We introduce new soft diamond regularizers that both improve synaptic sparsity and maintain classification accuracy in deep neural networks. These parametrized regularizers outperform the state-of-the-art hard-diamond Laplacian regularizer of Lasso regression and classification. They use thick-tailed symmetric alpha-stable (SαS) bell-curve synaptic weight priors that are not Gaussian and so have thicker tails. The geometry of the diamond-shaped constraint set varies from a circle to a star depending on the tail thickness and dispersion of the prior probability density function. Training directly with these priors is computationally intensive because almost all SαS probability densities lack a closed form. A precomputed look-up table removed this computational bottleneck. We tested the new soft diamond regularizers with deep neural classifiers on the three datasets CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, and Caltech-256. The regularizers improved the accuracy of the classifiers. The improvements included 4.57% on CIFAR-10, 4.27% on CIFAR-100, and 6.69% on Caltech-256. They also outperformed L2 regularizers on all the test cases. Soft diamond regularizers also outperformed L1 lasso or Laplace regularizers because they better increased sparsity while improving classification accuracy. Soft-diamond priors substantially improved accuracy on CIFAR-10 when combined with dropout, batch, or data-augmentation regularization. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Learning Probabilistic Coordinate Fields for Robust Correspondences

We introduce Probabilistic Coordinate Fields (PCFs), a novel geometric-invariant coordinate representation for image correspondence problems. In contrast to standard Cartesian coordinates, PCFs encode coordinates in correspondence-specific barycentric coordinate systems (BCS) with affine invariance. To know when and where to trust the encoded coordinates, we implement PCFs in a probabilistic network termed PCF-Net, which parameterizes the distribution of coordinate fields as Gaussian mixture models. By jointly optimizing coordinate fields and their confidence conditioned on dense flows, PCF-Net can work with various feature descriptors when quantifying the reliability of PCFs by confidence maps. An interesting observation of this work is that the learned confidence map converges to geometrically coherent and semantically consistent regions, which facilitates robust coordinate representation. By delivering the confident coordinates to keypoint/feature descriptors, we show that PCF-Net can be used as a plug-in to existing correspondence-dependent approaches. Extensive experiments on both indoor and outdoor datasets suggest that accurate geometric invariant coordinates help to achieve the state of the art in several correspondence problems, such as sparse feature matching, dense image registration, camera pose estimation, and consistency filtering. Further, the interpretable confidence map predicted by PCF-Net can also be leveraged to other novel applications from texture transfer to multi-homography classification. © 1979-2012 IEEE.

This paper investigates the problem of incipient fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) in wind energy conversion systems (WECS) using an innovative and effective approach called the ensemble learning-sine cosine optimization algorithm (EL-SCOA). The evolved strategy involves two primary steps: first, a sine-cosine algorithm is used to extract and optimize features in order to only select the most descriptive ones. Second, to further improve the capability, thereby providing the highest accuracy performance, the newly gathered dataset is introduced as input to an ensemble learning paradigm, which merges the benefits of boosting and bagging techniques with an artificial neural network classifier. The essential goal of the developed proposal is to discriminate between the diverse operating conditions (one healthy and six faulty conditions). Three potential and frequent types of faults that can affect the system behaviors including short-circuit, open-circuit, and wear-out are considered and thereby injected at diverse locations and sides (grid and generator sides) in order to evaluate the availability and performance of the proposed technique when compared to the conventional FDD methods. The diagnosis performance is analyzed in terms of accuracy, recall, precision, and computation time. The acquired outcomes demonstrate the efficiency of the suggested diagnostic paradigm compared to conventional FDD techniques (accuracy rate has been successfully achieved 98.35%). © 2023, This is a U.S. Government work and not under copyright protection in the US;foreign copyright protection may apply.

Harnessing the power of emotional intelligence by analyzing a person's behavioral and linguistic skills can help humans improve their approach to social interactions. In this paper, we propose an artificial intelligence-based stand-alone system that will allow us to classify and analyze facial expressions in real-time and perform sentiment analysis by examining the body of the text (extracted from audio) to understand the opinion expressed by it. This helps us provide a deeper understanding of how humans really feel at a given time. The proposed system uses a deep neural network (DNN) for classifying eight basic emotions based on features extracted from facial expressions and uses pretrained sentiment analysis tools to quantify text (extracted from audio) based on polarity. The system is implemented by extracting the audio and visual cues from real-time scenarios and using these extracted cues to perform facial expression recognition and text sentiment analysis. The integrated system extracts video and audio simultaneously with a frame rate of 4-5 fps. The facial emotion detection system successfully detects facial expressions of faces detected in real-time video with an accuracy of about 86.75%. The speech extracted is converted to text, cleaned, and processed to determine if the attitude of the speaker in a given situation is positive, negative, or neutral. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper aims at developing algorithms to automate the process of reading analog gauges at different operational industries, healthcare sector and automobiles using Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques. Proposed algorithms start with video stabilization using optical flow followed by image processing which performs segmentation using HSV color space and morphological operations. Next, Hough transform is applied to determine the dial region and pointer. Using the coordinates locating the pointer in the frame, angle made with minimum valued scale mark is calculated using trigonometry and evaluated reading is displayed in the form of text and a progress bar. The proposed algorithms for Analog Gauge Reader (AGR) is executed using open-source libraries such as OpenCV, NumPy, PIL with Python programming and it is developed in the PyCharm environment. The experimental results show significant decrease in the error with the introduction of image preprocessing and the generalizability of the algorithm to different types of analog gauges captured in different conditions of illuminance. The accuracy and precision of the algorithms is 99% to 100% in the experimental studies. © 2022 IEEE.

