Wavelets have been studied and applied in the multimedia and video processing community, including some areas in medical imaging, however, wavelet-based medical image registration has not been explored properly. In this paper, we propose an hierarchical registration method based on wavelet decomposition. Firstly, based on the wavelets, the images are decomposed into subbands which compose the registration pyramid; then, in each hierarchy, the affine registration based on mutual information is performed and the results of the current registration are used as the initial guess for the next hierarchy; finally, to further improve the registration performance, the local elastic registration is carried out. The proposed algorithm has been validated by experiments on clinical tomographic images and our experimental results demonstrate the the proposed method is of efficiency and good accuracy.

In this paper, a new frequency offset compensation scheme for up link of multicarrier code-division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems is proposed. The proposed scheme exploits guard interval (GI) information embedded in MC-CDMA symbol blocks and is an extension of the work in F. Daffara and A. Chouly (May 1993). Simulation results show that the new scheme results in improved performance in MC-CDMA uplink. © 2003 IEEE.

As an important integral part of medial image modeling, medical image registration provides unique and necessary information for many clinical applications. In this paper, a novel nonlinear medical image registration approach is proposed. By combining intensity-based registration method with landmark-based registration method, the proposed algorithm can register medical images automatically and accurately. Firstly, the global affine registration method based on image intensity is used to initialize a starting estimation of the robust registration algorithm. Then, by using iterative landmark based algorithm, the affine registration results are registered to further improve the registration accuracy, in which, the novel automatic landmark localization method is introduced and the thin-plate spline is used to refine the registration precision. The clinical MR data are used in our experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Copyright © 2003 IF AC.

High frequency (HF) interference in surface wave over-the-horizon (OTH) radars typically exhibits a time-varying or non-stationary spatial structure. Adaptive beamformers that update the spatial filtering weight vector within the coherent processing interval (CPI) are likely to suppress such interference most effectively, but the intra-CPI antenna pattern fluctuations result in temporal de-correlation of the clutter which severely degrades sub-clutter visibility after Doppler processing. A robust adaptive beamformer that effectively suppresses non-stationary interference without degrading sub-clutter visibility is proposed. The new algorithm is computationally efficient and suitable for practical implementation. Its operational performance is evaluated using experimental data recorded by the Iluka HF surface wave (HFSW) OTH radar, located near Darwin in far north Australia.

We investigated the relationship between the intracranial pulse pressure (ICP/sub PP/) and the mean intracranial pressure (ICP/sub M/). In adult patients, several research groups have described a linear relationship between ICP/sub PP/ and ICP/sub M/ within the range of cerebral autoregulation. Current monitoring and therapy are mainly based on the mean ICP/sub M/, since it is believed that the ICP/sub M/ contains most of the information provided by the other pulse morphology metrics. In this paper we attempt to answer whether there is further information within the ICP morphology not explained by ICP/sub M/ that might be of prognostic significance. We screened ICP records of 42 patients admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Doernbecher Children's Hospital for segments in which the ICP/sub M/ varied at least 5 mmHg during a 1-hour period. We found 54 segments in 9 different pediatric TBI patients (ages 0.2-17.8 years, mean=9.9 years). ICP/sub PP/ and ICP/sub M/ were calculated for each pulse using an automatic pressure detection algorithm. The coefficient of linear correlation r was > 0.70 in 43/54 segments (p < 0.001), which indicates that there exists a linear relationship between ICP/sub PP/ and ICP/sub M/. However, we found r > 0.90 only in 16/54 segments (p=NS) . This result and visual inspection of ICP/sub PP/ vs. ICP/sub M/ density plots suggest that ICP pulse pressure is not fully explained by the ICP M.

Recent advances in computer arithmetic offer interesting alternative solutions for low-power design. Depending on an assortment of factors that need to be considered, it is worth evaluating the logarithmic number system (LNS) or the residue number system (RNS) for hardware implementations of computationally intensive tasks. As such, the choice of arithmetic can lead to substantial power savings.

In this paper, we evaluate the capacity performance of multirate multicell DS-CDMA wireless local loop system with narrowbeam antenna and SINR based power control. Multiple access interference from the surrounding cells in the multicell environment is firstly studied for both uplink and downlink. It can be seen from the results that the capacity can be improved effectively by directional antenna equipped at the subscriber side. More significant improvement can be achieved if multi-element antenna array is employed at the base station. In addition, the analysis is also extended to the situation of multimedia multirate transmission. The results show that, regardless of the voice to data user population ratio, the bit rate traffic supported by the system is roughly constant for a set of predetermined parameter values. © 2001 Plenum Publishing Corporation.

A method for embedding watermarks in digital objects is presented. The proposed scheme is endowed with self-synchronization capabilities that allow watermark detection even if the object has been manipulated. The proposed method bases its efficiency on the embedding of a two-dimensional pattern in the spatial domain that allows fast synchronization recovery in cases the object has been manipulated. This renders the system very suitable for copyright protection of objects in MPEG-4.
