cyber-physical systems (CPS) use logical computation informed by measurements of the environment to actuate changes on the physical world. These systems have significant impact on people, and must be designed for resilience against fault and attack. However, due to their large scale, assurance of CPS trustworthiness is better suited to modeling and simulation than deployment of a real system. This paper describes an approach to integrate a network simulator with the High Level Architecture (HLA) to investigate the effects of different network conditions on CPS performance. Using this approach, an HLA interaction class can be configured to use network simulation rather than the default reliable HLA delivery mechanism. A technique similar to regions defined in HLA data distribution management is used to allow each federate to receive the same interactions at different logical time steps, as simulated by the network simulator. This is implemented in a piece of reusable code shared by federates that sits between the runtime infrastructure (RTI) and application code. The implementation can be used to create a test harness around the federates that represent the operation of a CPS to validate its behavior under unreliable network conditions. © 2020 Simulation Innovation Workshop.

A co-simulation may comprise several heterogeneous federates with diverse spatial and temporal execution characteristics. In an iterative time-stepped simulation, a federation exhibits the Bulk Synchronous Parallel (BSP) computation paradigm in which all federates perform local operations and synchronize with their peers before proceeding to the next round of computation. In this context, the lowest performing (i.e., slowest) federate dictates the progression of the federation logical time. One challenge in co-simulation is performance profiling for individual federates and entire federations. The computational resource assignment to the federates can have a large impact on federation performance. Furthermore, a federation may comprise federates located on different physical machines as is the case for cloud and edge computing environments. As such, distributed profiling and resource assignment to the federation is a major challenge for operationalizing the co-simulation execution at scale. This paper presents the Execution Performance Profiling and Optimization (EXPPO) methodology, which addresses these challenges by using execution performance profiling at each simulation execution step and for every federate in a federation. EXPPO uses profiling to learn performance models for each federate, and uses these models in its federation resource recommendation tool to solve an optimization problem that improves the execution performance of the co-simulation. Using an experimental testbed, the efficacy of EXPPO is validated to show the benefits of performance profiling and resource assignment in improving the execution runtimes of co-simulations while also minimizing the execution cost.

The Internet of Things (IoT) promises to connect and manage an unprecedented number of heterogeneous devices that are not designed to interoperate as a system. Modeling and Simulation of IoT will face new challenges in the representation of this scale because an accurate model must consider the characteristics of each unique IoT device in the system. In addition, hardware-in-the-loop simulation of IoT will produce massive quantities of information that can overwhelm the processing power of the low-power devices often deployed in these systems. This paper introduces a new infrastructural component called a Forwarder to the Portico implementation of the High-Level Architecture (HLA). It transforms the flat structure of HLA into a hierarchical structure where federates are partitioned into different clusters that communicate through their respective Forwarders. A Forwarder acts as both a data router between the different clusters in the federation, and a firewall that limits the amount of information that traverses the boundaries of its local cluster. Using this approach, Portico now has a scalable architecture suited to IoT that simulates a federation of hierarchical federations. A novel aspect of the Forwarder design is that the scalability of HLA traffic flow is amplified by the inherent function of traditional Internet Switch fabric technology. This technology resulted from a collaboration between the United States National Institute of Standards and Technology and Portico's core development team at Calytrix Technologies. The new Portico 2.2.0 will be used in the Universal CPS Environment for Federation (UCEF) and in other projects worldwide. © 2018 Fall Simulation Innovation Workshop: Leveraging the Power of Simulation, SIW 2018. Cities and communities around the world are increasingly deploying advanced technologies such as Internet of Things and cyber-physical systems for improved efficiency, convenience, safety, and quality of life. The Global City Teams Challenge (GCTC) program, led by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, has successfully nurtured hundreds of projects led by municipal governments and technology providers with the goal of helping build smart infrastructure through advanced technologies. However, security and privacy for smart city solutions have not been generally considered a top priority by the smart city community. To address this issue, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Science and Technology Directorate has joined forces with NIST in the 2018 round of GCTC to encourage smart cities and communities to embrace security and privacy as a primary concern. © 2018 IEEE.

Increased availability of low-cost water level sensors communicating through the Internet of Things (IoT) has expanded the horizons of publicly-ingestible data streams available to modern smart cities. StormSense is an IoT-enabled inundation forecasting research initiative and an active participant in the Global City Teams Challenge seeking to enhance flood preparedness in the smart cities of Hampton Roads, VA for flooding resulting from storm surge, rain, and tides. In this study, we present the a blueprint and series of applicable protocols through the use of the new StormSense water level sensors to help establish a regional resilience monitoring network. In furtherance of this effort, the Virginia Commonwealth Center for Recurrent Flooding Resiliency's Tidewatch tidal forecast system is being used as a starting point to integrate the extant (NOAA) and new (USGS and StormSense) water level sensors throughout the region, and demonstrate replicability of the solution across the cities of Newport News, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach within Hampton Roads, VA. StormSense's network employs a mix of ultrasonic sonar and radar remote sensing technologies to record water levels and develop autonomous alert messaging systems through the use of three separate cloud environments. One to manage the water level monitoring sensors and alert messaging, one to run the model and interface with the post-processed results, and one to geospatially present the flood results. © 2018 IEEE.

Robust safety for autonomous vehicles through reconfigurable networking

Autonomous vehicles bring the promise of enhancing the consumer’s experience in terms of comfort and convenience and, in particular, the safety of the autonomous vehicle. Safety functions in autonomous vehicles such as Automatic Emergency Braking and Lane Centering Assist rely on computation, information sharing, and the timely actuation of the safety functions. One opportunity to achieve robust autonomous vehicle safety is by enhancing the robustness of in-vehicle networking architectures that support built-in resiliency mechanisms. Software Defined Networking (SDN) is an advanced networking paradigm that allows fine-grained manipulation of routing tables and routing engines and the implementation of complex features such as failover, which is a mechanism of protecting in-vehicle networks from failure, and in which a standby link automatically takes over once the main link fails. In this paper, we leverage SDN network programmability features to enable resiliency in the autonomous vehicle realm. We demonstrate that a Software Defined In-Vehicle Networking (SDIVN) does not add overhead compared to Legacy In-Vehicle Networks (LIVNs) under non-failure conditions and we highlight its superiority in the case of a link failure and its timely delivery of messages. We verify the proposed architectures benefits using a simulation environment that we have developed and we validate our design choices through testing and simulations. Copyright © 2018, The Authors.
