We consider the task of finding frequent parallel episodes in parallel point processes (or event sequences), allowing for imprecise synchrony of the events constituting occurrences (temporal imprecision) as well as incomplete occurrences (selective participation). The temporal imprecision problem is tackled by frequent pattern mining using a graded notion of synchrony that captures both the number of instances of a pattern as well as the precision of synchrony of its events. To cope with selective participation, a reduction sequence of items (or event types) is formed based on found frequent patterns and guided by pattern overlap. We evaluate the performance of this method on a large number of data sets with injected parallel episodes. We demonstrate that, in contrast to binary synchrony where it pays to consider the pattern instances, graded synchrony performs better with a pattern-based scheme than with an instance-based one, thus simplifying the procedure.

In [7] Fredricks et al. showed that certain Iterated Function Systems (IFS) can be used to construct copulas with fractal support. Since, firstly, the same construction also works with respect to the D 1-metric on the space of copulas which is much stronger than the uniform metric and, secondly, the star product of copulas is (jointly) continuous with respect to this metric the IFS approach can also be used to construct idempotent copulas with fractal support. The main result of the paper is that for each open interval Iisin[1,2] there exists an idempotent copula A such that the Hausdorff dimension of the support of A is contained in the interval I. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

This paper addresses the shortest path problem in a fuzzy directed graph. Unlike the previous approaches, the proposed approach can be applied for networks which may consist of cycles and parallel arcs that each arc length is defined by a fuzzy number. It should be noted that the crisp shortest path problem has already been solved however in many real world applications the exact value of arcs is not clear and hence there is a need to model uncertainty. A fuzzy set, "traffic-free", is defined in order to define arcs membership function values. The approach seeks for a minimal path that meets the designed traffic ratio. In order to formulate the problem, credibility measure is used. For solving the formulated problem, a hybrid intelligent algorithm integrating fuzzy simulation and genetic algorithm is designed. Results show that the algorithm converges in a more reasonable time in comparison with conventional approaches. © 2011 IEEE.

A methodology for analyzing the quality of a specific kind of cheese is proposed in this work. The idea consists in extending the well-known categorical scale corresponding to the possible perceptions of qualified experts (that commonly ranges from "very bad quality" to "very high quality") to a more flexible scale. In addition, some statistical inference techniques will be applied to determine if the quality of cheese is as good as it can be expected. The procedure is applied to a real-life study concerning the quality control of the so-called Gamonedo cheese. © 2011 IEEE.

Fuzzy C-Means has been used as a popular fuzzy clustering method due to its simplicity and high speed in clustering large data sets. However, C-Means has two shortcomings: dependency on the initial state and convergence to local optima. In this paper a new algorithm based on simulated annealing and possibilistic noise rejection clustering is proposed to reduce the problem of converging to local minima and dependency on initial states. The comparison of the proposed algorithms and some other algorithms in the literature shows that the algorithms outperforms other algorithms in terms of optimization objective function and is capable of doing clustering in noisy environments more efficiently. © 2011 IEEE.

Each passing year bears witness to the development of ever more powerful computers, increasingly fast and cheap storage media, and even higher bandwidth data connections.
