Clustering is a data mining technique that allows the grouping of data points on the basis of their similarity with respect to multiple dimensions of measurement. It has also been applied in the software engineering domain, in particular to support software quality assessment based on source code metrics. Unfortunately, since clusters emerge from metrics at the source code level, it is difficult to interpret the significance of clusters at the level of the quality of the entire system. In this paper, we propose a method for interpreting source code clusters using the ISO/IEC 9126 software product quality model. Several methods have been proposed to perform quantitative assessment of software systems in terms of the quality characteristics defined by ISO/IEC 9126. These methods perform mappings of low-level source code metrics to high-level quality characteristics by various aggregation and weighting procedures. We applied such a method to obtain quality profiles at various abstraction levels for each generated source code cluster. Subsequently, the plethora of quality profiles obtained is visualized such that conclusions about different quality problems in various clusters can be obtained at a glance.

Inspired by Weber's Law, this paper proposes a simple, yet very powerful and robust local descriptor, Weber Local Descriptor (WLD). It is based on the fact that human perception of a pattern depends on not only the change of a stimulus (such as sound, lighting, et al.) but also the original intensity of the stimulus. Specifically, WLD consists of two components: its differential excitation and orientation. A differential excitation is a function of the ratio between two terms: One is the relative intensity differences of its neighbors against a current pixel;the other is the intensity of the current pixel. An orientation is the gradient orientation of the current pixel. For a given image, we use the differential excitation and the orientation components to construct a concatenated WLD histogram feature. Experimental results on Brodatz textures show that WLD impressively outperforms the other classical descriptors (e.g., Gabor). Especially, experimental results on face detection show a promising performance. Although we train only one classifier based on WLD features, the classifier obtains a comparable performance to state-of-the-art methods on MIT+CMU frontal face test set, AR face dataset and CMU profile test set.

In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm, NCLOSED, for mining the N k-closed itemsets with the highest supports for 1 up to a certain k max value. The algorithm adopts best-first search strategy to generate closed itemsets with highest remaining supports. It does not keep closed itemsets mined in main memory to ensure that they are really closed. This is because this algorithm can directly generate closed itemsets. Moreover, duplicated closed itemsets are detected and discarded from this algorithm.

In this panel, we propose to figure out how requirements engineering and interaction design can be usefully combined. In particular, some people argue that scenarios/ use cases should be concrete, as in story-telling. Others argue for use of "essential" use cases as a methodological approach to interaction and user-interface design. Somewhat in the middle, it is argued that use cases should help acquiring the requirements in the first place. What should the practitioner believe and, in particular, do, in order to develop useful and usable software and systems? software development and interaction design require different skills and different methods and are typically done by different people. Still, scenario-based design is proposed for several activities relevant for both tasks, such as requirements elicitation, software design, and interaction design. Symbolic modeling in this spirit is actually common to various fields. However, scenario-based approaches vary, especially with regard to their use, e.g., employing abstract use cases or integrating scenarios with functions and goals in a systematic design process. So, the key issue to be raised at the panel is how to combine different approaches, e.g., in scenario-based development, so that the interaction design as well as the development of the user interface and of the software internally result in an overall useful and useable system.

The service business for industrial plants poses challenges, which require the use of appropriate service information systems. In order to support the user in an optimal way during service execution the system developer needs to know these challenges to determine and prioritize requirements and thus to plan innovation of the product systematically. This article introduces a generic service information system architecture which allows the mapping of challenges in industrial service business to specific components of industrial service information systems. The evaluation of information systems regarding the support they offer in industrial service business is thereby objectified significantly, which can help system suppliers to identify future requirements and potential for innovation.

In this paper, we proposed an efficient algorithm, TOPK_CLOSED, for mining top-k closed itemsets. This algorithm mines top-k closed itemsets using best-first search. The closed itemsets with the highest supports are firstly found from this algorithm. Consequently, the method quickly finds top-k closed itemsets, which leads to an efficient pruning unnecessary itemsets and stop mining rapidly. In addition, this algorithm can generate closed itemsets without keeping candidates in main memory.

The paper describe the possibility of using visualization in education of theoretical computer science. Abstract computational models are used frequently in theoretical computer science. We have developed an animations that visualize a concrete examples this models (finite automata, push down automata, turing machine) that helps the learner to better understand principles of this models. We use these small learning objects in e-learning course in web based environment, LMS Moodle. The work with the visualization object of computational models will enable students to comprehend the theory of computing and it will be also used to check and assess their knowledge. © 2007 ACM.

We present a method for effective navigation in structure of large information spaces. The method employs incremental browsing of the information space structure and visualizes in every moment only specific part of the space (a window) where its content is selected adaptively according to evaluations of the presented entities. Entity evaluations are gained from interactions with entities (manual browsing of people or automatic browsing by applications). We describe proposed method in the context of ontology structure navigation.
