A member of the University of Idaho College of Engineering faculty. She graduated from the University of California at Davis. Frincke is the co-director and co-founder of the university's Center for Secure and Dependable Software (CSDS). She was the program chair for the 2nd International Workshop on Recent Advances in Intrusion Detection (RAID). A professor of Computer Science at the College of Integrated Science and Technology at James Madison University in Harrisonburg Virginia. He holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Texas at Austin and a BA in philosophy from the University of Houston. Reynolds is the Director of Information System Security Education at James Madison University. Since 1997 Reynolds has led the development of the first remote Internet-based curriculum that leads to an M.S. degree in computer science with a concentration in information security. Thus far 160 students have completed this program. A professor of computer information systems at Idaho State University and the manager of its Simplot Decision Support Center.

In the past decade, the booming of Internet challenges the middleware in three aspects: quality of service, balance of changes and stabilization, and across-Internet integration. This paper presents our work on distributed object computing middleware technology for these challenges, as well as the research and development on StarBus+, which is a CORBA standard-compliant middleware suite with the features such as object request broker supporting multi-*quality of service, component model, and integration with Web Service. This paper comprehensively presents the design and characteristics of StarBus+, and demonstrates how StarBus+ is enhanced to address the challenges of Internet computing through three case studies: inter-enterprise integration over Internet, application evolution through dynamic reconfiguration, and great massive information system building. The paper also suggests some research directions which are important for Internet computing.

The paper presents a major part of the STEP-X project (Structured development Process by the example of X-By-Wire-Application in the automotive), namely a seamless, model based software development process in automotive engineering. Our process is model based and supported by a tool chain. The tool DOORS is used for requirements management and engineering whereas the CASE tool Artisan RtS based on the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and the CASE tool Ascet SD are used for specification and design purposes. Each of these tools has its particular strength in a certain design phase. We propose designing rules and modeling guidelines for the development of state based behavior which conforms to seamless model transformation in our tool chain. The rules are checked by an embedded rule-checker. Additionally we illustrate our approach in a case study on a subsystem of the Volkswagen car electronics. The case study is characterized by state-oriented and concurrent behavior as well as time and value-discrete information processing. Copyright © 2003 SAE International.

Survey of reduced workload and crewing strategies for ocean patrol vessels

He has applied most of his 24 years of experience in the application of human engineering technology to maritime systems. Mr. Baker has directed much of Carlow's efforts to reduce ship workload and to improve human performance and maritime safety through application of human factors methods and data. He is a Certified Industrial Ergonomist (CIE) as well as a Certified Human Factors Engineering Professional (CHFEP). Both certifications were granted by Oxford Research where Mr. Baker also serves as an Advisory Board member. Russell D. Krull P.E. is a senior engineer with A&T/Proteus Engineering with more than 18 years of experi-ence in marine engineering naval architecture and program management including 16 years of active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard. Recent experience includes advanced ship design studies engineering software development technical support for the USMC Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle propulsion systems analyses ship structural engineering and cargo handling systems engineering. Mr. Krull has an M.S.E. in naval architecture and marine engineering and an M.S.E. in industrial and operations engineering from University of Michigan and a B.S. in ocean engineering from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Capt. Glenn L. Snyder USCG. Regrettably since this paper was originally written Capt. Snyder has passed away. At the time of his death he was an operations specialist assigned to the Coast Guard's Deepwater Capabilities Replacement Project as Chief of Human Systems Integration. He served as commanding officer of the patrol boat Cape George (WPB-95306) the icebreaking tug Biscayne Bay (WTGB-104) and the cutter Legare (WMEC-911). A 1975 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Capt. Snyder held an M.A. in national security and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College and an M.A. in international relations from Salve Regina College. In addition he was a 1998 fellow of the Foreign Service

The U.S. Coast Guard is in the concept exploration phase of its Integrated Deepwater System (IDS) acquisition project. This project will define the next generation of surface, air and command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) assets used to perform the Coast Guard's missions in the IDS environment (>50 NM off the U. S. coastline). As part of early technology investigations, the needs exist to: (1) analyze the workload requirements of the IDS, (2) identify alternative means to perform ship's work, and (3) optimize ship manning consistent with ship workload, performance criteria, and the available tools and equipment aboard. To reduce shipboard work requires an understanding of the mission and support requirements placed on the vessel and crew, how these requirements are currently met, and how requirements might otherwise be met to reduce workload and crew size. This study examined currently implemented workload and manpower reducing approaches of commercial maritime fleets, U.S. and foreign navies, and foreign coastguards. These approaches were analyzed according to evaluation criteria approved by the IDS acquisition project team. From this, strategies for shipboard work reduction that may be considered for adoption by the IDS were identified and analyzed according to performance and costs factors. Ten workload-reducing strategies were identified: damage control, bridge, multiple crewing, engineering, risk acceptance, modularity, deck, enabling technologies, ship/personnel readiness, and operability and maintainability.

