Parametric array loudspeakers are able to generate a directional sound beam and recently, it has also been used to help the hearing impaired to hear TV programme better. However, there are incidents that user of particular hearing AIDS have reported audible interferences in the path of directional sound beam during clinical trials. The interference varies from buzzing noise to static noise for various commercialized behind-The-ear hearing AIDS. To investigate the audible interference, hearing AIDS output measurements were carried out using B&K Head and Torso Simulators inside an anechoic room for four units of parametric array loudspeakers. This paper also investigates the possible cause of audible interference and raises awareness to professionals on this interference caused by ultrasound in the air for users wearing hearing AIDS.

The conception and rehabilitation of apartments for people with disabilities, using computer simulation methods, are relatively recent. This paper aims to present a new method of assessing a wheelchair user's capacity to have access to swinging doors, as an example. The accessibility assessment is achieved by determining the adequate maneuvering clearances at doorways for a wheelchair user to open, cross and close, easily, a swinging door. The user's upper body deficiencies are taken into consideration in several wheelchair designs. The results obtained revealed that our method may help designing and rehabilitating apartments for this category of people, while increasing their autonomy and decreasing the risks they may be exposed to. © 2016 IOS Press and the authors. A hierarchical image matting model for blood vessel segmentation in fundus images

In this paper, a hierarchical image matting model is proposed to extract blood vessels from fundus images. More specifically, a hierarchical strategy utilizing the continuity and extendibility of retinal blood vessels is integrated into the image matting model for blood vessel segmentation. Normally the matting models require the user specified trimap, which separates the input image into three regions manually: the foreground, background and unknown regions. However, since creating a user specified trimap is a tedious and time-consuming task, region features of blood vessels are used to generate the trimap automatically in this paper. The proposed model has low computational complexity and outperforms many other state-of-art supervised and unsupervised methods in terms of accuracy, which achieves a vessel segmentation accuracy of 96.0%, 95.7% and 95.1% in an average time of 10.72s, 15.74s and 50.71s on images from three publicly available fundus image datasets DRIVE, STARE, and CHASE_DB1, respectively. The High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard provides a substantial improvement in coding efficiency over previous video coding standards at the cost of a higher computational complexity. HEVC employs a quadtree based image structure by partitioning the image into coding units (CUs). Finding the optimal CU size in terms of rate-distortion is one of the most computationally challenging parts of any HEVC encoder. Previous works for fast CU size selection are usually based on data dependency between neighboring CUs and therefore limit the degree of possible parallelism. In this paper, we present a fast CU size selection method that does not depend on any data from other CUs in the same frame, thus allowing utilization of the high parallel processing capability of many-core processors, such as a GPU. Experimental results show that the proposed method incurs only a negligible loss in rate-distortion performance compared with counterpart methods that limit parallelism.

Distance estimation for marine vessels is of vital importance to unmanned ship vehicles (USVs) for navigation and collision prevention. This can be achieved by means such as radar or laser sighting. However, due to constraints of the USV, it may be desired to estimate distance using a monocular camera. In this paper, we propose a method that, given a video of a marine vehicle in a maritime environment and a tracker, estimates the distance of the tracked vehicle from the camera. The method detects the horizon and uses its distance as a reference. It detects the contact point of the vehicle with the sea surface by finding a maximally stable extremal region (MSER). Then, it relies on geometries of the earth and on optical properties of the camera to compute the distance. The method was tested on video footage of several sea maneuvers with an average error of 7.1%.

Through experiments and numerical simulations we explore the behavior of rf SQUID (radio frequency superconducting quantum interference device) metamaterials, which show extreme tunability and nonlinearity. The emergent electromagnetic properties of this metamaterial are sensitive to the degree of coherent response of the driven interacting SQUIDs. Coherence suffers in the presence of disorder, which is experimentally found to be mainly due to a dc flux gradient. We demonstrate methods to recover the coherence, specifically by varying the coupling between the SQUID meta-atoms and increasing the temperature or the amplitude of the applied rf flux.

This paper presents a method for inferring interaction strength and structure amongst targets in multiple target tracking (MTT) applications. By making simple assumptions, it is shown how an efficient and well-mixing MCMC inference method can be developed to learn about the relationships between tracked targets, including leader-follower relationships, group relationships and the influence of targets on others. This network structure of influence between targets is inferred in a sparse way, setting many interaction terms to zero and allowing for more efficient inference and clearer structural conclusions to be drawn. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated on both synthetic and real animal flocking data.

This paper presents a new approach, called convex cone volume analysis (CCVA), which can be considered as a partially constrained-abundance (abundance non-negativity constraint) technique to find endmembers. It can be shown that finding the maximal volume of a convex cone in the original data space is equivalent to finding the maximal volume of a simplex in a hyperplane. As a result, the CCVA can take advantage of many recently developed fast computational algorithms developed for N-FINDR to derive their counterparts for CCVA. © Copyright 2016 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Personalized Quality-of-Service(Qo S) prediction is an indispensable technique to select suitable services for service-based cloud applications. Considering the dynamic nature of services, efficiently and accurately predicting Qo S value becomes an urgent and crucial research issue. In this paper, we propose an online personalized Qo S prediction approach for cloud service, namely online learning based matrix factorization(OLMF). We build the objective function of online matrix factorization and use stochastic gradient descent algorithm to solve the function. Extensive experiments are conducted on real world public datasets, which verify the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed approach.
