In this work, we investigate causal learning of independent causal mechanisms from a Bayesian perspective. Confirming previous claims from the literature, we show in a didactically accessible manner that unlabeled data (i.e., cause realizations) do not improve the estimation of the parameters defining the mechanism. Furthermore, we observe the importance of choosing an appropriate prior for the cause and mechanism parameters, respectively. Specifically, we show that a factorized prior results in a factorized posterior, which resonates with Janzing and Schölkopf’s definition of independent causal mechanisms via the Kolmogorov complexity of the involved distributions and with the concept of parameter independence of Heckerman et al. Maximizing the Smallest Eigenvalue of Grounded Laplacian Matrix

For a connected graph G = (V, E) with n nodes, m edges, and Laplacian matrix L, a grounded Laplacian matrix L(S) of G is a (n − k) × (n − k) principal submatrix of L, obtained from L by deleting k rows and columns corresponding to k selected nodes forming a set S ⊆ V . The smallest eigenvalue λ(S) of L(S) plays a pivotal role in various dynamics defined on G. For example, λ(S) characterizes the convergence rate of leader-follower consensus, as well as the effectiveness of a pinning scheme for the pinning control problem, with larger λ(S) corresponding to smaller convergence time or better effectiveness of a pinning scheme. In this paper, we focus on the problem of optimally selecting a subset S of fixed k n nodes, in order to maximize the smallest eigenvalue λ(S) of the grounded Laplacian matrix L(S). We show that this optimization problem is NP-hard and that the objective function is non-submodular but monotone. Due to the difficulty to obtain the optimal solution, we first propose a näıve heuristic algorithm selecting one optimal node at each time for k iterations. Then we propose a fast heuristic scalable algorithm to approximately solve this problem, using derivative matrix, matrix perturbations, and Laplacian solvers as tools. Our näıve heuristic algorithm takes ˜O(knm) time, while the fast greedy heuristic has a nearly linear time complexity of ˜O(km), where ˜O(・) notation suppresses the poly(log n) factors. We also conduct numerous experiments on different networks sized up to one million nodes, demonstrating the superiority of our algorithm in terms of efficiency and effectiveness compared to baseline methods. Seafood analogs using culture cell or plant-based materials are rising for future food supply, but the bionic design of them is still an issue of finely simulating the multiscale structure and function of fishes. For salmon, we compared the back, belly and tail tissues via microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) scanning with optimized tissue contrast and spatial resolution. The optimum staining conditions of salmon muscle tissue for micro-CT was 3.75% IKI (iodine-potassium iodide) solution for 7 days, and the muscle could be separated well from fat and connective tissue. The results of visualization analysis were correlated with the texture profile analysis. A relatively high magnification (3 µm/pixel) was used with fiber tracing procedure to analyze the connection of muscle fiber bundles surrounded by soft tissue. Single muscle fiber (e.g., diameter 39 µm) was successfully and artificially separated from whole visualized tissue through manual division. Overall, this study proved a novel ultra-high-resolution method based on micro-CT to conduct digital analysis of muscle fascicle architecture, and constructed printable model of bionic animal/plant tissue for food design. © 2022, The Authors. Isn’t it wonderful to see a floating body in the sky? Challenging multiple physics laws with remarkable control and stability. These are today’s flying vehicles. In this paper, the secret of this technique will be revealed differently. In the first place, the modeling of the system takes place using the Newton-Euler method allowing the balance of forces and moments on different parts of the manipulator, taking into account the disturbing factors acting on the aerial vehicle. It is therefore essential to design a controller (position and attitude) to ensure the stability of the floating body when following the desired set-point in the form of a 3D trajectory, a robust nonlinear controller based on the Lyapunov theory is designed. This latter has the ability to compensate the uncertain disturbing factors acting on the quadrotor. A comparative study of proportional-derivative (PD) and backstepping controllers comes to take place by comparing their performances using Matlab/Simulink as workspace environment to implement the plant model and different types of controllers. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

The monitoring and fault detection for the Czochralski (Cz) crystal growth process is important to ensure the quality of the produced mono-crystalline silicon. The Cz process is a typical multi-modes industrial process, which makes the detection difficult in distinguish the change caused by the fault or mode switching. In this paper, an adaptive fault detection strategy for Cz crystal growth process is proposed. Firstly, quality-related variables are selected from numerous process variables, based on which the training dataset is constructed. Then, a fault detection model is built based on slowly-varying feature and statics indicator. A model switching strategy and updating algorithm are designed to handle the abnormal situation caused by the mode switching or fault occurrence. Three representative experiments are conducted to verify the performance of the proposed strategy, including numerical cases, a publicly available dataset, and Cz crystal growth process from our laboratory. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Self-powered two-dimensional (2D) polarization-sensitive photodetectors have propelled the advancement of the next-generation optoelectronics. However, currently such devices mainly depend on the stacking of multiple 2D heterojunctions to realize this function, which demands precise operational procedures and strict band alignment. Herein, we present the achievement of self-powered polarization photodetection in 2D GaInS 3 via strain engineering. This primarily depends on the intrinsic in-plane anisotropic structure and internal spontaneous polarization of 2D GaInS 3 . Remarkedly, the strained GaInS 3 devices exhibit superior optoelectronic performance with a high on/off ratio (>10 4 ), and large anisotropy ratio (∼5.4). Furthermore, the strained device can achieve self-powered high-resolution polarization imaging. This work offers a guideline valuable for developing high-performance 2D self-powered polarization photodetectors.

This paper focuses on the development of the mathematical model of shear stress by direct shear test for compressible soil of the littoral region, which will be a great tool in the hand of geotechnical engineers. The most common use of a shear test is to determine the shear strength which is the maximum shear stress that a material can withstand before the failure occurs. This parameter is useful in many engineering designs such as foundations, roads and retaining walls. We carried out an experimental laboratory test of ten samples of undisturbed soil taken at different points of the border of Wouri river of Cameroon. The samples were collected at different depths and a direct shear test was conducted. The investigations have been performed under constant vertical stresses and constant sample volume with the aim to determine the frictional angle and the cohesion of the compressible soil which are so important to establish the conditions of buildings stability. Special care was taken to derive loading conditions actually existing in the ground and to duplicate them in the laboratory. Given that the buildings constructed in this area are subjected to settlement, landslide, and punch break or shear failure, the cohesion and the frictional angle are determined through the rupture line after assessed the mean values of the shear stress for the considered ten samples. The bearing capacity of the soil, which is the fundamental soil parameter, was calculated. From the laboratory experimental results, the least squared method was used to derive an approximated mathematical model of the shearing stress. Many optimizations methods were then considered to reach the best adjustment.

This study investigates the size-induced axial segregation of binary mixtures in rotating drums, particularly focusing on the effect of drum length. The results indicate that long drums require more time to achieve stable segregation and form more segregation bands. The core region under the free bed surface remains predominantly filled with small particles, indicating that radial segregation occurs simultaneously with the axial segregation. The angle of repose of large particle bands is consistently greater than that of small particle bands, which drives the migration of large particles. Short drums are more sensitive to changes in rotational speed, while long drums with moderate rotational speed promote the formation of segregation bands. The width of small particle bands shows an increasing–decreasing-stabilizing trend with the drum length increasing. An analysis of particle velocities reveals that the characteristics of segregation bands are closely related to the relative velocity difference between large and small particles.
