An important research challenge in Human Machine systems (HMS) is to create machines that are able to better understand human behavior so that the overall efficiency of the HMS can be enhanced through increased productivity and reduced safety risk. The research question posed in this paper is the following: Can an understanding of physiological behavior of humans be combined with statistical machine learning theory to develop predictive models that are able to accurately predict the cognitive difficulty experienced by humans? In this paper, we answer this question in the affirmative by demonstrating the use of two physiological measurements, pupil dilation and eye-gaze patterns, as indices of cognitive workload. Specifically, we demonstrate the possibility of cognitive context detection through machine learning and classification using eye-tracking data from NRL's Supervisory Control Operations User Testbed (SCOUT™), a flexible simulation environment that represents the tasks that a future UAS operator would engage in, while controlling multiple UAS. In this paper, we provide a high level overview of Spam 2.0, how it works, its impacts and its categorizations (which are annoying, tricky, deceiving and evil). We also describe the existing approaches taken to combat Spam 2.0, including the detection approach, the prevention approach, and the early detection approach. Three techniques based on the detection approach presented in this paper include: content based, metadata based and user flagging based. We also explore several open issues/problems in this area. These include problems regarding tools and technologies, awareness and responsibility, and spam and spammers. Issues discussed regarding awareness and responsibility are users' lack of awareness, governments' inaction in tackling Spam 2.0, companies' apathy in combating it, lack of collaboration between countries, and unclear accountabilities in this regard. The paper also identifies future trends for both antispammers and spammers. Anti-spammers will likely focus their efforts more on behaviour based techniques and produce more language independent tools. Implementation of dynamic forms and forcing every user to actually go through the registration form will be good ways to control spam. From a monetary perspective, estimating intangible costs associated with Spam 2.0 will help raise the awareness of public users regarding spamming. On the other hand, the spammers will predictably continue to find methods to decrease the filters' efficiency by imitating real users' behaviours and finding other spamming opportunities. The transition towards renewable energies is inevitable in the face of global warming conditions and the increasing scarcity of fossil fuels, alongside their harmful impacts on the environment. Solar power, considered as a clean and its availability energy source, plays a vital role in this matter. However, due to the unpredictability nature of solar, influenced by environmental and temporal factors, energy production has faced significant challenges for its integration into microgrids. The present study works on addressing these obstacles by implementing advanced machine learning techniques to empower the predictability of solar energy. Utilizing one-month datasets of two power plants in India, Gandikota, Andhra, and Nasik, Maharashtra. This work focuses on various predictive models, including Support Vector Regression (SVR), Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost)m K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), and Random Forest. These models are evaluated under different conditions, like incorporating lagged steps, and dynamics capturing. For the evaluation, a range of metrics is used. Mean Squared Log Error (MSLE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Mean Percentage Error (MPE), and R 2 , for the identification of the most effective algorithm are used. The final goal of this work is not only to improve the forecasting accuracy of solar power generation, by advantageous model modification but also to contribute to the efficient management and optimization of renewable energy integrations. Overall, XGBoost emerges as the preferred method for forecasting, offering a balance of high accuracy and robustness across different forecasting scenarios.

This paper executes a comparative analysis between alternative-pole flux-switching and inter-modular biased-flux permanent magnet (PM) motors. Despite their close structural similarities, the former puts magnets not only between stator modules, but also close to the armature windings. However, the inter-modular PM (IMPM) motor only occupies spaces between stator modules. This type of occupation allows this structure to provide a safe operation point for PMs. Not considering the PM's recoil-phenomenon, the torque density of the IMPM motor is not as significant as the alternative-pole flux-switching PM (AP-FSPM) motor. This is because of the four-operating mode of the AP-FSPM structure which enables it to increase the torque density by utilizing the PMs in every moment of the operation. But, when the demagnetization of the AP-FSPM's PMs is taken into account, the torque density and torque per PM values of the AP-FSPM structure plummets. A complete full-load demagnetization analysis is done in order to get a better understanding of how the performance of the IMPM structure supersedes the AP-FSPM structure. 2D finite element analysis is used to extract the most important indexes of both topologies. © 2023 IEEE.

Fog computing-based radio access networks (F-RANs) aim to extend the computing and storage facilities of the centralized cloud radio access networks (C-RANs) to the network edge. Compared with the centralized baseband unit pool in the C-RAN, F-RAN reduces the burden on fronthaul. Thus, the F-RAN is foreseen as a viable solution towards ultra-low latency service provisioning. However, due to limited computing and storage facilities in fog computing-enabled access points (F-APs), some tasks that cannot be executed on the primary F-APs are transferred to other F-APs. In worst-case, the tasks are sent to the resource-enriched centralized cloud for processing. The transmission latency between F-APs, F-AP-to-end- user, and fronthaul latency strongly depends on interference power from the undesired network element as well as end-users. At the same time, the computational latency increases with the queuing delay. In this paper, we propose a load balancing scheme to address the tradeoff between transmission and computing latencies in F- RANs. Finally, the extensive simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the greedy approach to meet the critical requirements, such as low-latency and minimal task offloading to the cloud in the F-RAN for the low-latency communications. © 2018 IEEE.

This paper presents a novel 'physics-based' technique for numerically modeling of multi-scale problems, e.g., antennas with metasurfaces operating at mm wavelengths. The metasurface is replaced by an Equivalent Dielectric (ED) medium, whose use in the numerical simulation significantly reduces the computational resources required to model the problem. Furthermore, the proposed method is accurate and does not need sophisticated new code development but can be used in the existing commercially available software instead. © 2021 URSI.

Dynamic space warping (DSW) has emerged as a very effective algorithm for matching shapes. However, a central computational difficulty associated with DSW arises when a boundary's starting point (or rotation angle) is unknown. In this paper, the HopDSW algorithm is proposed to speed up the starting point computation. Rather than performing an exhaustive search for the correct starting point as in classical approaches, the proposed algorithm operates in a coarse-tonne manner. The coarse search is global and uses a hopping step to exclude points from the search. Then, the search is refined in the neighborhood of the solution of the coarse search. A criterion that governs selecting the hopping step parameter is given, which reduces the number of starting point computations by an order. For shape representation, triangle area signature (TAS) is computed from triangles formed by the boundary points. Experimental results on the MPEG-7 CE-1 database of 1400 shapes show that the proposed algorithm returns the solution of the exhaustive search with a high degree of accuracy and a considerable reduction in the number of computations.

This paper studies the dielectric properties of commercially available milk products of varying butterfat 0.1-3.25% in the low spectrum 1-10 GHz using an open-ended coaxial probe kit. Extracted properties have indicated an appreciably dielectric contrast between tested milks with a negative linear relationship between the dispersive complex permittivity and the fat content. A resonant sensor was developed to operate in one sensitive region to allow for non-invasive milk fat detection by monitoring changes in the resonance profile of the transmission coefficient S21. © 2022 IEEE.
