The Global Cosmic-ray Observatory (GCOS) is a proposed large-scale observatory for studying ultra-high-energy cosmic particles, including ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs), photons, and neutrinos. Its primary goal is to characterise the properties of the highest-energy particles in Nature with unprecedented accuracy, and to identify their elusive sources. With an aperture at least a ten-fold larger than existing observatories, this next-generation facility should start operating after 2030, when present-day detectors will gradually cease their activities. Here we briefly review the scientific case motivating GCOS. We present the status of the project, preliminary ideas for its design, and some estimates of its capabilities. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

A test of CP invariance in Higgs boson production via vector-boson fusion has been performed in the H→γγ channel using 139 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at s=13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The optimal observable method is used to probe the CP structure of interactions between the Higgs boson and electroweak gauge bosons, as described by an effective field theory. No sign of CP violation is observed in the data. Constraints are set on the parameters describing the strength of the CP-odd component in the coupling between the Higgs boson and the electroweak gauge bosons in two effective field theory bases: d˜ in the HISZ basis and cHW˜ in the Warsaw basis. The results presented are the most stringent constraints on CP violation in the coupling between Higgs and weak bosons. The 95% C.L. constraint on d˜ is derived for the first time and the 95% C.L. constraint on cHW˜ has been improved by a factor of 5 compared to the previous measurement.

Higgs boson production via gluon-gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion in proton-proton collisions is measured in the H→WW*→eνμν decay channel. The Large Hadron Collider delivered proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV between 2015 and 2018, which were recorded by the ATLAS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. The total cross sections for Higgs boson production by gluon-gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion times the H→WW* branching ratio are measured to be 12.0±1.4 and 0.75 −0.16+0.19 pb, respectively, in agreement with the Standard Model predictions of 10.4±0.6 and 0.81±0.02 pb. Higgs boson production is further characterized through measurements of Simplified Template Cross Sections in a total of 11 kinematic fiducial regions.

This letter presents a measurement of the nuclear modification factor of large-radius jets in sNN=5.02 TeV Pb+Pb collisions by the ATLAS experiment. The measurement is performed using 1.72 nb−1 and 257 pb−1 of Pb+Pb and pp data, respectively. The large-radius jets are reconstructed with the anti-kt algorithm using a radius parameter of R=1.0, by reclustering anti-kt R=0.2 jets, and are measured over the transverse momentum (pT) kinematic range of 158

Rich dynamics and anticontrol of extinction in a prey-predator system

This paper reveals some new and rich dynamics of a two-dimensional prey-predator system and to anticontrol the extinction of one of the species. For a particular value of the bifurcation parameter, one of the system variable dynamics is going to extinct, while another remains chaotic. To prevent the extinction, a simple anticontrol algorithm is applied so that the system orbits can escape from the vanishing trap. As the bifurcation parameter increases, the system presents quasiperiodic, stable, chaotic and also hyperchaotic orbits. Some of the chaotic attractors are Kaplan-Yorke type, in the sense that the sum of its Lyapunov exponents is positive. Also, atypically for undriven discrete systems, it is numerically found that, for some small parameter ranges, the system seemingly presents strange nonchaotic attractors. It is shown both analytically and by numerical simulations that the original system and the anticontrolled system undergo several Neimark-Sacker bifurcations. Beside the classical numerical tools for analyzing chaotic systems, such as phase portraits, time series and power spectral density, the’0-1’ test is used to differentiate regular attractors from chaotic attractors. A search is presented for a heavy resonance Y decaying into a Standard Model Higgs boson H and a new particle X in a fully hadronic final state. The full Large Hadron Collider run 2 dataset of proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector from 2015 to 2018 is used and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. The search targets the high Y-mass region, where the H and X have a significant Lorentz boost in the laboratory frame. A novel application of anomaly detection is used to define a general signal region, where events are selected solely because of their incompatibility with a learned background-only model. It is constructed using a jet-level tagger for signal-model-independent selection of the boosted X particle, representing the first application of fully unsupervised machine learning to an ATLAS analysis. Two additional signal regions are implemented to target a benchmark X decay into two quarks, covering topologies where the X is reconstructed as either a single large-radius jet or two small-radius jets. The analysis selects Higgs boson decays into bb¯, and a dedicated neural-network-based tagger provides sensitivity to the boosted heavy-flavor topology. No significant excess of data over the expected background is observed, and the results are presented as upper limits on the production cross section σ(pp→Y→XH→qq¯bb¯) for signals with mY between 1.5 and 6 TeV and mX between 65 and 3000 GeV.

The measurement of the production of f0(980) in inelastic pp collisions at √s = 5.02 TeV is presented. This is the first reported measurement of inclusive f0(980) yield at LHC energies. The production is measured at midrapidity, |y| T 0(980) → π+π− hadronic decay channel using the ALICE detector. The pT-differential yields are compared to those of pions, protons and φ mesons as well as to predictions from the HERWIG 7.2 QCD-inspired Monte Carlo event generator and calculations from a coalescence model that uses the AMPT model as an input. The ratio of the pT-integrated yield of f0(980) relative to pions is compared to measurements in e+e−and pp collisions at lower energies and predictions from statistical hadronisation models and HERWIG 7.2. A mild collision energy dependence of the f0(980) to pion production is observed in pp collisions from SPS to LHC energies. All considered models underpredict the pT-integrated 2f0(980)/(π+ +π−) ratio. The prediction from the canonical statistical hadronisation model assuming a zero total strangeness content of f0(980) is consistent with the data within 1.9σ and is the closest to the data. The results provide an essential reference for future measurements of the particle yield and nuclear modification in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions, which have been proposed to be instrumental to probe the elusive nature and quark composition of the f0(980) scalar meson. © 2022, CC BY.

Measurement of the lifetime and Λ separation energy of 3ΛH

The most precise measurements to date of the 3ΛH lifetime τ and Λ separation energy BΛ are obtained using the data sample of Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV collected by ALICE at the LHC. The 3ΛH is reconstructed via its charged two-body mesonic decay channel (3ΛH → 3He + π− and the charge-conjugate process). The measured values τ = [253 ±11 (stat.) ±6 (syst.)] ps and BΛ = [102 ±63 (stat.) ±67 (syst.)] keV are compatible with predictions from effective field theories and confirm that the 3ΛH structure is consistent with a weakly-bound system. © 2022, CC BY.

This article presents the first measurement of the interaction between charm hadrons and nucleons. The two-particle momentum correlations of pD− and pD+ pairs are measured by the ALICE Collaboration in high-multiplicity pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV. The data are compatible with the Coulomb-only interaction hypothesis within (1.1-1.5)σ. The level of agreement slightly improves if an attractive nucleon(N)D strong interaction is considered, in contrast to most model predictions which suggest an overall repulsive interaction. This measurement allows for the first time an estimation of the 68% confidence level interval for the isospin I = 0 inverse scattering length of the ND state (Equation presented).
