In this paper the authors present an overview of techniques and tools that enable the effective evaluation and refactoring of a Web application's conceptual schema. Moreover, based on the introduction of the notion of model clones (in a previous work), as partial conceptual schemas that are repeated within a broader application model and the notion of model smells, as certain blocks in the Web applications model that imply the possibility of refactoring, this paper illustrates a methodology and a tool for detecting and evaluating the existence of potential model clones, in order to identify problems in an application's conceptual schema by means of efficiency, consistency, usability and overall quality. The methodology can be deployed either in the process of designing an application or in the process of reengineering it. Evaluation is performed according to a number of inspection steps. At first level the compositions used in the hypertext design are evaluated, followed by a second level evaluation concerning data manipulation and presentation to the user.

This article presents a control framework to swing up and stabilize the inverted pendulum-cart system in its unstable equilibrium and maintain this configuration while changing the reference position of the cart. The swing-up problem is solved by an energy-based approach that respects physical constraints of the system. Stabilization and subsequent cart position tracking is addressed by means of an implicit model predictive controller with guaranteed stability imposed via a terminal set constraint. Viability of the proposed framework is practically demonstrated on a laboratory inverted pendulum system, the states of which were estimated by a continuous-discrete extended Kalman filter.

The process of continuous steel casting, specifically the part of secondary cooling, is a typical representative of a system with distributed parameters. The paper deal with the synthesis and simulation of robust control of continuous steel casting in the secondary cooling zone. During steel production, there is a smooth change between the types of steel produced (or steel grades), to which the control system must react flexibly. Therefore, a robust approach based on simple PID controllers will be chosen for control synthesis. Based on the model obtained from the ProCast software, the uncertainty limits for the simulation model will be determined. Robust control simulations will be performed on a time-space circuit, within the simulations a possible machine failure will be tested, thus a change in cooling power in individual zones. The results will be presented as temperature fields, representing the system with distributed parameters, taking into account the time and space distribution of the controlled temerature.

This article presents a prototype reference design for a low-cost miniature magnetic levitation experiment. The proposed device is built as an Arduino expansion module, thus may be installed on a broad range of microcontroller prototyping boards. The open-source hardware design uses off-the-shelf and widely available components and 3D printing technology, thus its overall material cost is minimal. This way, the magnetic levitation experiment is transformed into a pocket laboratory that can be borrowed by students for take-home experiments. In addition to the device itself, we present an open-source application programming interface and the outline of classroom examples in modeling, system identification and closed-loop control.

Recent developments in the area of industrial programing software expand the potential of the automation programs considerably. In addition to IEC 61131-3 languages, programming languages like C and C++ are getting available for industrial controllers, which opens new possibilities of reusing existing programs for real time processing in these controllers. Paper deals with swing-up and online model predictive control of mechatronic device - reaction wheel inverted pendulum. Swing-up control uses convenient shape of exponential function over pendulum position for determination of required energy to be delivered to the system. For stabilization of pendulum in the upright position a predictive controller based on optimal control law with perturbation was used. An important part of the solution is PLC implementation of qpOASES package for numerical solution of quadratic optimization problem. Application is implemented and tested using industrial PLC connected to a laboratory pendulum.

Commercial educational tools for teaching feedback concepts in control systems engineering and mechatronics are generally expensive, large, complex and sensitive instruments; therefore cannot be used for homework assignments outside the classroom. This paper presents a novel open-source teaching aid that can be readily manufactured under AC3 and as such, is financially accessible to students and universities operating on a tight budget. The device proposed in this paper implements a simple optical experiment, allowing students to follow a prescribed brightness level using feedback control concepts. In addition to real-time control, the apparatus is also suitable for teaching signal processing and system identification principles. The educational aid presented here is attached to the popular Arduino microcontroller prototyping platform in a form of a miniature extension shield, thereby using a standardized physical layout and software ecosystem. We describe the hardware, the application programming interface (API) and library written in C/C++ for the Arduino integrated development environment (IDE) and the accompanying Simulink toolbox; moreover present sample exercises for system identification and proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control.

This paper presents real-time control of a laboratory helicopter model with two degrees of freedom. To accomplish this goal we propose to employ a numerically robust approach to the synthesis of stabilizing model predictive control based on model prestabilization before the prediction phase. The underlying optimal control algorithm involves integral action, input constraints imposed by actuators, and guarantees closed-loop stability and recursive feasibility via a low-complexity terminal set constraint. Performance of the controller is practically demonstrated in the task of tracking a state reference corresponding to a predefined flight trajectory, and compared with linear quadratic control.