Groundbreaking features and functionalities are available in sports broadcasting programs, specifically in soccer games, such as post-game analysis, tracking of players, tracking of the ball, and associated teams' and players' statistical information. However, viewers don't have control to choose which features to view on-demand and aren't able to interact with any of these functionalities. Our system aims for the fundamental system of an on-demand viewer-driven application that would be able to track players on the field, identify formation changes, follow team strategy changes, and gather all statistical information of the player and the team on a single screen. In order to realize such an application, we focus on developing a method to track players on the field using multiple Artificial Intelligence (AI) and computer vision techniques where our application employs facial recognition and jersey number recognition algorithms. As a live soccer game broadcast would have various camera views of the players, our custom-made database contains captured images from different scenarios of camera views such as different angles and zooms of the player and is used to train the model using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Our system is scalable to different types of sports, such as basketball, baseball, volleyball, and more where players have their numbers on their jerseys and would be feasible to apply our system since soccer involves more players on the field than other sports games. © 2022 IEEE.

The pansharpening of high-resolution panchromatic (Pan) image and low-resolution multispectral (MS) images represents an important task in the remote sensing field. It allows the joint exploitation of the information derived from both types of images. However, this may cause a distortion of spectral information or a lack in details and structures. The multiresolution analysis using wavelet transforms has proved its efficiency in the pansharpening domain, due to the representation of the image content over different resolution levels. In image fusion applications, we always need more detail information to be incorporated in the pansharpening procedure in order to produce enhanced results. However, the limitation of the wavelet transform to three types of oriented detail coefficients prevents this need from being met. To overcome this limitation, we propose to use the redundant contourlet transform (RCT) which extracts a richer multiscale directional information from the image. For this purpose, two RCT-based pansharpening methods are introduced and suitable data fusion procedures are described. We conducted several experiments on two different datasets acquired respectively by ALSAT-2A and IKONOS satellites. The visual results as well as quantitative results from evaluation metrics demonstrate the performance of the proposed methods. © 2023 IEEE.

Multi-modal signal integration for enhanced sleep stage classification: Leveraging EOG and 2-channel EEG data with advanced feature extraction

This paper introduces an innovative approach to sleep stage classification, leveraging a multi-modal signal integration framework encompassing Electrooculography (EOG) and two-channel electroencephalography (EEG) data. We explore the utility of various feature extraction techniques, including Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT), Wavelet Transform, and raw signal processing, alongside the utilization of neural networks as feature extractors. This unique combination allows us to harness the benefits of traditional feature extraction methods while capitalizing on the power of neural networks to enhance classification performance. Our comprehensive classifier evaluation encompasses a range of models, including Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks and XGBoost. Remarkably, our results reveal exceptional performance with the XGBoost classifier, achieving an overall accuracy of 84.57 % and a macro-F1 score of 78.21 % on the Sleep-EDF expanded dataset, and an overall accuracy of 86.02 % and a macro-F1 score of 81.96 % on the ISRUC-Sleep dataset. Class-specific accuracies highlight its proficiency, particularly in detecting wake and N2 stages, solidifying its superiority among the classifiers tested. This amalgamation of feature sets, complemented by Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for dimensionality reduction, underscores its significance in yielding top-tier classification outcomes. The integration of traditional feature extraction methods with neural networks as feature extractors creates a robust and comprehensive system for sleep stage classification, offering the advantages of both approaches to enhance the accuracy and reliability of the results. © 2025

Simulations are commonly used to develop and evaluate video encryption algorithms. Although these approaches are useful for demonstrating theoretical feasibility and algorithm performance, they neglect practical challenges and real-world communication conditions. This oversight creates a critical gap in evaluating their effectiveness and security in practical applications. In this paper, we describe a novel, to the best of our knowledge, video encryption scheme that employs a modified chaotic Colpitts oscillator, a customized Josephus problem, and ribonucleic acid (RNA) operations, and is implemented in visible light communication (VLC) environment. The modified Colpitts oscillator reveals significant phenomena, the most prominent for this study being chaos. The encryption scheme involves block scrambling and pixel-level permutation employing a customized Josephus problem and a column and row shifting technique. Diffusion is then achieved through a custom Josephus problem-oriented RNA operation combined with basic RNA operations and cipher block chaining (CBC). Based on the results, we found that the customized Josephus problem-based permutation performed more efficiently than traditional methods, whereas the column and row shifting permutation was more robust. By eliminating key sequence coding and item-to-item operations, the proposed RNA operation reduces computational overhead. This video encryption scheme is proven to be effective and resilient at securing video data transmitted over the VLC channel, and it constitutes a significant advancement in areas such as surveillance, medical imaging, and military communication requiring robust secured video data. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group.
