A multichannel biomedical signal acquisition system based on core processor STM32F405 of the Cortex-M4 is presented in this paper. The paper describes the system mainly from the perspective of hardware and software design. The hardware design includes three major parts - the power conversion circuit, the signal acquisition circuit and the signal processing circuit. For the software module, data collection and transmission, and design of digital filters are of the research focus. It is demonstrated in experimental tests that the system can extract and collect a variety of human physiological signals in complex environments. In addition, data transmission between the system and PC is supported by Ethernet, which enables remote monitoring of biomedical signals of humans. © 2015 IEEE.

In this paper the earlier proposed short-time objective intelligibility predictor (STOI) is simplified such that it can be expressed as a weighted l(2) norm in the auditory domain. Due to the mathematical properties of a norm, STOI can now be used with the matching pursuit algorithm in the n-of-m channel selection technique as found in several cochlear implant (CI) coding strategies. With this technique only a subset of frequency channels (electrodes) are stimulated, such that important channels can be updated more frequently and less significant channels are omitted. Intelligibility predictions with acoustic CI-simulations for normal-hearing listeners indicate that more intelligible speech is obtained with the proposed method compared to a conventional channel selection method based on peak picking. Reasons for this difference in performance are: (1) STOI considers an analysis window of a few hundreds of milliseconds in order to account for important low temporal modulations for speech intelligibility and (2) spectral leakage per channel is accounted for in the mathematical optimization process.

In this paper, we formulate a speech enhancement problem under multiple hypotheses, assuming an indicator for the lens motor noise presence is available in the time domain. This approach is largely based on an existing speech enhancement algorithm [3], and was adapted to specifically handle lens motor noises. Hypothetical presence of speech together with an estimation of the stationary noise and the lens motor noise, are considered in the calculation of the desired signal spectral coefficients. Cost parameters control the trade-off between speech distortion and residual transient noise. An optimal estimator, which minimizes the mean-square error of the log-spectral amplitude, is derived, while taking into account the probability of erroneous detection. Experimental results demonstrate a substantial suppression of the motor noise with a minimal degrade to the perceived quality of the desired signal. © 2008 IEEE.

In this paper, we study various video stabilization techniques and develop an algorithm which can perform video stabilization under strict time constraints. To do this, an optimized version of block matching in a restricted search space is utilized to minimize the use of computational resources. We also develop an experimental setup to do real-time video stabilization under various vibrating conditions. In this study, we have also compared our algorithm with an existing stabilization algorithm and looked at how the two techniques perform under different circumstances. © 2017 IEEE.

Recently, cybersickness assessment for VR content is required to deal with viewing safety issues. Assessing physical symptoms of individual viewers is challenging but important to provide detailed and personalized guides for viewing safety. In this paper, we propose a novel symptom-aware cybersickness assessment network (SACA Net) that quantifies physical symptom levels for assessing cybersickness of individual viewers. The SACA Net is designed to utilize the relational characteristics of symptoms for complementary effects among relevant symptoms. The proposed network consists of three main parts: a stimulus symptom context guider, a physiological symptom guider, and a symptom relation embedder. The stimulus symptom context guider and the physiological symptom guider extract symptom features from VR content and human physiology, respectively. The symptom relation embedder refines the stimulus-response symptom features to effectively predict cybersickness by embedding relational characteristics with graph formulation. For validation, we utilize two public 360-degree video datasets that contain cybersickness scores and physiological signals. Experimental results show that the proposed method is effective in predicting human cybersickness with physical symptoms. Further, latent relations among symptoms are interpretable by analyzing relational weights in the proposed network. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Shallow depth-of-field is an inherent property of optical microscope. Because of this limitation, it is usually impossible to image large three-dimensional (3D) objects entirely in focus. However, the in-focus information of the object's surface can be acquired over a range of images by optical sectioning of the object in consideration. These images can then be processed to generate a single in-focus image and further for 3D shape reconstruction using methods like Shape from focus (SFF). SFF represents a passive technique for recovering object shapes. Although numerous methods for SFF have been recently proposed, all follow similar precedent of focus measure application and depth recovery by maximizing the focus curves. As the conventional techniques assume the presence of prominent texture in the scene, the shape of weak textured surfaces are not recovered properly. In this manuscript, we have followed an unorthodox approach to recover shapes of microscopic objects using SFF. At first, the in-focus image is obtained, pursued by computing depth along the edges and their neighbors present in scene. Empty spaces in the final depth map are then calculated by surface interpolation. The proposed approach works well even for objects with weak textures. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

This paper demonstrates the potential of theoretically motivated learning methods in solving the problem of non-intrusive quality estimation for which the state-of-the-art is represented by ITU-T P.563 standard. To construct our estimator, we adopt the speech features from P.563, while we use a different mapping of features to form quality estimates. In contrast to P.563 which assumes distortion-classes to divide the feature space, our approach divides the feature space based on a clustering which is learned from the data using Bayesian inference. Despite using weaker modeling assumptions, we are still able to achieve comparable accuracy on predicting mean-opinion-scores with P.563. Our work suggests Bayesian model-evidence as an alternative metric to correlation-coefficient for determining the necessary number of experts for modeling the data. ©2010 IEEE.

Tissue P systems are distributed parallel and non-deterministic computing models in the framework of membrane computing, which are inspired by intercellular communication and cooperation between neurons. Recently, cell separation is introduced into tissue P systems, which enables systems to generate an exponential workspace in a polynomial time. In this work, the computational power of tissue P systems with cell separation is investigated. Specifically, a uniform family of tissue P systems with cell separation is constructed for effciently solving a well-known NP-complete problem, the partition problem.

In recent studies, Independent Component Analysis (ICA) has been used for the analysis of multi-channel ECG recordings. However most of these works have been carried out from the signal processing perspective. In this work, the single dipole vector theory of the heart and the ECG dimensionality are studied from the source separation viewpoint. Based on this study, the interpretation of the components extracted from multi-channel ECG and maternal abdominal recordings, and their relationship with the vectorcardiogram representation of the cardiac dipole are presented. The results of this study can be used for the extraction of meaningful clinical indexes, based on ICA techniques.

In recent years, research in automatic Sign Language Recognition (SLR) has undergone significant progress, serving as a founda-tional base for developing applications that aim to promote the integration of deaf individuals into society. Most of this progress is owed to the recent developments in deep learning. However, the deployment of conventional Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) can be hindered by their requirements in terms of computational power and energy consumption. Therefore, to improve the ef-ciency of current SLR systems, in this work, we propose the use of the increasingly popular Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs), which, on the one hand, provide more energy-efficient computations than conventional ANNs and, on the other hand, are able to process temporal sequences with simpler architectures thanks to their temporal dynamics. To evaluate our method, we utilize WLASL300, the 300-word (300 classes of signs) dataset from Word-Level American Sign Language, and achieve an improvement in accuracy with the SNN (+2.70%) over the previous state-of-the-art, when working with energy-efficient spiking neurons. Furthermore, we construct a non-spiking version of the same network and evaluate it in a similar manner. Our results demonstrate how the SNN has sparser activations (25% less), thanks to the use of spiking neurons, and therefore can be implemented with a lower power requirement than an ANN version of the same architecture. This work thus demonstrates the possibility of performing SLR in a very effective and efficient way, thus opening up the development of applications that span from the automatic real-time translation of dynamic signs to remote control utilizing sign languages. © 2024 Elsevier B.V..
