Channel compensation has been proved to be an effective approach for robust speech recognition. We first use two level cepstral mean substraction (CMS) for channel compensation in telephone speech recognition, and then propose a new channel compensation method, RMFCC. For all experiments, a Korean isolated 84 words database consisting of 80 speakers collected from a local telephone line is adopted. Using the RMFCC, a 39.8% reduction in word error rate is obtained relative to the conventional HMM system. It is shown from the experiments that the RMFCC, compared with RASTA, reduces the computational complexity without losing accuracy, and is also better than the CMS and two level CMS in performance.

The evaluation of contaminant concentrations in ground water and soil is an essential aspect of most hazardous waste remedial investigations. This paper describes methods applied toward obtaining, preserving, and analyzing subsurface samples for the determination of VOC concentrations in the saturated region of an unconfined coastal plain aquifer at Dover Air Force Base (DAFB), Delaware. The described protocol involved headspace-free subsampling of cores, field preservation of subsamples in methanol, and overnight extraction of the VOCs at elevated temperature (70 degrees C). Methanol-extracted compounds were subsequently transferred to hexane and analyzed by gas chromatography. The method was found to achieve quantitative extraction from the aquifer sands in a single step, although extraction from fine-grained and more strongly sorbing aquitard samples required multiple methanol extractions to achieve comparable recovery. An extensive set of DAFB results is presented as an indication of how these methods can be applied toward characterizing field-scale contamination with a high degree of resolution and accuracy. These data have enabled a quantitative estimate of the contaminant distribution at this site and offer valuable insight into processes of contaminant migration into the underlying aquitard. In these regards, the methods used are believed to have provided much more accurate results than could have been obtained using more commonly applied techniques.

The analysis of a combined multicarrier modulation/direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DSSS) modem carried out by Kondo and Milstein (see IEEE Trans. on Commun., 1995) in delay spread multipath is extended to include the effect of correlation between the DSSS subcarriers due to an exponential power delay profile. Analytical and simulation results show that additional diversity gain can be achieved with more subcarriers, but at the expense of multiple access capability. Eventually, an irreducible bit error probability (BEP) is approached as more subcarriers are used.

In this paper, we show the relevance of fuzzy systems in an integrated symbolic-subsymbolic architecture, GENUES (generic neuro-expert system), for information processing. Fuzzy logic is used for modelling knowledge in different phases of the GENUES architecture. The transportation of compressed video data without loss of picture quality requires the network to support large fluctuations in bandwidth requirements. These fluctuations can be smoothed, but straightforward approaches to smoothing can still suffer from excessive buffering requirements, poor buffer utilization and an excessive number of bandwidth changes. This paper introduces critical bandwidth allocation, which reduces the number of bandwidth changes to a very small number, and achieves the maximum effectiveness from client-side buffers. A comparison between critical bandwidth allocation algorithms and other smoothing algorithms is presented, the sensitivity of the algorithm to jitter is examined, and, implications for the design of network services are discussed.

An efficient method to retrieve necessary information from drawings for plant diagrams, logic circuit diagrams, etc. stored in a database is presented. In the image information retrieval systems currently in use, a keyword is assigned to each diagram and information is retrieved by the user by giving the keyword. When the features of the desired image are not registered as a keyword, however, its retrieval becomes difficult. In this paper a method is proposed in which the user shows features of the desired diagram using a sample diagram and a section similar to the sample diagram is retrieved. In this research, diagrams consisting mainly of symbols and connecting lines are considered. This kind of diagram is represented by a graph and similarities in topological features between the sample graph and graph representations of the diagrams in the database are evaluated. The retrieval is then performed based on the value obtained. The results of an experiment conducted using plant diagrams show that similar diagrams can be retrieved using this method.
