We introduce Probabilistic Coordinate Fields (PCFs), a novel geometric-invariant coordinate representation for image correspondence problems. In contrast to standard Cartesian coordinates, PCFs encode coordinates in correspondence-specific barycentric coordinate systems (BCS) with affine invariance. To know when and where to trust the encoded coordinates, we implement PCFs in a probabilistic network termed PCF-Net, which parameterizes the distribution of coordinate fields as Gaussian mixture models. By jointly optimizing coordinate fields and their confidence conditioned on dense flows, PCF-Net can work with various feature descriptors when quantifying the reliability of PCFs by confidence maps. An interesting observation of this work is that the learned confidence map converges to geometrically coherent and semantically consistent regions, which facilitates robust coordinate representation. By delivering the confident coordinates to keypoint/feature descriptors, we show that PCF-Net can be used as a plug-in to existing correspondence-dependent approaches. Extensive experiments on both indoor and outdoor datasets suggest that accurate geometric invariant coordinates help to achieve the state of the art in several correspondence problems, such as sparse feature matching, dense image registration, camera pose estimation, and consistency filtering. Further, the interpretable confidence map predicted by PCF-Net can also be leveraged to other novel applications from texture transfer to multi-homography classification. A2B: Anchor to Barycentric Coordinate for Robust Correspondence

There is a long-standing problem of repeated patterns in correspondence problems, where mismatches frequently occur because of inherent ambiguity. The unique position information associated with repeated patterns makes coordinate representations a useful supplement to appearance representations for improving feature correspondences. However, the issue of appropriate coordinate representation has remained unresolved. In this study, we demonstrate that geometric-invariant coordinate representations, such as barycentric coordinates, can significantly reduce mismatches between features. The first step is to establish a theoretical foundation for geometrically invariant coordinates. We present a seed matching and filtering network (SMFNet) that combines feature matching and consistency filtering with a coarse-to-fine matching strategy in order to acquire reliable sparse correspondences. We then introduce DEGREE, a novel anchor-to-barycentric (A2B) coordinate encoding approach, which generates multiple affine-invariant correspondence coordinates from paired images. DEGREE can be used as a plug-in with standard descriptors, feature matchers, and consistency filters to improve the matching quality. Extensive experiments in synthesized indoor and outdoor datasets demonstrate that DEGREE alleviates the problem of repeated patterns and helps achieve state-of-the-art performance. Furthermore, DEGREE also reports competitive performance in the third image Matching Challenge at CVPR 2021. This approach offers a new perspective to alleviate the problem of repeated patterns and emphasizes the importance of choosing coordinate representations for feature correspondences. We present a factor graph formulation and particle-based sum-product algorithm for robust localization and tracking in multipath-prone environments. The proposed sequential algorithm jointly estimates the mobile agent’s position together with a time-varying number of multipath components (MPCs). The MPCs are represented by "delay biases" corresponding to the offset between line-of-sight (LOS) component delay and the respective delays of all detectable MPCs. The delay biases of the MPCs capture the geometric features of the propagation environment with respect to the mobile agent. Therefore, they can provide position-related information contained in the MPCs without explicitly building a map of the environment. We demonstrate that the position-related information enables the algorithm to provide high-accuracy position estimates even in fully obstructed line-of-sight (OLOS) situations. Using simulated and real measurements in different scenarios we demonstrate that the proposed algorithm significantly outperforms state-of-the-art multipath-aided tracking algorithms and show that the performance of our algorithm constantly attains the posterior Cramér-Rao lower bound (P-CRLB). Furthermore, we demonstrate the implicit capability of the proposed method to identify unreliable measurements and, thus, to mitigate lost tracks. © 2023, CC BY.

In this big data era, distributed machine learning and global data pooling have become quite critical in practical implementation of any multimedia data-science technique. The emerging federated multimedia recommendation systems (FeMRSs) offer a promising approach to address the need of personalized recommendations subject to both users’ privacy and data security. However, there exists no quantitative method for assessing the discrepancy between the large original rating matrix stored on the server and the dimensionality-reduced rating matrix produced on each client’s equipment. Meanwhile, there lacks a systematic means to evaluate the differential privacy (DP), which is a critical security measure in many distributed systems, particularly when sensitive data are processed. In this work, we first introduce a novel personalized dimensionalityreduction algorithm utilizing the matrix sketching technique. This new algorithm effectively control the difference between the original rating matrix on the server and the dimensionality-reduced rating matrix on each client’s equipment. Moreover, a randomized DP matrix factorization algorithm is designed to be executed at each client’s equipment. The theoretical proof is also carried out to show how much DP can be attained by use of the aforementioned randomized DP matrix factorization algorithm. Finally, extensive numerical studies are presented to evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed novel algorithms using both simulated and real datasets for building the FeMRSs.

