Automation of Electroencephalogram (EEG) analysis can significantly help the neurologist during the diagnosis of epilepsy. During last few years lot of work has been done in the field of computer assisted analysis to detect an epileptic activity in an EEG. Still there is a significant amount of need to make these computer assisted EEG analysis systems more convenient and informative for a neurologist. After briefly discussing some of the existing work we have suggested an approach which can make these systems more helpful, detailed and precise for the neurologist. In our proposed approach we have handled each epoch of each channel for each type of epileptic pattern exclusive to each other. In our approach feature extraction starts with an application of multilevel Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) on each 1 sec non-overlapping epochs. Then we apply Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to reduce the effect of redundant and noisy data. Afterwards we apply Support Vector Machine (SVM) to classify these epochs as Epileptic or not. In our system a user can mark any mistakes he encounters. The concept behind the inclusion of the retraining is that, if there is more than one example with same attributes but different labels, the classifier is going to get trained to the one with most population. These corrective marking will be saved as examples. On retraining the classifier will improve its classification, hence it will tries to adapt the user. In the end we have discussed the results we have acquired till now. Due to limitation in the available data we are only able to report the classification performance for generalised absence seizure. The reported accuracy is resulted on very versatile dataset of 21 patients from Punjab Institute of Mental Health (PIMH) and 21 patients from Children Hospital Boston (CHB) which have different number of channel and sampling frequency. This usage of the data proves the robustness of our algorithm.

In this paper the earlier proposed short-time objective intelligibility predictor (STOI) is simplified such that it can be expressed as a weighted l_2 norm in the auditory domain. Due to the mathematical properties of a norm, STOI can now be used with the matching pursuit algorithm in the n-of-m channel selection technique as found in several cochlear implant (CI) coding strategies. With this technique only a subset of frequency channels (electrodes) are stimulated, such that important channels can be updated more frequently and less significant channels are omitted. Intelligibility predictions with acoustic CI-simulations for normal-hearing listeners indicate that more intelligible speech is obtained with the proposed method compared to a conventional channel selection method based on peak picking. Reasons for this difference in performance are: (1) STOI considers an analysis window of a few hundreds of milliseconds in order to account for important low temporal modulations for speech intelligibility and (2) spectral leakage per channel is accounted for in the mathematical optimization process.

Recently, Gutiérrez-Naranjo and Leporati considered performing basic arithmetic operations on a new class of bioinspired computing devices - spiking neural P systems (for short, SN P systems). However, the binary encoding mechanism used in their research looks like the encoding approach in electronic circuits, instead of the style of spiking neurons (in usual SN P systems, information are encoded as the time interval between spikes). In this work, three SN P systems are constructed as adder, subtracter and multiplier, respectively. In these devices, a number is inputted to the system as the interval of time elapsed between two spikes received by input neuron, the result of a computation is the time between the moments when the output neuron spikes. © 2011 IEEE.

Some patients with refractory epilepsy can benefit from surgical removal of the brain region responsible for causing the epileptic seizures, i.e. the epileptogenic focus. In several cases the patient is admitted for Invasive Video Electroencephalography Monitoring (IVEM) to delineate the ictal onset zone based on intracranial electroencephalographic (IEEG) signals. However, in clinical practice this delineation is based on a visual identification strategy out of the IEEG signals. The purpose of this study is to identify the epileptogenic focus based on the concept of functional brain connectivity. The full frequency Adapted Directed Transfer Function (ffADTF) values were calculated for each seizure of the 2 investigated patients. The mean out-degree, i.e. the sum of outgoing connections, over all seizures for each patient was calculated out of the ffADTF-values. The epileptogenic focus was identified based on the mean out-degree. The localization of the hypothesized epileptogenic focus in the 2 patients was concordant with post-operative findings. We showed that connectivity patterns derived out of the ffADTF analysis can provide useful information about seizure propagation and may improve the accuracy of the presurgical evaluation in patients affected by refractory epilepsy.

