Sparse graph-based inductive learning with its application to image classification

We present a graph-based classification approach called sparse graph-based inductive learning (SGIL). Different to the conventional graph-based classifiers, which perform the classification in a semisupervised way, SGIL is a purely supervised method whose classifier is totally learned in an inductive fashion instead of transductive fashion. Similar to the idea of sparse graph-based classifier, SGIL constructs a sparse graph to encode the correlations of training samples, and considers the classification issue as a regularized sparse graph partition issue where the optimal graph cut should not only minimize the correlation loss of the training samples but also minimize the classification errors. Essentially, the learned graph cut plays a role as the predicted labels here. Thus, a linear classifier can be inductively derived by learning a mapping between the training samples and the graph cuts. Since SGIL is purely supervised, it enjoys several desirable properties over the semisupervised ones in graph construction and model training. We evaluate our work on several popular image datasets. In the wireless sensor network applications, what is easily found that it is difficult to guarantee the quality of link communication in the communication channel by the scene frequency interference. In this paper, the frequency hopping communication mechanism of wireless sensor network based on RSSI is proposed. By analyzing the factors that affect the RSSI value, the RSSI value recognition network communication interference strategy is determined. By using the distributed decision fusion algorithm, all nodes participate in the network frequency hopping decision, effectively reduce the probability of false frequency decision error. The results show that the probability of accurate identification of interference is more than 95%, the error rate of FM decision can be controlled at 5%, and the quality of link communication is improved.

Water quality evaluation is vital for water monitoring and management in mangrove ecosystem of Beilun gulf and Zhenzhu bay in Guangxi of china. Over the past few years, with the expansion of urbanization and economic development, the coastal water quality in mangrove ecosystem is becoming worse. This literature applied the Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) and principal component analysis (PCA) techniques to evaluate the water quality in the study area and to evaluate the overall rating of stations with respect to the 14 water quality parameters. The PCA analysis is based on the precise clustering of FCM analysis. More reasonable evaluation of water quality by PCA was obtained. Our numerical analysis has verified the result of the current paper is correct. In addition, those results can provide some selectable methods to improve station number for interrelated management department with the limit funds and resources.

Defending against the advanced persistent threat: An optimal control approach

The new cyber attack pattern of advanced persistent threat (APT) has posed a serious threat to modern society. This paper addresses the APT defense problem, i.e., the problem of how to effectively defend against an APT campaign. Based on a novel APT attack-defense model, the effectiveness of an APT defense strategy is quantified. Thereby, the APT defense problem is modeled as an optimal control problem, in which an optimal control stands for a most effective APT defense strategy. The existence of an optimal control is proved, and an optimality system is derived. Consequently, an optimal control can be figured out by solving the optimality system. Some examples of the optimal control are given. Finally, the influence of some factors on the effectiveness of an optimal control is examined through computer experiments. These findings help organizations to work out policies of defending against APTs. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Complex activity recognition is challenging due to the inherent uncertainty and diversity of performing a complex activity. Normally, each instance of a complex activity has its own configuration of atomic actions and their temporal dependencies. We propose in this paper an atomic action-based Bayesian model that constructs Allen's interval relation networks to characterize complex activities with structural varieties in a probabilistic generative way: By introducing latent variables from the Chinese restaurant process, our approach is able to capture all possible styles of a particular complex activity as a unique set of distributions over atomic actions and relations. We also show that local temporal dependencies can be retained and are globally consistent in the resulting interval network. Moreover, network structure can be learned from empirical data. A new dataset of complex hand activities has been constructed and made publicly available, which is much larger in size than any existing datasets. Empirical evaluations on benchmark datasets as well as our in-house dataset demonstrate the competitiveness of our approach. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The traditional duplicate bug reports detection approaches are usually based on vector space model. However, the experimental result is rarely satisfying since this method cannot distinguish semantic correlation among bug reports which written by natural languages. Topic model, as a method to model underlying topics of texts, can solve the problem of document similarity calculation methods used in the information retrieving. It can find the semantic topics among the texts through massive training data, and obtain semantic relatedness among documents. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel duplication detection method based on topic model. Through selecting bug reports with execution information and combing with classified information of bugs, not only does this new method overcome the problem of high dimension, sparse data and loud noise, but also avoid the problem of synonymy and ambiguity in the natural languages. Comparing to the traditional SVM method, the recall rate and precision rate of our proposed approach have obviously increased, which indicates the effectiveness of this new method. © 2016 IEEE.

