Graph neural networks (GNNs) are widely used on graph-structured data, and its research has made substantial progress in recent years. However, given the various number of choices and combinations of components such as aggregator and activation function, designing GNNs for specific tasks is very heavy manual work. Recently, neural architecture search (NAS) was proposed with the aim of automating the GNN design process and generating task-dependent architectures. While existing approaches have achieved competitive performance, they are not well suited to practical application scenarios where the computational budget is limited. In this paper, we propose an auto-designed lightweight graph neural network (ALGNN) method to automatically design lightweight, task-dependent GNN architectures. ALGNN uses multi-objective optimization to optimize the architecture constrained by the computation cost and complexity of the model. We define, for the first time, an evaluation standard for consumption cost with the analysis of the message passing process in GNNs. Experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate that ALGNN can generate a lightweight GNN model that has much fewer parameters and GPU hours, meanwhile has comparable performance with state-of-the-art approaches. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

To prevent different chemicals from entering the brain, the blood-brain barrier penetrating peptide (3BPP) acts as a vital barrier between the bloodstream and the central nervous system (CNS). This barrier significantly hinders the treatment of neurological and CNS disorders. 3BPP can get beyond this barrier, making it easier to enter the brain and essential for treating CNS and neurological diseases and disorders. Computational techniques are being explored because traditional laboratory tests for 3BPP identification are costly and time-consuming. In this work, we introduced a novel technique for 3BPP prediction with a hybrid deep learning model. Our proposed model, Deep3BPP, leverages the LSA, a word embedding method for peptide sequence extraction, and integrates CNN with LSTM (CNN-LSTM) for the final prediction model. Deep3BPP performance metrics show a remarkable accuracy of 97.42%, a Kappa value of 0.9257, and an MCC of 0.9362. These findings indicate a more efficient and cost-effective method of identifying 3BPP, which has important implications for researchers in the pharmaceutical and medical industries. Thus, this work offers insightful information that can advance both scientific research and the well-being of people overall. © 2020 IEEE.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced a sudden change of traditional office works to smart working models, which however force many workers staying at home with a significant increase of sedentary lifestyle. Metabolic disorders, mental illnesses, and musculoskeletal injuries are also caused by the physical inactivity and chronic stress at work, threatening office workers' physical and physiological health. In the modern vision of smart workplaces, cyber-physical systems play a central role to augment objects, environments, and workers with integrated sensing, data processing, and communication capabilities. In this context, a work engagement system is proposed to monitor psycho-physical comfort and provide health suggestion to the office workers. Recognizing their activity, such as sitting postures and facial expressions, could help assessing the level of work engagement. In particular, head and body posture could reflects their state of engagement, boredom or neutral condition. In this paper we proposed a method to recognize such activities using an infrared sensor array by analyzing the sitting postures. The proposed approach can unobstructively sense their activities in a privacy-preserving way. To evaluate the performance of the system, a working scenario has been set up, and their activities were annotated by reviewing the video of the subjects. We carried out an experimental analysis and compared Decision Tree and k-NN classifiers, both of them showed high recognition rate for the eight postures. As to the work engagement assessment, we analyzed the sitting postures to give the users suggestions to take a break when the postures such as lean left/right with arm support, lean left/right without arm support happens very often.

This one-day hybrid workshop builds on previous feminist CSCW workshops to explore feminist theoretical and methodological approaches that have provided us with useful tools to see things differently and make space for change. Since its inception over a decade ago, feminist HCI has progressed from the margins to mainstream HCI, with numerous references in the literature. Feminist HCI has also evolved to incorporate other critical HCI practices such as Queer HCI, participatory design, and speculative design. While feminist approaches have grown in popularity and become mainstream, it is getting more difficult to distinguish the feminist emancipatory core from other attempts of developing and improving society in various ways. In this workshop, we therefore want to revisit our feminist roots, where theory is a liberatory and creative practice, motivated by affect, curiosity, and wonder. From this standpoint, we consider which of our feminist tools can make a significant difference today, in a highly datafied world. The goal of this workshop is to;1) create an inventory of feminist theories and concepts that have had an impact on our work as designers, educators, researchers, and activists;2) develop a feminist toolbox for the CSCW community to strengthen our feminist literacy. © 2023 Owner/Author.