In this paper, we discuss how object-orientation and the industrial standard for software development, "software Lifecycle Processes, IEEE/EIA 12207.0-1996" can be used to enhance the students' design experience in a 400-level course in a software engineering program. Although every phase of the software development lifecycle is important, we have found that the two lifecycle phases which present the greatest challenges in a classroom environment are the software requirements analysis phase and the software design phase. Practical experience with requirements definition is an important part of the software engineering process, but it is beyond the scope of this paper;we shall focus on the latter phase. Furthermore, we claim that students benefit from first developing proficiency in the software design phase - before they face the major challenges of the software requirements analysis phase. This design proficiency can be developed by employing the industrial evaluation criteria, described in IEEE/EIA 12207, for both the high-level and detailed designs produced by the students. We also recommend that the students work from clear, consistent, and reasonably complete requirements provided by the instructor in the project assignment. It is critical that the students continue beyond the design phase and actually implement, test and document their projects, because some design flaws are not obvious to inexperienced software developers until they attempt to write code based on the flawed design. This paper discusses how we focused on the design phase of software development and encouraged design practices that would be effective for industrial projects, as well as our much smaller academic projects.

Pascal's long and successful run at West Point illustrated Winston Churchill's dictum that, "The absence of alternatives clears the mind wonderfully." However, by the mid-90s, the United States Military Academy was finding that Pascal, long the educational workhorse, was no longer the clear choice for serious computer science education. The decision was taken to evaluate alternatives to Pascal. The criteria selected for programming language evaluation were student learning outcomes based on course goals and objectives. The controlled educational environment of a service academy provides an excellent opportunity to conduct research using control groups and experimental groups. We conducted a side by side comparison of the use of Pascal, which was specifically designed for instructional purposes, and Ada in an introductory course. The experiment demonstrated that students were much more successful in Ada than in Pascal, and led to the revision of the Academy core curriculum to use Ada 95 in our introductory computer science class. This paper discusses the details of our comparison, citing specific examples to illustrate a rational basis for evaluating programming language features against course objectives.

To improve prediction of inspection effectiveness, a methodologyfor smoothing the irregularities of the inspection data has beendeveloped. It comprises a sequential application of a battery ofmultivariate techniques, comple- menting one another in reducing thedata dimensions and improving the prediction of defect ***, the reduc- ton of data is applied through discriminantanalysis to the set of inspection variables. Empirical testing: The prototyper's evaluation mechanism

He has twenty-five years of experience in systems development and is published in the field of systems development management. He served as corporate research scientist at Systems Exploration Inc. from 1988 to 1991 program director at Computer Science Corporation from 1983 to 1988 director of operations at Republic Management Systems Corporation from 1981 to 1983 and program manager at Computer Science Corporation from 1972 to 1981. A 1962 graduate of the US. Naval Academy he holds a doctoral degree in human behavior and engineering degrees in electronics and communications. He has taught courses on information systems and systems management at most of the colleges in the San Diego area. Dr. Hafner has presented fourteen refereed research papers while publishing sixteen articles and a book A Manager's Guide to Software System Development.

Evaluating complex systems is the subject of this paper, the third in a series investigating prototyping. It provides an interesting and helpful overview of how to evaluate systems prototypes and outlines the iterative stream of developer-user interactions that is replacing older approaches to testing and evaluating new military systems, which promise to reduce the time required to develop and field future military capabilities. Changes to the acquisition process, such as those the paper sketches, will facilitate the nation's rapid transit through its current revolution in military affairs.

He received a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1984 and an M.S.E. degree in electical engineering from the Unversity of Central Florida in 1991. He joined the Naval Air Warfare Center in 1985 and worked for seven years on submarine combat system trainingbefore moving to the Modeling and Simulation Development Branch. He is currently a member of the NavAir JTCTS team. Mark J. Munkacsy:is a principal engineer at Raytheon Electronic Systems in Portsmouth RI. He received a B.S. degreein After nuclear power and submarine training he served as weapons officer aboard the USS Boston fast-attack submarine. In 1984 he joined Raytheon and served as lead engineer for the development os submarine-launched Tomahawk fire-control software. He is currently the lead modelingand simulation engineer for the JTCTS program.

The Joint Tactical Combat Training System (JTCTS) is a joint Navy/Air Force program to provide enhanced tactical combat training from single-platform warfighting through integration of multi-platform coordinated combat training (surface, subsurface, and air). Key requirements of JTCTS include the use of the Global Positioning System to generate platform position information, simulated platforms and weapons, and a real-time radio datalink to transmit training data within 400 nm of a JTCTS core-capable site, using a distributed simulation architecture derived from distributed interactive simulations. Many design tradeoffs need to be made to implement this system. To enable the meaningful test and tradeoff of various design options, a software model of the JTCTS system was constructed. This discrete-event simulation was implemented entirely in software running on commercial workstations. The model allows the designers to test various software and hardware design implementations and measure their influence on the ''goodness'' of the exercise data. Based on platform attitude and relative position, datalink connectivity can be assessed and various message-passing algorithms tested. The effects of message latency and communications dropouts on dead-reckoning accuracy can be directly measured. Effects of aircraft antenna shading, atmospheric effects on radio frequency propagation, and others can be turned on or off depending on the needs of the particular test, and to support validation of the model. The engineering model was created during the project concept definition;it is being used today in a number of design studies. One, a datalink transmitter power tradeoff, is giving insight into the relationship between the accuracy of after-action reports and the heat dissipation of the datalink components.
