a core module in surgical-instrument tracking and operation guidance. Nevertheless, it is usually difficult for existing semantic surgical-instrument segmentation approaches to adapt to unknown surgical scenes, particularly due to their insufficient consideration for reducing the domain gaps across different scenes. To address this issue, we propose an unsupervised domain-adaptive semantic segmentation approach for surgical instruments, leveraging Dropout-enhanced Dual Heads and Coarse-Grained classification branch (D2HCG). The proposed approach comprises dropout-enhanced dual heads for diverse feature representation, and a coarse-grained classification branch for capturing complexities across varying granularities. This incorporates consistency loss functions targeting fine-grained features and coarse-grained granularities, aiming to reduce crossscene domain gaps. Afterwards, we perform experiments in crossscene surgical-instrument semantic segmentation cases, with the experimental results reporting the effectiveness for the proposed approach, compared with state-of-the-art semantic segmentation ones. © 2018 IEEE.

Deepfake techniques has made face swapping in video easy to use. Nowadays, the spread of Deepfake videos over networks is concerned worldwide. This work proposes an approach to more accurate and robust detection of them. Since artifacts left by Deepfake tools can be largely categorized into two classes of different levels, i.e. semantic and noise level, we adopt a two-stream convolutional neural network (CNN) to capture the 2-level features concurrently. Xception network is trained only as the first stream to detect semantic anomalies such as the editing artifacts around face contour, detail missing, and geometric inconsistence in eyes. Meanwhile, the 2nd stream, which contain the constrained convolution filter and median filter, is designed to capture the tampering traces in local noises. By concatenating the 2-level features learned from the both streams, our method obtains very comprehensive knowledge about the existence of face swapping. The experimental results have shown its advantage over the existing methods on both the accuracy and robustness. © 2020 ACM.

The large number and scale of natural and man-made disasters have led to an urgent demand for technologies that enhance the safety and efficiency of search and rescue teams. Semi-autonomous rescue robots are beneficial, especially when searching inaccessible terrains, or dangerous environments, such as collapsed infrastructures. For search and rescue missions in degraded visual conditions or non-line of sight scenarios, radar-based approaches may contribute to acquire valuable, and otherwise unavailable information. This article presents a complete signal processing chain for radar-based multi-person detection, 2D-MUSIC localization and breathing frequency estimation. The proposed method shows promising results on a challenging emergency response dataset that we collected using a semi-autonomous robot equipped with a commercially available through-wall radar system. The dataset is composed of 62 scenarios of various difficulty levels with up to five persons captured in different postures, angles and ranges including wooden and stone obstacles that block the radar line of sight. Ground truth data for reference locations, respiration, electrocardiogram, and acceleration signals are included. Hyperspectral images have wide application in different commercial and military missions. However, these images suffer from the low spatial resolution, and hence, spectral unmixing has been proposed as a suitable technique to solve this deficiency. Recently, some preprocessing modules have been proposed which use the combination of spatial and spectral information of image pixels with the purpose of improving endmember extraction and spectral unmixing in hyperspectral images. In this paper, we propose a statistical preprocessing algorithm using weighted extended cumulative entropy (WECE) as the Edge Detection algorithm to identify spectrally pure pixels and KL distance estimation using the mean and covariance values of pure oversegments and their neighbors to find the spatially homogenous and spectrally pure pixels for the next endmember extraction algorithms. Moreover, the average of KL distances are applied due to the reduction of noise power and local spectral variability. The performance of the novel statistical preprocessing algorithm has been compared with the sate-of-the-art in terms of RMSE reconstruction and average SAD errors on two real hyperspectral images known as HYDICE urban and AVIRIS Indian Pines in combination with several endmember extraction (EE) algorithms and its efficiency is evaluated. © 2021 IEEE.

Nonlinear dynamic systems are often approximated by a Volterra series, which is a generalization of the Taylor series for systems with memory. However, the Volterra series lacks physical interpretation. To take advantage of the Volterra representation while aiming for an interpretable block-oriented model, we establish a link between the Volterra representation and the parallel Wiener-Hammerstein model, based on decoupling of multivariate polynomials. The true link is through a constrained decoupling model with (block-)Toeplitz structure on the factors and sets of identical internal branches. The solution of the modified decoupling problem then reveals directly the parameters of the parallel Wiener-Hammerstein model of the system. However, due to the uniqueness properies of the plain decoupling algorithm, even if the structure is not imposed, the method still leads to the true solution (in the exact case).

In this big data era, distributed machine learning and global data pooling have become quite critical in practical implementation of any multimedia data-science technique. The emerging federated multimedia recommendation systems (FeMRSs) offer a promising approach to address the need of personalized recommendations subject to both users’ privacy and data security. However, there exists no quantitative method for assessing the discrepancy between the large original rating matrix stored on the server and the dimensionality-reduced rating matrix produced on each client’s equipment. Meanwhile, there lacks a systematic means to evaluate the differential privacy (DP), which is a critical security measure in many distributed systems, particularly when sensitive data are processed. In this work, we first introduce a novel personalized dimensionalityreduction algorithm utilizing the matrix sketching technique. This new algorithm effectively control the difference between the original rating matrix on the server and the dimensionality-reduced rating matrix on each client’s equipment. Moreover, a randomized DP matrix factorization algorithm is designed to be executed at each client’s equipment. The theoretical proof is also carried out to show how much DP can be attained by use of the aforementioned randomized DP matrix factorization algorithm. Finally, extensive numerical studies are presented to evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed novel algorithms using both simulated and real datasets for building the FeMRSs.