We present a multi-resolution space carving algorithm that reconstructs a 3D model of visual scene photographed by a calibrated digital camera placed at multiple viewpoints. Our approach employs a level set framework for reconstructing the scene. Unlike most standard space carving approaches, our level set approach produces a smooth reconstruction composed of manifold surfaces. Our method outputs a polygonal model, instead of a collection of voxels. We texturemap the reconstructed geometry using the photographs, and then render the model to produce photo-realistic new views of the scene.

Video summarization provides condensed and succinct representations of the content of a video stream. A static storyboard summarization approach based on robust low-rank subspace segmentation is proposed in this paper. Firstly, video frames are represented as multi-dimensional vectors, and then embedded into a group of affine subspaces using low-rank representation according to the content similarity of the frames in the same subspace. Secondly, a series of subspaces are segmented based on the Normalized Cuts algorithm. The video summary is finally generated by choosing key frames from the significant subspaces and ranking these key frames in temporal order. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed summarization algorithm can produce crucial key frames and effectively reduce the visual content redundancy in summary comparing with the conventional approaches. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

Shape descriptions based on the traditional chain codes are very susceptible to small perturbations in the contours of the objects. Therefore, direct matching of traditional chain codes could not be used for image retrieval based on the shape boundaries from the large databases. In this paper, a histogram based chain codes are proposed which could be used for image retrieval. The modified chain codes matching are invariant to translation, rotation and scaling transformations, and have high immunity to noise and small perturbations. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

Emerging of HDTV accelerates evolution of high-resolution imaging system. A 3CCD digital camera system has been developed for higher resolution than a CCD imaging has. From the pixel correlation caused by half-pixel shift of the green channel, we can interpolate pixels and get four times higher resolution of color image. The proposed method involves three projection operators. The first is to reduce aliasing of image regions by selective projection in subband channels. The second projection makes inverse of MTF which generates blurring over the entire image. The last operator works for fast convergence. From the experimental result, the proposed algorithm shows suppression of jagging effects and restoration of aliased image regions. It is experimentally shown that the projection process converges and is almost finished at the first iteration. © 2005 IEEE.

Magnetic resonance (MR) image recovery from the undersampled k-space data using fixed basis transforms such as wavelet utilizes the global sparsity of images. On the other hand, redundant representation schemes such as block-matching and 3D filtering (BM3D) make use of the the non-local sparsity of images, resulting in better preservation of finer details. But, use of any of these individual methods cannot utilize global and non-local sparsity at the same time. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for efficient combination of the global and non-local sparsity through the use of the fast composite splitting denoising (FCSD) algorithm. Here wavelets and BM3D are used for global and non-local sparsity, respectively. Additionally, we use adaptive iterative soft thresholding algorithm (ISTA) for wavelet recovery that uses an adaptive regularization parameter (threshold) in each iteration. The proposed adaptive fast composite splitting denoising (AFCSD) algorithm combines the merits of both BM3D with adaptive ISTA. This is because, it utilizes the self-repetitive structure in images by enforcing nonlocal sparsity as well as entire consistency of the image. The proposed method is superior to any of the individual methods in terms of reconstructed image quality, computation complexity and compute time. Furthermore, we show that the combined sparsity constraint can yield further improvements in reconstruction with significant reduction in the compute time when used as an auxiliary constraint in Dictionary Learning (DL), compared to a standard DL reconstruction.

This paper introduces row-column transforms (RCTs) which are 2-D non-separable transforms defined with the aid of a set of 1-D linear transforms and a basis ordering permutation. We propose a novel method for the design of row-column transforms that approximate desired complex transforms (such as KLTs, SOTs, etc.) so that most of the performance of the approximated transforms is retained at significantly reduced complexity. Given a non-separable block transform of interest, our method designs an RCT by (i) optimizing a set of 1-D transforms applied to rows and columns of the signal block and (ii) finding the best transform coefficient ordering permutation. Our experimental results show that optimized RCTs closely approach the compression performance of the desired non-separable transforms while retaining the computational complexity of separable transforms.
