An integrated array of parallel-plate resonators for microfluidic sensing is proposed. The numerical method used for the analysis of this array and the related design procedure are described. It is demonstrated that the array can be designed to show a high quality factor. Moreover, sensitivity of the proposed sensor is higher than 200 GHz/RIU for a wide range of refractive indices. The proposed sensor lends itself to real-time flow monitoring applications where high sensitivity is required. © 2014 IEEE.

In recent years the Mission Design Center (MDC) at NASA Ames research Center has been studying mission concepts involving clusters of small spacecraft capable of providing cost-effective solutions in orbit compared to space missions involving only a single larger spacecraft. Low-cost networks of small spacecraft can be a viable alternative to large budget Earth observation or space exploration missions producing significant scientific return for often moderate development efforts and short lead times. This paper is the first in a series of 3 companion papers in which we make the point that the scientific value (and hence the cost effectiveness) of small multi-spacecraft missions can be further increased if the network of spacecraft is allowed to be heterogeneous. We define Heterogeneous Spacecraft Networks (HSNs) to be networks of spacecraft having different operators or originating from different missions that are able to communicate with each other in a low-cost manner and with low impact on overall system resources. HSN incorporates both the space segment and ground segment for an end-to-end solution. In this contribution we illustrate the strength of the HSN approach by presenting a general concept for a HSN in LEO as well as a case study showcasing the value of such a network. In particular, we present a case study where we examine the feasibility of a low-cost, multi-institutional network of small spacecraft acting as a next-generation Earth Observation (EO) platform and focusing on ad-hoc data relay to maximize throughput. In the simulation we show that the downlink throughput of an HSN can be larger by an order of magnitude compared to the conventional scenario where no networking capability exists. The neural mechanisms of music listening and appreciation are not yet completely understood. Based on the apparent relationship between the beats per minute (tempo) of music and the desire to move (for example feet tapping) induced while listening to that music it is hypothesised that musical tempo may evoke movement related activity in the brain. Participants are instructed to listen, without moving, to a large range of musical pieces spanning a range of styles and tempos during an electroencephalogram (EEG) experiment. Event-related desynchronisation (ERD) in the EEG is observed to correlate significantly with the variance of the tempo of the musical stimuli. This suggests that the dynamics of the beat of the music may induce movement related brain activity in the motor cortex. Furthermore, significant correlations are observed between EEG activity in the alpha band over the motor cortex and the bandpower of the music in the same frequency band over time. This relationship is observed to correlate with the strength of the ERD, suggesting entrainment of motor cortical activity relates to increased ERD strength.

The development of a nonlinear adaptive controller with reconfiguration capabilities for a generic 6-DOF model of an air-breathing hypersonic vehicle is considered in this paper. The proposed controller is endowed with a modular structure (comprised of an inner-loop adaptive attitude controller, a robust nonlinear outer-loop controller and a dynamic control allocation scheme) that avoids the complexity typical of solutions based on adaptive back-stepping. An observer-based algorithm achieves decoupling between adaptation and constrained actuator dynamics. A case study is presented to illustrate the capability of the proposed methodology to deal with the simultaneous occurrence of significant model uncertainty and actuator faults. © 2014 American Automatic Control Council.

This paper discusses energy management and control algorithms of microgrid with energy storage. Specific management framework within microgrid presented here includes: a) help prioritizing the renewable energy sources (RES) to provide power to local loads, b) manage battery to avoid deep-discharging and overcharging, c) maintain dc link voltage at a specified value, and d) regulate ac voltage buses at nominal voltage and frequency. The system analyzed here is adopted from Consortium for Electric Reliability Technology Solutions (CERTS) microgrid test bed. While the generation priority is from RES, the system also has a thermal generation unit to compensate for renewable energy variability and intermittency. Depending on battery state of charge (SOC) and power difference between photovoltaic (PV) and the load, the energy management can work with several modes: charging, discharging, export power, import power, and halt. The system is simulated in PSCAD platform and shows that energy management and control algorithms work as expected.

In this paper, an algorithm for hard and soft data fusion is developed for tracking moving objects using hard data from sensors on autonomous agents and soft data from human observations. Two main challenges are identified and addressed in this paper: 1. how to model the human observation, 2. how to estimate state using soft data and fuse it with the state estimates from the sensors on autonomous agents (e.g., a camera sensor). A novel approach is developed to model perceived human observations to the real physical states using artificial neural networks (ANN). A particle filter (PF) is used to estimate a moving target's state based on range and bearing observation data from a human observer and an EKF is used to estimate the target state using on-board camera sensor. The range measurement is represented using Kumaraswamy's double bounded distribution. The state estimates computed based on a model of human observation learned by an ANN are fused with the state estimates from the on-board sensors using a fast covariance intersection (CI) algorithm. The CI algorithm yields consistent fused estimates in the absence of unknown correlations between state estimates obtained using human measurements and robot sensor measurements. The performance of the developed algorithms is validated on a target tracking simulation platform.

In Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM)-based mobile networks (e.g., Long Term Evolution Advanced), Downlink Control Information (DCI) in a Physical Downlink Control Channel (PDCCH) plays a unique role in carrying control signaling and scheduling information, which enables the flexibility and diversity of radio resource utilization. Due to system configuration limitations, power dimension is the only potential to enhance DCI reliability. Based on this motivation, we apply the synergy concept to power dimension: called Power Synergy, which can deal with negative effects caused by Cell-specific Reference Signal (CRS) power boosting, and also allow flexibly power lending between OFDM symbols in the physical control region. Under the constraints of the Block Error Rate (BLER) threshold 10~(-2) given for PDCCHs and the CRS full-cell coverage requirement, performance tests reveal there are significant profits (for example, 10-dB gain available for enhancing DCI reliability in the worst case) from the power headroom in the physical control region. This valuable gain is helpful to accommodate emerging mobile broadband services (e.g., mobile health) in LTE/LTE-A networks.

In this paper we present the experimental work on object detection in the smartphone visible light communications (SVLC) system. In SVLC, the smartphone emits encoded images using its panel light under different conditions (link range and angles) and the transmitted data is captured by a receiving phone. The captured image is processed using the Speeded Up Robust Features (SURF) technique, which enables the frame detection and subsequently bit stream recovery. The success rate of the bit stream transmission is measured for the above test conditions. The obtained results show that 93% of successful data recovery is achieved under the normal user's working environment. In addition tests carried out also show the possibility of fast data rate communications. © 2014 IEEE.

Excessive power consumption and high temperatures are some of the key factors limiting battery charge life and performance of current mobile devices or smartphones. Existing power management solutions do not account for user-experience, which can impact user satisfaction. In this paper we propose a joint power and thermal management solution, which takes a proactive approach in reducing energy consumption while providing expected user-experience. The proposed technique modulates the operating conditions based on users application preferences and exploits the “change blindness” effect to reduce display power consumption. Another important aspect of our implementation is that it does not require any restructuring of the underlying operating system. A novel thermal model of the entire smartphone was built with the purpose of monitoring and controlling the operating conditions to keep the device temperatures within safe operating ranges. Our ready-to-use management technique has been implemented on Google Nexus 5 and has been demonstrated to achieve a 46% application-specific savings on power consumption and up to 35% savings in power consumption at the device level. The mean temperature estimation error is 1.17°C.
