Most adaptive web-based hypermedia systems adapt presentation of the content and/or navigation using predefined set of rules. Considering different behavior and preferences of each user it may be hard to generalize and construct all appropriate rules in advance. This problem is more noticeable in educational adaptive hypermedia systems, where adaptation to individual learning style of a student is important for the student to effectively assess particular domain. In this paper we present techniques for data mining, which can be used to discover knowledge about students' behavior during learning, as well as techniques, which take advantage of such knowledge to recommend students lessons they should study next. We also describe a process of recommendation based on knowledge discovery and present an architecture of a web-based system, which uses proposed approach to improve adaptation. Proposed architecture is independent of actual adaptive hypermedia system used. Copyright 2005 ACM.

We have recently developed an object-oriented refinement calculus called rCOS to formalize the basic object-orient design principles, patterns and refactoring as refinement laws. The aim is of rCOS is to provide a formal support to the use-cased driven, incremental and iterative Rational Unified Process (RUP). In this paper, we apply rCOS to a step-wised development of a Point of Sale Terminal (POST) system, from a requirement model to a design model, and finally, to the implementation in Visual C#. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Downloading large data files (e.g. movie) via GPRS/UMTS can be quite costly for a mobile user whilst he is on the move. Furthermore, it is hard to predict whether the user has enough bandwidth, hence QoS resources allocated whilst moving through the cellular network for a fast and efficient download. This would possibly result in unpredictable download performance (delay and available bandwidth) and increased user incurred costs, thus reducing the user's willingness to download large data files over cellular networks. In this paper, we present an architecture concept for distributed content downloads to WLAN hotspot caches depending on the users location or pre defined traveling route. We show how location-based downloads could be realized by the inter-play between heterogeneous network and positioning systems, which can possibly result in a simpler and more efficient resource allocation in such scenarios.

In this paper we present an approach to sharing a user model among several adaptive hypermedia applications. Current adaptive hypermedia applications often realize the user model as the internal part of the system without any possibility to share this model with other applications. We introduce a Web service called UMoWS (user model Web service). The Web service acts as a store of user characteristics represented in pre-defined ontologies that define semantics of the stored knowledge. Access and corresponding privileges to the Web service is managed by the user through the management interface. The user is also allowed to inspect/modify the state of the user model.

The routing algorithms for multimedia communication should use for routing more than one QoS parameter. This is because new services such as video on demand and remote meeting systems require better QoS. However, the problem of QoS routing is difficult and to find a feasible route with two independent path constraints is NP-complete. Also, QoS routing algorithms for broadband networks must be adaptive, flexible, and intelligent for efficient network management. In this paper, we propose a multipurpose optimization method for QoS routing based on genetic algorithm (GA). The simulation results show that proposed method has a good performance and is a promising method for QoS routing.

The routing algorithms for multimedia communication should use for routing more than one QoS parameter. Many small and medium-sized companies that develop software experience the same problems repeatedly, and have few systems in place to learn from their own mistakes as well as their own successes. Here, we propose a lightweight method to collect experience from completed software projects, and compare the results of this method to more widely applied experience reports. We find that the new method captures more information about core processes related to software development in contrast to experience reports that focus more on management processes. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

This document1 contains definitions of a wide range of concepts specific to and widely used within temporal databases. In addition to providing definitions, the document also includes explanations of concepts as well as discussions of the adopted names. The consensus effort that lead to this glossary was initiated in Early 1992. Earlier versions appeared in SIGMOD Record in September 1992 and March 1994. The present glossary subsumes all the previous documents. The glossary meets the need for creating a higher degree of consensus on the definition and naming of temporal database concepts. Two sets of criteria are included. First, all included concepts were required to satisfy four relevance criteria, and, second, the naming of the concepts was resolved using a set of evaluation criteria. The concepts are grouped into three categories: concepts of general database interest, of temporal database interest, and of specialized interest. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

The authors address the data access and analysis issues faced by interdisciplinary Earth scientists and graduate students as a prototypical domain community which will be accessing large data sets in Earth system science in the following decades. They present a working prototype developed at George Mason University to serve wide user needs termed Virtual Domain Application Data Center (VDADC). The VDADC prototype provides tools, data products and services tailored to users and can be extended to other domain communities. The VDADC operates in a distributed environment, the World Wide Web, and in close association with federated data centers. Moreover, the information technology implementation is driven by science scenarios and can apply to a variety of domain users, thus reducing network traffic the data centers by implementing intelligent data searching or "content-based browsing" prior to data ordering thus more effectively addressing user needs.
