Cascade adaptive control of uncertain unified chaotic systems

The chaos control of uncertain unified chaotic systems is considered. Cascade adaptive control approach with only one control input is presented to stabilize states of the uncertain unified chaotic system at the zero equilibrium point. Since an adaptive controller based on dynamic compensation mechanism is employed, the exact model of the unified chaotic system is not necessarily required. By choosing appropriate controller parameters, chaotic phenomenon can be suppressed and the response speed is tunable. Sufficient condition for the asymptotic stability of the approach is derived. Numerical simulation results confirm that the cascade adaptive control approach with only one control signal is valid in chaos control of uncertain unified chaotic systems.

The control of Multi-tank Liquid-level System is both a typical multivariable control problem and a typical problem that is used to verify conception and method of multivariable control. In this paper, a decoupling controller matrix is designed based on the complete decoupling method of feedforward compensation. For the decoupled objective function, the parameters of PI controller are tuned using Desired Dynamic Equation (DDE) method. The method is applied in simulations of several typical four-tank models. And robustness analysis is carried out using the Monte-Carlo stochastic experiment. The simulation results show that the method can achieve a significant decoupling among the responses of system outputs, an effective control of water level of each loop and an obvious improvement of control performance of multivariable interconnected systems.

Testing smart grid information and communication (ICT) infrastructures is imperative to ensure that they meet industry requirements and standards and do not compromise the grid reliability. Within the micro-grid, this requires identifying and testing ICT infrastructures for communication between distributed energy resources, building, substations, etc. To evaluate various ICT infrastructures for micro-grid deployment, this work introduces the Virtual Micro-Grid laboratory (VMGL) and provides a preliminary analysis of Long-Term Evolution (LTE) as a micro-grid communication infrastructure.

In this paper, after modeling and analyzing a single-sided wound secondary linear synchronous motor, single- and multi-objective design optimizations of the motor are carried out to develop larger average thrust and lower thrust ripple than the prototype by using design of experiments (DOE) and response surface methodology (RSM) considering multiple responses. By defining the motor weight as another objective function, it is tried to prevent an increase in motor size and reduce its material consumption. The optimization results confirm that desirable improvements in thrust mean, thrust ripple and motor weight are achieved. Finally, a finite element analysis is employed to evaluate the effectiveness of the employed machine models used in thrust and force ripple calculations and subsequently to confirm the proposed optimization method. © 2011 IEEE.

Healthcare Interchange Exchange (HIE) is set of healthcare entities that link regions and nations around the world to share healthcare information about patients. HIE provides a unified interface to various stakeholders to access patient data. For example, individuals want to access personal data, practitioners want to import their patient data from Personal Health Records (PHR) and researchers want to access anonymized patient data for research purposes with ensured individual privacy. Keeping in view requirements of various stakeholders it is challenging to design an HIE system that ensures the security and privacy of patient information, such that the health records remain interoperable and scalable. This paper proposes, an HIE framework that will provide secure access to patient data and adhere to the interoperability rules. Implementation of l-diversity algorithm ensures individual privacy especially when the data is made available publicly for statistical analysis. © 2011 IEEE.

Object instance matching is a cornerstone component in many computer vision applications such as image search, augmented reality and unsupervised tagging. The common flow in these applications is to take an input image and match it against a database of previously enrolled images of objects of interest. This is usually difficult as one needs to capture an image corresponding to an object view already present in the database, especially in the case of 3D objects with high curvature where light reflection, viewpoint change and partial occlusion can significantly alter the appearance of the captured image. Rather than relying on having numerous views of each object in the database, we propose an alternative method of capturing a short video sequence scanning a certain object and utilize information from multiple frames to improve the chance of a successful match in the database. The matching step combines local features from a number of frames and incrementally forms a point cloud describing the object. We conduct experiments on a database of different object types showing promising matching results on both a privately collected set of videos and those freely available on the Web such that on YouTube. Increase in accuracy of up to 20% over the baseline of using a single frame matching is shown to be possible. © 2010 IEEE.

While clinical measures of mobility and balance are important for tracking disease progression in the elderly, most of these tools are based on what can be observed by the human eye, and many do not assess bedridden patients. This paper examines the potential for pressure sensitive mats to be used in conjunction with data processing to develop a system that automates a clinical tool used to assess balance and mobility in the elderly. A study was conducted in which pressure data were gathered while 30 non-patient volunteers performed partial in-bed clinical assessments. Data were then analyzed by grouping sensor data, calculating ratios, then extracting features from the analyzed signals. Pressure ratio signals representing each part of the simulated assessment, were consistent among volunteers and were visually and numerically distinguishable from another. These results indicate that the movement specific pressure signal features identified here are quantifiable and that algorithms may be written to identify and distinguish between certain movements and output the correct clinical assessment. © 2012 IEEE.

Today, wireless sensor networks encompass a large volume of applications. Wireless sensor networks consisted of many nodes by low energy batteries. Therefore, they must consume power as low as possible. TDMA Protocol in these networks is designed for this goal. In this paper a multiobjective immune algorithm is proposed for finding optimal solutions to TDMA scheduling problem. The simulation results show a better performance in comparison to two algorithms using instances with different sizes.