Social recommendation plays an important role in solving the cold start problem in traditional recommender systems and improving the accuracy of recommendation results. However, it still faces serious challenges and problems due to bogus ratings or relationships injected by fake users. This practice seriously affects the authenticity of recommendation results as well as normal users' trustiness on recommender systems. Moreover, simply treating social relationships as a single type affects the recommendation accuracy. To solve these problems, in this paper, after summarizing the research of current social recommendation algorithms and detecting technologies of multiple relationships, we propose a framework for the research fronts of the robust social recommendation. This framework first models and extracts multidimensional relationships, then summarizes social recommendation shilling attack models based on the analysis of the relationships in social networks as well as the roles of relationships on recommendation. Finally, it forms robust social recommendation approaches that takes multidimensional relationships into consideration. © 2016 IEEE.

Load-redistribution strategy based on time-varying load against cascading failure of complex network

Cascading failure can cause great damage to complex networks, so it is of great significance to improve the network robustness against cascading failure. Many previous existing works on load-redistribution strategies require global information, which is not suitable for large scale networks, and some strategies based on local information assume that the load of a node is always its initial load before the network is attacked, and the load of the failure node is redistributed to its neighbors according to their initial load or initial residual capacity. This paper proposes a new load-redistribution strategy based on local information considering an ever-changing load. It redistributes the loads of the failure node to its nearest neighbors according to their current residual capacity, which makes full use of the residual capacity of the network. Experiments are conducted on two typical networks and two real networks, and the experimental results show that the new load-redistribution strategy can reduce the size of cascading failure efficiently.

Smartphones are becoming increasingly energy-hungry to support feature-rich applications, posing a lot of pressure on battery lifetime and making energy consumption a non-negligible issue. In particular, dynamic random access memory (DRAM)-based main memory subsystem is a major contributor to the energy consumption of mobile devices. In this paper, we propose direct read (DR). Swap, an energy-efficient in-memory paging design to reduce energy consumption in smartphones. In DR. Swap, we adopt emerging energy-efficient nonvolatile memory (NVM) and use it as the swap area. Utilizing NVMs byte-addressability, we propose DR which guarantees zero memory copy for read-only requests when accessing a page in swap area. To better understand the energy consumption of swapping, we build an energy model to analyze the energy consumption of different paging architectures. We evaluate DR. Swap based on the Google Nexus 5 smartphone, experimental results show that our technique can reduce more than 50% energy consumption compared to DRAM backed swapping. © 2015 IEEE.

Collaborative filtering (CF) has been widely used in recommender systems to generate personalized recommendations. However, recommender systems using CF are vulnerable to shilling attacks, in which attackers inject fake profiles to manipulate recommendation results. Thus, shilling attacks pose a threat to the credibility of recommender systems. Previous studies mainly derive features from characteristics of item ratings in user profiles to detect attackers, but the methods suffer from low accuracy when attackers adopt new rating patterns. To overcome this drawback, we derive features from properties of item popularity in user profiles, which are determined by users' different selecting patterns. This feature extraction method is based on the prior knowledge that attackers select items to rate with man-made rules while normal users do this according to their inner preferences. Then, machine learning classification approaches are exploited to make use of these features to detect and remove attackers. Experiment results on the MovieLens dataset and Amazon review dataset show that our proposed method improves detection performance. In addition, the results justify the practical value of features derived from selecting patterns. © 2016 The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers.
