In this paper, a sophisticated configuration for symmetric multilevel voltage source inverters is proposed. In multilevel inverters, the costs, circuit size so installation space, complexness of control scheme and reliability are directly depended to the amount of circuit devices required. The provided comparison study among proposed inverter, CHB and recently introduced converters, validates that the proposed inverter reduces the requirements for circuit devices, including power semi-conductor switches, IGBTs, diodes, gate driver circuits and DC voltage sources. The given simulation results confirms the feasibleness of the projected modular structure. Also, to approve the practicality of the proposed inverter, a prototype of the proposed topology has been implemented. Finally simulation and experimental results are compared with one another and therefore the provided comparison shows that the obtained results are in sensible agreements.

Multi-channel media access control (MAC) is important in wireless sensor networks because it allows parallel data transmissions and resists external wireless interference. Existing multi-channel MAC protocols, however, do not efficiently support delay-sensitive applications that require reliable and timely data transmissions. In addition, multi-channel operation is inherently deficient for supporting multi-hop broadcasting, due to independent waking-up schedules on sensors. To address these issues, we present a routing-enhanced multi-channel MAC (RM-MAC) which allows nodes to coordinately select their channel polling times based on cross-layer routing information. RM-MAC also supports a ripple broadcast mechanism which achieves efficient multi-hop broadcast among sensors. Simulation results show that RM-MAC provides significant improvement over the MuCHMAC [1], in terms of end-to-end delay, under a wide range of traffic loads including both unicast and broadcast traffic.

Increase in the market share of wind energy in total electricity generation and its impact to power grid has imposed new challenges to the stability of each wind turbine generator (WTG) unit. In the case of power undersupply, the problem on voltage stability and voltage collapse will eventually occur. In this paper, the impact of reactive power control in improving the performance of squirrel cage induction generator-based (SCIG-based) WTGs is presented. In the asynchronous operation of induction machine, the increment of wind power generation is feasible by absorption of more reactive power. Increasing the reactive power consumption of induction generator results in reduction of voltage in the bus connected to the wind farm from the grid. In this scenario, inadequate reactive power control can lead to instability in the power network. The studies conducted in this paper are based on the quasi-static time-domain simulations (QSTDS) and continuation power flow (CPF) algorithm framework. The results obtained indicate that with increment of wind power penetration in a power system, adequate reactive power support is required to maintain stability, else the stable performance of the wind farm will be threatened and will lead to over-speeding of SCIGs. The use of SVC and STATCOM as a practical solution in improvement of wind farms-based power system stability is investigated and presented.

In practice, multiple types of distortions are associated with an image quality degradation process. The existing machine learning (ML) based image quality assessment (IQA) approaches generally established a unified model for all distortion types, or each model is trained independently for each distortion type by using single-task learning, which lead to the poor generalization ability of the models as applied to practical image processing. There are often the underlying cross relatedness amongst these single-task learnings in IQA, which is ignored by the previous approaches. To solve this problem, we propose a multi-task learning framework to train IQA models simultaneously across individual tasks each of which concerns one distortion type. These relatedness can be therefore exploited to improve the generalization ability of IQA models from single-task learning. In addition, pairwise image quality rank instead of image quality rating is optimized in learning task. By mapping image quality rank to image quality rating, a novel no-reference (NR) IQA approach can be derived. The experimental results confirm that the proposed Multi-task Rank Learning based IQA (MRLIQ) approach is prominent among all state-of-the-art NR-IQA approaches. © 2015 IEEE.

The Icefin vehicle is a novel, custom under-ice unmanned underwater vehicle. This vehicle was designed for polar sub-ice deployment and was deployed to McMurdo, Antarctica in November of 2014. An overview of the unique vehicle design is presented here, along with a summary of the deployment testing in Antarctica. Lessons learned from this deployment provided an opportunity for design improvements to the vehicle. An updated vehicle design is presented including the changes resulting from polar sub-ice field testing.

With rise in energy costs, operational costs for managing cloud infrastructures are also increasing. This is an opportunity to present an energy-aware recommendation system for cloud platforms. This paper presents one such system that implements a pure software approach for generating energy efficient recommendations for cloud infrastructures. This system performs offline profiling of cloud nodes to generate energyaware profiles which are later matched with runtime usage feed. According to the real-time data, energy efficient profile is matched and provided to provisioning for implementation;consequently, achieving an energy efficient cloud platform. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2015.

In this paper, the hybrid implicit-explicit finite-difference time-domain (HIE-FDTD) method is proposed for efficient simulation of graphene-based absorbers at THz;there the graphene model is incorporated into the numerical methods with auxiliary differential equation (ADE) technique for solving the Maxwell's equations. Numerical simulations show that the absorption peaks of the absorbers can be tuned effectively by varying the chemical potential or layer number of the fewlayered graphene sheets.

Mutation analysis is a testing strategy that consists of using supporting tools to seed artificial faults in the original code of a software under test, generating faulty programs (“mutants”) that are supposed to produce incorrect outputs. Novice programmers suffer of a wide range of deficits due to defective training processes. We argue that the incorporation of experiences on mutation testing in programming courses adds valuable knowledge to the learning process. In this paper we evaluate the effects of using mutation testing to improve the learning process of students in programming courses. We present results of experiments and analysis involving undergraduate students. These experiments are the continuation of a previous work in which we raise empirical evidences that the adequate incorporation of mutation testing in programming courses contributes to form an effective environment that fosters learning. To do so, we provide a mutation testing tool to promote the practice of mutation testing by novice programmers. Through practical experiences and several analysis survey we measured the effects of using the mutation testing criterion to teach programming. In addition, we collected the opinion of senior students who already knew mutation testing concepts about their opinion on the usage of mutation concepts to teach novice programmers. Our findings reveal that the effective use of mutation analysis concepts contributes to the learning process, making students see the code as a product under development that is the result of a careful manual coding process which they need for measuring and predicting the effect of each command. The main contributions discussed in this paper are: (1) presenting results of an empirical analysis involving undergraduate students, thus giving us preliminary evidence on the effects of the novel practice; (2) exposing possible practices to explore mutation testing in programming classes, highlighting the limitations and strengths of such
