The ultimate goal of the RAPID Center is to provide broad access to the RAPID Center Library System. The program started small within the software development Center-Washington and with the next phase will be expanded to all of the Information Systems software Center's five software development Centers. In that expansion. RAPID realizes that the Department of Defense's (DOD) Ada Mandate alone will not ensure the DOD objectives of reduced software development, costs, the promotion of software engineering principles and the proliferation of reusable Ada code. It is only with disciplines such as Ada methodologies, obiect oriented design, and reuse programs such as RAPID that will promote software engineering that we will ever collectively realise the DOD Ada Objectives. The RAPID Center promises to be the one vehicle to propel the Army and beyond to new levels of increased productivity at reduced costs.

AYUMI, a mechanism that improves software quality and productivity and by which the development process is refined, is described. A series of methods which span activities from data evaluation to the feedback of findings has been developed. This methodology has approximately 100 evaluation items, including both quantitative and qualitative types. These items are categorized into about 40 groups and scored on a scale from one to five. The evaluation results are compiled into tables and reported to the project team. Work in the field is monitored, and feedback improves the development process. The operation of AYUMI is described, and some possible applications are discussed.
