Partnering with Students to Develop a Capstone for a Graduate Health Informatics program

Objective This study aimed to assess the desirability, feasibility, and sustainability of integrating a project-based capstone course with the course-based curriculum of an interdisciplinary MSc Health Informatics program guided by a student-partnered steering committee and student-centered approach. Methods We conducted an online cross-sectional survey ( n = 87) and three semistructured focus groups ( n = 18) of health informatics students and alumni. Survey data were analyzed descriptively. Focus groups were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim and then analyzed using a general inductive and classic analysis approach. Results Most students supported including a capstone project but desired an option to work independently or within a group. Students perceived several benefits to capstone courses while concerned over perceived challenges to capstone implementation, evaluation, and managing group processes. The themes identified were (1) professional development, identity, and career advancement, (2) emulating the real world and learning beyond the classroom, (3) embracing new, full-circle learning, (4) anticipated course structure, delivery, and preparation, (5) balancing student choice, interests, and priorities, and (6) concerns over group dynamics, limitations, and support. Conclusion This study demonstrates the value of having students as partners at each stage in the process from methods conception to course curriculum design. With the steering committee and the curriculum developer, we codeveloped a student-centered course that integrates foundational digital health-related project knowledge acquisition with an inquiry-based project that can be completed independently or in small groups. This study demonstrates the potential benefits and challenges that health informatics educators may consider when (re)designing capstone courses.

Optimizing Automated Optical Inspection: An Adaptive Fusion and Semi-Supervised Self-Learning Approach for Elevated Accuracy and Efficiency in Scenarios with Scarce Labeled Data

In the field of automatic optical inspection (AOI), this study presents innovative strategies to enhance object detection accuracy while minimizing dependence on large annotated datasets. We initially developed a defect detection model using a dataset of 3579 images across 32 categories, created in collaboration with a major Taiwanese panel manufacturer. This model was evaluated using 12,000 ambiguously labeled images, with improvements achieved through data augmentation and annotation refinement. To address the challenges of limited labeled data, we proposed the Adaptive Fused Semi-Supervised Self-Learning (AFSL) method. This approach, designed for anchor-based object detection models, leverages a small set of labeled data alongside a larger pool of unlabeled data to enable continuous model optimization. Key components of AFSL include the Bounding Box Assigner, Adaptive Training Scheduler, and Data Allocator, which together facilitate dynamic threshold adjustments and balanced training, significantly enhancing the model's performance on AOI datasets. The AFSL method improved the mean average precision (mAP) from 43.5% to 57.1% on the COCO dataset and by 2.6% on the AOI dataset, demonstrating its effectiveness in achieving high levels of precision and efficiency in AOI with minimal labeled data.

OVASO: Integrated binary CNN models to classify COVID-19, pneumonia and healthy lung in X-ray images

Several radiologists have paid attention to computer-aided detection (CAD) systems which assist in classifying diseases on chest x-ray (CXR). Recently, with the outbreak of COVID-19, CAD based on deep learning has an important role in screening COVID-19 on CXR. However, imbalanced training datasets such as COVID-19 datasets, COVID-19 (473), pneumonia (5458), and normal (7966) cause difficulty in classification. In this paper, we suggest a new evaluation approach, OVASO, that selectively combines one-versus-all (OVA) classifier and one-versus-one (OVO) to overcome class imbalance caused by the lower number of COVID-19 training datasets. In addition, as part of efforts to properly apply transfer learning, we initialized batch normalization (BN) values including gamma and beta from the viewpoint of transfer learning and found that appropriate initialization at all binary models, OVASO's components, usually increased the binary models' performance. As a result, the proposed OVASO model achieved improved accuracy and F1-score of 95.33% and 95.88%, respectively. Furthermore, the suggested OVASO performed similarly to COVID-Net, which is the current state-of-the-art model for classifying COVID-19 on CXR.

The current study presents a mathematical model to simulate a power-law fluid hammer problem in pipelines. The flow is considered two-dimensional, isothermal, weakly compressible, and laminar. The governing equations consisting of mass and momentum balances are solved by the method of characteristics. The model results are compared to other numerical model values and validated against measured data found in the literature. The comparisons show that the two-dimensional model agrees better with experimental data than the one-dimensional approach. Two dimensionless parameters (a dissipative parameter and the power-law index) are identified to govern the phenomenon, and a sensitivity analysis with respect to these parameters is conducted. It can be anticipated that the first pressure overshoot due to line packing and pressure wave dissipation increase with the dissipative parameter and with the power-law index.

Comparative Analysis of Ultrasonic and Traditional Gas-Leak Detection Systems in the Process Industries: A Monte Carlo Approach

Gas leaks can cause disasters at process sites, including fires and explosions, and thus, effective gas-leak detection systems are required. This study investigated the limitations of conventional detectors and introduced an innovative ultrasonic sensor-based approach for continuous monitoring. A new configuration for a stationary remote ultrasonic gas-leak monitoring system is proposed. The selected material was 1-Butene. The detection probability was assessed through a simulation based on a gas-leak scenario, detailing the selection criteria for leak sites and simulation conditions. Computational fluid-dynamics (CFD) simulations were used to evaluate the detection capability of the existing system, whereas Monte Carlo simulations were used to compare it with the proposed ultrasonic system. The CFD simulation was performed by setting the lower detection limit of the concentration-measurement-type gas detector to 600 ppm, and the leak-detection time was approximately 8.895 s. A Monte Carlo simulation accounting for wind direction showed that the existing system's average detection probability was 3.41%. By integrating the existing and new systems, the detection probability increased by 96.58% and 3.92% compared with that using only the concentration-measurement and ultrasonic measurement methods, respectively. These rates provide valuable insights for future applications in oil refining and petrochemical industries.

Queueing Analysis of Dynamic Power Management Schemes for Mobile Devices

In this paper, we analyze a queueing system under the dyadic server control, workload control and delivery deadlines of data blocks. From the viewpoint of efficient power management for the wireless interface of a smart mobile device, we first focus on deriving the mean length of an arbitrary cycle time and then investigate the mean energy expenditure during the cycle. Some numerical examples are shown with respect to several control parameters. We conduct simulations to evaluate the proposed analytic energy consumption models. Experiments are also performed by implementing a test program on an off-the-shelf smartphone. Our results can serve as quantitative guidelines for the efficient power management of wireless interfaces in mobile devices.

Outdoor pipeline leaks are difficult to accurately measure using existing concentration measurement systems installed in petrochemical plants owing to external air currents. Besides, leak detection is only possible for a specific gas. The purpose of this study was to develop an image/ ultrasonic convergence camera system that incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) to improve pipe leak detection and establish a real-time monitoring system. Our system includes an advanced ultrasonic camera coupled with a deep learning-based object-detection algorithm trained on pipe image data from petrochemical plants. The collected data improved the accuracy of detected gas leak localization through deep learning. Our detection model achieves an mAP50 (Mean average precision calculated at an intersection over union (IoU) threshold of 0.50)score of 0.45 on our data and is able to detect the majority of leak points within a system. The petrochemical plant environment was simulated by visiting petrochemical plants and reviewing drawings, and an outdoor experimental demonstration site was established. Scenarios such as flange connection failure were set under medium-/low-pressure conditions, and the developed product was experimented under gas leak conditions that simulated leakage accidents. These experiments enabled the removal of potentially confounding surrounding noise sources, which led to the false detection of actual gas leaks using the AI piping detection technique.
