In this paper, we present the development of a remote access control laboratory at RMIT university which allows users to perform experiments on real hardware through the internet. The web based system consists of an internal server linked to an xPC Target real time machine which communicates with a DC Motor control module via relevant DAQ interfaces. In this set up, we attempt to replace the expensive setup of IP camera or video server by a realistic virtual reality model. This enhances the experiment's flexibility and reduces the cost of implementation while providing more interactive visualization and reality feeling of the real system to the users. In addition, the software also features with multiple login database system allowing students to observe or perform experiments under supervision remotely from the admin server.

The estimation of parameters and states is one of the core data-processing algorithms used for the monitoring and control of continuum or structured mechatronical systems (e.g., flexible robotic arms and cantilevers). The measurements taken from the sensors combined with an appropriate model can filter the states and extract information about vibration dynamics parameters such as damping and spring constants. This paper presents a method based on the application of a Moving Horizon Observer (MHO) for state and parameter estimation of a lightly-damped vibrating system. A numerical experiment on a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system is performed to demonstrate the method on noisy measurements and to compare the MHO with the benchmark Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). Test scenarios show that the MHO appears to be more robust with respect to modeling errors.

A search for contact interactions has been performed using dimuon events recorded with the ATLAS detector in proton-proton collisions at s=7 TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 42 pb−1. No significant deviation from the standard model is observed in the dimuon mass spectrum, allowing the following 95% C.L. limits to be set on the energy scale of contact interactions: Λ>4.9 TeV (4.5 TeV) for constructive (destructive) interference in the left-left isoscalar compositeness model. These limits are the most stringent to date for μμqq contact interactions.

The paper presents the main ideas of two Leonardo da Vinci (LdV) projects focused on the vocational training. The selected outputs of these projects are presented in more details. The conception of the multilingual terminological dictionary and proposed graphical user interface is also presented in the paper. An example of practical exercises in the area of NGN protocols based on remote access to NGN Lab is described and illustrated.

Motion is one of the most important characteristics in clinical epileptology. In developing an integrated motion analysis system for epileptic patients or children with neurological disorders (e.g. ADHD) we surveyed and analyzed current efforts in vision-based human motion analysis in epilepsy as well as all possible forms of motion typically encountered in known epileptic syndromes. This paper presents the results in a systematic way, and includes a critical discussion of methodological and scientific challenges that need to be addressed in this particular domain. © 2010 IEEE.

The objective of the discrete-time modeling tools is twofold. First, they give an insight into the basic ideas of discrete-time modeling of dc-dc converters for university students and interested power electronics specialists. Second, as it is being presented below, the interactive calculation tools facilitate the fast and simple model-development in WEB browser after entering the basic circuit and load parameters. This feature can especially be useful for the practicing design engineers, since without long calculations with matrix functions the linearized discrete-time system model is immediately and automatically developed in both mathematical form (state-space equations and transfer functions in the Z domain) and also in graphical form (pole-zero map and bode plot). © 2010 IEEE.

The paper overviews a range of novel techniques recently developed for efficient detection and further analysis of data in visual databases.A particular attention is paid to the issue that,until recently,has been considered too complex and ill-defined,*** of unspecified similar fragments in images of unpredictable and unknown *** discuss the following techniques that can be instrumental in solving this problem:(1) detection of image fragments related by affine transformations;(2) detection of image fragments related topological mappings;(3) accurate shape estimate of detected similar image fragments and(4) automatic classification of fragments into classes of objects of similar visual *** paper presents the theoretical background and the implementation results. Additionally,a demo of a real-time system for detection of fragments similar to database images in a video stream will be presented during the conference.

Network Processors are used at the core of the Internet, providing routers, switches and other essential network devices with the necessary processing power to deliver proper data forwarding and other network related functions (VoIP, security, etc.) at the required level of performance. In this paper, we present a Network Processor architecture, designed to support all the fundamental instructions needed to deliver proper frame processing. It is designed and implemented on a specific FPGA board, employing Xilinx's Virtex-5, in order to allow for rapid deployment and usage. Apart from the architecture's description, performance measurements are provided that demonstrate the architecture's capabilities.