Nowadays, multimedia data are often produced by various sources, e.g., Internet of Things (IoT), social media, customer databases, etc. As tremendous multimedia data are produced every day, users or E-commerce customers cannot infer information from such data by themselves and therefore recommender systems have been developed to help users to select the products or services which better fit users' preferences or requirements. Nonetheless, there exists few works on the incorporation of side information or multiple attributes about items into the design of a more robust recommender system. In this work, we propose a novel approach based on the third-order tensor singular-value-decomposition (T3-SVD) to design new personalized multimedia recommender systems (PMRSs) for internet users. A PMRS can dynamically adjust its recommendation strategy subject to a particular user's on-line transaction behavior. To evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed PMRS based on T3-SVD, we compare the performances of our proposed new PMRS and two other existing tensor-based recommendation systems over realworld data in terms of normalized root-mean-square error (NRMSE). As a result, our proposed new PMRS greatly outperforms the other two existing systems. © 2023 IEEE.

In medical image analysis, the long-range spatial features are often not accurately obtained by the traditional convolutional neural networks. Hence, we propose a TransClaw U-Net network structure. The transformer part is added after three convolution operations to fuse shallow features extracted by convolution operations for maximally encoding the long-range spatial features between patches. The “Claw” in TransClaw U-net means that we add the bottom upsampling part to retain the deepest feature information for detail segmentation. In addition, the modified three-channel global attention mechanism to blend the outputs of three channels (the encoding part, the bottom upsampling part and the decoding part) to effectively extract image contours. The experimental results on Synapse Multi-organ Segmentation Dataset show that TransClaw U-Net performs better than other networks. The results of ablation experiments prove the effectiveness of the three improved components of the network and influence of input image size and skip-connection numbers on network performance. The source code will be publicly available once the paper is accepted.

Advancements in quantum computing underscore the critical need for sophisticated qubit readout techniques to accurately discern quantum states. This abstract presents our research intended for optimizing readout pulse fidelity for 2D and 3D Quantum processing Units (QPUs), the latter coupled with Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) cavities. Focusing specifically on the application of the Least Mean Squares (LMS) adaptive filtering algorithm, we explore its integration into the FPGA-based control systems to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of qubit state detection by improving signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). Implementing the LMS algorithm on the Zynq UltraScale+ RFSoC Gen 3 devices (RFSoC 4x2 FPGA and ZCU216 FPGA) using the Quantum Instrumentation Control Kit (QICK) open-source platform, we aim to dynamically test and adjust the filtering parameters in real-time to characterize and adapt to the noise profile presented in quantum computing readout signals. Our preliminary results demonstrate the LMS filter's capability to maintain high readout accuracy while efficiently managing FPGA resources. These findings are expected to contribute to developing more reliable and scalable quantum computing architectures, highlighting the pivotal role of adaptive signal processing in quantum technology advancements.

Understanding how the brain works is a base of cognitive info-communication. To this aim we focus on multiple target tracking (MTT) as a key task that involves two important cognitive factors, attention and memory. Humans track multiple objects in their daily life while facing various challenges including occlusion and set-size. Eye movement research has shown that there are within and between subjects’ differences in scanpaths while performing MTT tasks. However, it is unclear if there is a winning scan pattern that would lead to a successful tracking of targets. To answer this question, we used dynamic time warping to compare the similarities between subjects’ scan patterns during an MTT task with different challenges. We studied the effect of set-size, occlusion, and trial response on the similarities. Then a mixed effect analysis was applied on the output to measure whether the findings were statistically significant. Results demonstrated that scan patterns were more similar when MTT task was performed correctly. It suggests that there is a common tracking strategy adopted by the viewers that leads to a correct response. Decoding this strategy has countless applications in the fields including human-computer interaction, brain-modeling and cognitive info-communication.
