For automotive manufacturers and tier-1 suppliers, the upcoming safety standard ISO 26262 results in new requirements for the development of embedded electronics and software. In particular, the variety of driver assistance systems that autonomously influence the driving dynamics of a vehicle may have a high risk potential and require development in accordance with the normative guidelines. But especially for those systems whose function is typically not based solely on hardware but on complex software algorithms, safety certification can be very complex or even impossible. In this paper the problems of development of vehicle systems according to ISO 26262 are described. Finally an approach for a safety-oriented reference architecture is presented that introduces adaptive software safety cages. This architecture enables application of formal verification methods. Supported by multisensor data fusion this allows to reduce safety requirements for vehicle control systems. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Hand Gesture is a popular way to interact or control machines and it has been implemented in many applications. The geometry of hand is such that it is hard to construct in virtual environment and control the joints but the functionality and DOF encourage researchers to make a hand like instrument. This paper presents a novel method for fingertips detection and centres of palms detection distinctly for both hands using MS KINECT in 3D from the input image. KINECT facilitates us by providing the depth information of foreground objects. The hands were segmented using the depth vector and centres of palms were detected using distance transformation on inverse image. This result would be used to feed the inputs to the robotic hands to emulate human hands operation. © 2011 IEEE.

Developing a non-invasive direct brain control of artificial limbs is both challenging and desirable. Such a sensory and control system, if successful, will have profound impact on the disabled. In this paper, we present the design of a control algorithm capable of automatic reconfiguration to account for changing sensor conditions, selection of an appropriate transfer function based on input characteristics, and adaptation to adjust output strength based on the user's activity. This algorithm is designed for use with our developed hybrid non-invasive brain monitoring technique for the purpose of artificial limb control. The development of the algorithm and its initial performance together with our sensory system are presented and discussed. © 2011 AACC American Automatic Control Council.

In this paper, after modeling and analyzing a single-sided wound secondary linear synchronous motor, single- and multi-objective design optimizations of the motor are carried out to develop larger average thrust and lower thrust ripple than the prototype by using design of experiments (DOE) and response surface methodology (RSM) considering multiple responses. By defining the motor weight as another objective function, it is tried to prevent an increase in motor size and reduce its material consumption. The optimization results confirm that desirable improvements in thrust mean, thrust ripple and motor weight are achieved. Finally, a finite element analysis is employed to evaluate the effectiveness of the employed machine models used in thrust and force ripple calculations and subsequently to confirm the proposed optimization method.

Groundwater is like dark matter - we know very little apart from the fact that it is hugely important. Given the scarcity of data, mathematical modelling can come to the rescue but existing groundwater models are mainly restricted to simulate the transport and degradation of contaminants on the scale of whole contaminated field sites by averaging out the effect of spatial heterogeneity on the availability of the pollutant to the degrading organisms. These coarse-scale mean-field models therefore tend to rely on fitting to data rather than being predictive. Also, they are less suited to incorporate spatial variability and non-linear kinetics and feedbacks. We propose to solve the two mutually exacerbating problems of environmental patchiness and data scarcity by developing a flexible and robust distributed simulation framework that uses an ensemble of small scale simulations running on different processors/computers to scale-up, i.e. to feed the effect of small-scale patchiness into a concurrent site-scale simulation of the dynamics of groundwater pollutant degradation. Our scaling approach solves problem #1 by simulating dynamics also on the small scale where some of the patchiness resides, and problem #2 by enabling rigorous validation of our small-scale model and scaling approach with laboratory data, which are high quality at low cost. © 2011 IEEE.

The future success of the smart Grid (SG) depends on many technological developments and innovations being created. The SG will be characterized by decentralized generation, improved network communications, demand response, greater reliability and robustness to failures. The future power grid will also have many interacting components needing greater capabilities to coordinate and manage power and information flows in as an efficient manner as possible. Though many power distribution engineering and analysis tools have been developed to operate the grid in a real-time manner, there are still areas requiring improved systems integration and decision-making. One such critical area that has great opportunity for improvement is at the interface between Distribution Management systems (DMS) operated by distribution utilities and Energy Management systems (EMS) operated by end consumers. This paper proposes the development of a set of technologies in the form of Decision-Guided Self-Architecting (DGSA) Framework whose purpose is to provide integrated, real-time optimal decision support in the common domain that intersects the operations of DMS and EMS. This is a key area requiring attention as the overall grid may be sub-optimized unless there is well-integrated and coordinated, optimal decision-making across the various power generating, distributing, and consuming entities of the SG. In addition, this paper also describes the supporting technologies upon which the framework is based and presents two key applications of the DGSA Framework: Energy Management systems and an Energy Investment Advisor. Also presented are two cases that each illustrate various scenarios for how the framework would be implemented and the type of decisions that would be made with such a framework. © 2011 IEEE.

The public health system is plagued by inefficient use of resources. Frequently, the results are lengthy patient treatment waiting times. While many solutions for patient scheduling in health systems exist, few address the problem of coordination between independent autonomous departments. In this study, we describe the use of a distributed dynamic constraint optimisation algorithm (Support Based Distributed Optimisation) for the generation and optimisation of schedules across autonomous units. We model the problem of scheduling radiotherapy patients across several independent oncology units as a dynamic distributed constraint optimisation problem. Such an approach minimises the sharing of private information such as department operation details as well as patient privacy information while taking into consideration patient preferences as well as resource utilisation to find a pareto-optimal solution. © 2011 ICST Institute for computer Science, Social Informatics and Telecommunications engineering.

We experimentally demonstrated an ultra-broadband supercontinuum source by using two low-cost multimode lasers, Erbium-Yerbium co-doped fiber and highly nonlinear fiber. The bandwidth of the generated broadband source is almost 1100nm, covering from 900 to 2000nm. In addition, the supercontinum source output is smooth and stable. © 2011 IEEE.

Mobile phones are becoming more and more ubiquitous with a large number of these devices having image/video capturing capabilities, connection capabilities and built-in rich sensory. This has encouraged the common user to capture more image/video content than ever before. However, this has created two interrelated problems: 1) while capturing some scene the user may want to get more information about it to make a decision (e.g. a buying one) without painful textual input on these mobile devices and while accounting for multiple meanings associated with a single image, as an image is worth a thousand words and 2) videos captured cannot be easily searched afterwards and hence forgotten due to the lack of proper indexing techniques. In this paper, we are presenting a system addressing the above two problems through a single solution by providing users with real-time automatically generated tags of their currently captured videos. The user can select/deselect from the automatic tags, thus tags can serve as visual query suggestions helping bridging the user's query intent. This same set of tags will be stored with the video for enabling easy content access afterwards.
