In simulation technology, computationally expensive objective functions are often replaced by cheap surrogates, which can be obtained by interpolation. Full grid interpolation methods suffer from the so-called curse o...

For many years discrete-event simulation has been used to analyze production and logistics problems in manufacturing and defense. In the early 1980s, visual interactive modelling environments were created that supported the development, experimentation and visualization of simulation models. Today these environments are termed commercial-off-the-shelf simulation packages (CSPs). With the advent of distributedsimulation and, later, the high level architecture, the possibility existed to link together these CSPs and their models to simulate larger problems within enterprises (e.g. multiple production lines) and across supply chains. However, the problem of standardizing the use of the HLA and its constituent parts in this domain exists. The solution of this problem is the work of the CSP interoperability product development group (CSPI PDG). The purpose of this paper is to introduce the CSPI PDG and to review the suite of standards proposed by the group and current progress

Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) simulation Packages (CSPs) are widely used to facilitate the creation of simulation models using some kind of visual interactive interface. CSPs have "evolved" over the years and are well used to support modeling demands in different market niches and domains. However, in terms of distributedsimulation, there is almost a complete lack of support for interoperability. The advent of the High Level Architecture (HLA) standard makes it possible to connect distributed model components together. The model components can be developed using specific CSPs best suited to the application area. In this paper, a CSP Emulator (CSPE) is proposed to investigate the interfaces between the CSPs and the HLA Runtime Infrastructure. In addition to support for standalone models as provided by current CSPs, the CSPE has some new features needed for building distributed models. An evaluation is conducted between CSPE and Simul8, one of the popular CSPs.

This article describes the results of one of the ten pilot programmes under the integrated manufacturing and service systems (IMSS) initiative pursued by the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A* STAR) in Singapore. The objective of this particular programme is to investigate how design, analysis, enhancement and implementation of critical business processes in a manufacturing and service network can be realised using one single simulation/application framework. The overall architecture of the framework outlines how commercial simulation packages and Web-service based business process application components would have to be connected through a commercial application framework to achieve maximum leverage and re-usability of the applications involved. In the pilot phase of this programme, research issues were also addressed with regard to mechanisms for interoperation between commercial simulation packages, symbiotic interaction between simulation-based decision support components and physical systems, and simulation speed-up through multi-objective optimal computing budget allocation techniques on a grid infrastructure.

This panel paper presents the views of six researchers and practitioners of simulation modeling. Collectively we attempt to address a range of key future challenges to modeling methodology. It is hoped that the views of this paper, and the presentations made by the panelists at the 2004 Winter simulation Conference will raise awareness and stimulate further discussion on the future of modeling methodology in areas such as modeling problems in business applications, human factors and geographically dispersed networks; rapid model development and maintenance; legacy modeling approaches; markup languages; virtual interactive process design and simulation; standards; and Grid computing.

This paper describes the implementation of transmission-line matrix (TLM) method algorithms on a massively parallel computer (DECmpp 12000), the technique of distributed computing in the UNIX environment, and the combination of TLM analysis with Prony's method as well as with autoregressive moving average (ARMA) digital signal processing for electromagnetic field modelling. By combining these advanced computation techniques, typical electromagnetic field modelling of microwave structures by TLM analysis can be accelerated by a few orders of magnitude.
