A current-mode CMOS design is proposed for realizing receive mode multi-beams in the analog domain using a novel DFT approximation. High-bandwidth CMOS RF transistors are employed in low-voltage current mirrors to achieve bandwidths exceeding 4 GHz with good beam fidelity. Current mirrors realize the coefficients of the considered DFT approximation, which take simple values in {0,±1,±2} only. This allows high bandwidths realizations using simple circuitry without needing phase-shifters or delays. The proposed design is used as a method to efficiently achieve spatial discrete Fourier transform operation across a ULA to obtain multiple simultaneous RF beams. An example using 1.2 V current-mode approximate DFT on 65 nm CMOS, with BSIM4 models from the RF kit, show potential operation up to 4 GHz with eight independent aperture beams.

This paper investigates the achievable sum-rate of uplink massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems considering a practical channel impairment, namely, aged channel state information (CSI). Taking into account both maximum ratio combining (MRC) and zero-forcing (ZF) receivers at the base station, we present tight closed-form lower bounds on the sum-rate for both receivers, which provide efficient means to evaluate the sum-rate of the system. More importantly, we characterize the impact of channel aging on the power scaling law. Specifically, we show that the transmit power of each user can be scaled down by 1/√(M), which indicates that aged CSI does not affect the power scaling law; instead, it causes only a reduction on the sum rate by reducing the effective signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR).

Kernel-based methods have been widely used in various machine learning tasks. The performance of these methods strongly relies on the choice of the kernel which represents the similarity between each pair of data points. Therefore, choosing an appropriate kernel function or tuning its parameter(s) is an important issue in the kernel-based methods. Multiple Kernel Learning (MKL) methods have been developed to tackle this problem by learning an optimal combination of a set of predefined kernels. Distance Metric Learning (DML) approaches have been also attracted the attention of a number of researchers in order to find an optimum metric automatically. In this paper, within the framework of the SVM classifier, we present a MKL method which is based on the concept of the distance metric learning theory. The method is compared to the other popularly used MKL approaches. We show that the MKL methods generally outperform the best kernel.

Due to recent technical advancements of three-dimensional ultrasound imaging systems, applications of this imaging modality have been expanding from the fetal imaging to cardiac- and abdominal-diagnosis. Among all internal organs, diagnosing the kidney has a paramount importance for rapid bedside treatment of trauma and kidney stone patients using ultrasound images. Although three-dimensional ultrasound provides higher level of structural information of kidneys, manual kidney diagnosis using three-dimensional ultrasound images requires a highly trained medical staff, due to the extensive visual complexity which three-dimensional images contain. Therefore, computer aided automated kidney diagnosis becomes very essential. Due to the challenging problems of ultrasound images, such as speckle noise and inhomogeneous intensity profile, kidney segmentation in three-dimensional ultrasound images has not been sufficiently investigated by researchers. In this paper, we first propose a new automated kidney detection approach using three-dimensional Morison's pouch ultrasound images. Then, we proposed a shape-based method to segment the detected kidneys. A preprocessing step is utilized to overcome the ultrasound challenges. Based on a set of 14 ultrasound volumes, we have evaluated the detection rate of our proposed kidney detection approach which is 92.86%. For kidney segmentation, we compared our proposed method with an existing approach, and the performed statistical analysis strongly validates the superiority of our proposed method with p = 0.000032.

This paper discusses the discretisation of the eddy-current term of the magnetoquasistatic subset of the Maxwell equations in a 2D setting with radial symmetry. It is shown that dedicated finite element shape functions are needed to make sure that particular distributions of the magnetic flux density and the electric field strength can be resolved exactly. Moreover, the shape functions should obey a partition-of-unity property and should achieve a prescribed convergence order. The 2D solver with radial symmetry is applied to calculate the performance of a multi-coil induction cooking system. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In the recent past the concept of MIMO (multiple input multiple output) transmission over multimode fibers has attracted increasing interest in the optical fiber transmission community, targeting at increased fiber throughput or improved bit-error rate performance. In this contribution a coherent (2 ×2) MIMO (multiple input multiple output) transmission with iterative detection over a measured multimode fiber channel at 1325 nm as well as at 1570 nm operating wavelength is studied under the constraint of a given fixed data throughput and integrity. For the channel measurements a fibre length of 1,4 km were chosen. Extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) charts are used for analyzing and optimizing the convergence behaviour of the iterative demapping and decoding. Our results show that in order to achieve the best bit-error rate, not necessarily all MIMO layers have to be activated. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

In the recent past the concept of MIMO (multiple input multiple output) transmission over multimode fibers has attracted increasing interest in the optical fiber transmission community, targeting at increased fiber throughput or improved bit-error rate performance. Mostly, the possible performance improvements are calculated by computer simulations, which require some knowledge about the underlying system. Here, measurements results can be helpful to improve the quality of the estimated performance improvements. That’s why in this contribution a signal theoretic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system model for estimating modal and chromatic dispersion is developed. Based on channel measurements within a 1,4km MIMO multimode channel parameters for modal and chromatic dispersion are estimated. Furthermore, taking given parameters of the dispersion into account, the introduced signal theoretic MIMO system model enables a reconstruction of the MIMO specific impulse responses. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

MIMO techniques allow increasing wireless channel performance by decreasing the BER and increasing the channel throughput and in consequence are included in current mobile communication standards. MIMO techniques are based on benefiting the existence of multipath in wireless communications and the application of appropriate signal processing techniques. The singular value decomposition (SVD) is a popular signal processing technique which, based on the perfect channel state information (PCSI) knowledge at both the transmitter and receiver sides, removes inter-antenna interferences and improves channel performance. Nevertheless, the proximity of the multiple antennas at each front-end produces the so called antennas correlation effect due to the similarity of the various physical paths. In consequence, antennas correlation drops the MIMO channel performance. This investigation focuses on the analysis of a MIMO channel under transmitter-side antennas correlation conditions. First, antennas correlation is analyzed and characterized by the correlation coefficients. The analysis describes the relation between antennas correlation and the appearance of predominant layers which significantly affect the channel performance. Then, based on the SVD, pre- and post-processing is applied to remove inter-antenna interferences. Finally, bit- and power allocation strategies are applied to reach the best performance. The resulting BER reveals that antennas correlation effect diminishes the channel performance and that not necessarily all MIMO layers must be activated to obtain the best performance. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.