Automated Dominative Subspace Mining for Efficient Neural Architecture Search

Neural Architecture Search (NAS) aims to automatically find effective architectures within a predefined search space. However, the search space is often extremely large. As a result, directly searching in such a large search space is non-trivial and also very time-consuming. To address the above issues, in each search step, we seek to limit the search space to a small but effective subspace to boost both the search performance and search efficiency. To this end, we propose a novel Neural Architecture Search method via Dominative Subspace Mining (DSM-NAS) that finds promising architectures in automatically mined subspaces. Specifically, we first perform a global search, i.e., dominative subspace mining, to find a good subspace from a set of candidates. Then, we perform a local search within the mined subspace to find effective architectures. More critically, we further boost search performance by taking well-designed/searched architectures to initialize candidate subspaces. Experimental results demonstrate that DSM-NAS not only reduces the search cost but also discovers better architectures than state-of-the-art methods in various benchmark search spaces. Kidney stone disease is a serious public health concern that is getting worse with changes in diet, obesity, medical conditions, certain supplements etc. A kidney stone also called a renal calculus, is a hard buildup of urine minerals that form in the kidneys. Computed tomography (CT) is one of the imaging models used to identify kidney stones by clinical experts. Due to the low resolution of these images, sometimes detecting kidney stones is tedious with the naked eye, which may lead to false alarms. In this work, a computer-based diagnosis system with a deep learning technique has been developed as a practical solution to aid clinicians in their diagnosis. The traditional convolutional neural network (CNN)-based deep learning technology can detect stones in the kidney. Still, it suffers from the performance and standard implementation of the convolution operations in convolution layers. A Kronecker product-based convolution technique is incorporated in the proposed deep learning architecture to reduce the redundancy in feature maps without convolution overlapping. Our proposed method helps to make the network more effective by extracting abstract and in-depth features from the input images. The publicly available GitHub kidney stone CT scans are utilized to develop the proposed architecture. Our automated model detected kidney stones with an accuracy of 98.56% utilizing CT images. Our system is more effective than the most recent and cutting-edge techniques developed for identifying kidney stones of any size, including the smallest ones. © 2023 The Author(s)

This paper proposes an improved cyber-physical false information detection model based on cross-modal ambiguous learning. This work introduced the IC2 LFD model with an emphasis on ‘text-image’ ambiguity, focusing on the main goal of intelligent multi-cross modal data fake information identification. The experiment revealed that the significance of text and images differs in intelligent multi-cross modal data fake information detection. The effectiveness of the model is verified on the twitter dataset, showing a 6% accuracy improvement compared to the baseline model and a 1.6% performance improvement over detection methods without dynamic weight allocation. © 2025 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

The clustering of categorical data is a common and important task in computer science, offering profound implications across a spectrum of applications. Unlike purely numerical data, categorical data often lack inherent ordering as in nominal data, or have varying levels of order as in ordinal data, thus requiring specialized methodologies for efficient organization and analysis. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of categorical data clustering in the past twenty-five years, starting from the introduction of K-modes. It elucidates the pivotal role of categorical data clustering in diverse fields such as health sciences, natural sciences, social sciences, education, engineering, and economics. Practical comparisons are conducted for algorithms having public implementations, highlighting distinguishing clustering methodologies and revealing the performance of recent algorithms on several benchmark categorical datasets. Improving Generalization of Metric Learning via Listwise Self-distillation

Most deep metric learning (DML) methods employ a strategy that forces all positive samples to be close in the embedding space while keeping them away from negative ones. However, such a strategy ignores the internal relationships of positive (negative) samples and often leads to overfitting, especially in the presence of hard samples and mislabeled samples. In this work, we propose a simple yet effective regularization, namely Listwise Self-Distillation (LSD), which progressively distills a model's own knowledge to adaptively assign a more appropriate distance target to each sample pair in a batch. LSD encourages smoother embeddings and information mining within positive (negative) samples as a way to mitigate overfitting and thus improve generalization. Our LSD can be directly integrated into general DML frameworks. Extensive experiments show that LSD consistently boosts the performance of various metric learning methods on multiple datasets.
