This research investigates the complex relationships between social media, body image, and bullying among adolescent boarding school students, with an emphasis on the Malaysian context. Utilizing science fiction as a conceptual lens, the study presents hypothetical future scenarios to investigate how technological advancements could impact these interconnected issues. The paper seeks to provide nuanced insights into the ethical and policy implications of social media use in boarding schools by drawing on key theories such as Social Comparison Theory, Social-Ecological Model and Uses and Gratifications Theory. Through comparative analysis of hypothetical scenarios, this study aims to provide educators, policymakers, and technologists with a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities at this intersection. The ultimate objective is to contribute to the ongoing discourse concerning adolescent mental health and to propose actionable strategies for mitigating negative outcomes in the unique context of Malaysian boarding schools. © 2024 IEEE.

EPM: Evolutionary Perception Method for Anomaly Detection in Noisy Dynamic Graphs

With the rapid expansion of interactions across various domains such as social networks, transaction networks, and IP-IP networks, anomaly detection in dynamic graphs has become increasingly critical for mitigating potential risks. However, existing anomaly detection methods often assume noise-free dynamic graphs, overlooking the prevalence of noisy dynamic graphs in real-world applications. Specifically, noisy dynamic graphs affected by structural noises—such as spurious and missing nodes and edges—struggle to consistently provide reliable structural evidence for anomaly detection. To tackle this challenge, we propose an Evolutionary Perception Method (EPM) for identifying anomalous nodes in noisy dynamic graphs by resisting the interference of structural noises. EPM primarily consists of two components: a dynamic fitter and a filtering reviser. The dynamic fitter characterizes the interaction dynamics of nodes that removes and generates links at each period as a multiple superposition state, utilizing various link prediction algorithms to fit evolutionary mechanisms. Additionally, the filtering reviser designs evolutional entropies to quantify the evolutional uncertainty in multiple superposition states, further reconstructing the Kalman filter to optimize these entropies. Extensive experiments have proved that our proposed EPM outperforms state-of-the-art methods in discovering anomalous nodes in noisy dynamic graphs. © 1989-2012 IEEE.

Expert-sourcing Domain-specific Knowledge: The Case of Synonym Validation

One prerequisite for supervised machine learning is high quality labelled data. Acquiring such data is, particularly if expert knowledge is required, costly or even impossible if the task needs to be performed by a single expert. In this paper, we illustrate tool support that we adopted and extended to source domain-specific knowledge from experts. We provide insight in design decisions that aim at motivating experts to dedicate their time at performing the labelling task. We are currently using the approach to identify true synonyms from a list of candidate synonyms. The identification of synonyms is important in scenarios were stakeholders from different companies and background need to collaborate, for example when defining and negotiating requirements. We foresee that the approach of expert-sourcing is applicable to any data labelling task in software engineering. Cloud computing attracts increasing attention in processing dynamic computing tasks and automating the software development and operation pipeline. In many cases, the computing tasks have strict deadlines. The cloud resource manager (e.g., orchestrator) effectively manages the resources and provides tasks Quality of Service (QoS). Cloud task scheduling is tricky due to the dynamic nature of task workload and resource availability. Reinforcement Learning (RL) has attracted lots of research attention in scheduling. However, those RL-based approaches suffer from low scheduling performance robustness when the task workload and resource availability change, particularly when handling time-critical tasks. This paper focuses on both challenges of robustness and deadline guarantee among such RL, specifically Deep RL (DRL)-based scheduling approaches. We quantify the robustness measurements as the retraining time and investigate how to improve both robustness and deadline guarantee of DRL-based scheduling. We propose MLR-TC-DRLS, a practical, robust Meta Deep Reinforcement Learning-based scheduling solution to provide time-critical tasks deadline guarantee and fast adaptation under highly dynamic situations. We comprehensively evaluate MLR-TC-DRLS performance against RL-based and RL advanced variants-based scheduling approaches using real-world and synthetic data. The evaluations validate that our proposed approach improves the scheduling performance robustness of typical DRL variants scheduling approaches with 97%–98.5% deadline guarantees and 200%–500% faster adaptation. © 2023 The Author(s)

In recent years, remote work has become a more popular option for companies across various industries. While remote work provides numerous benefits, such as flexibility and increased work-life balance, it also presents unique challenges that can hinder team collaboration, productivity, and overall success. In order to overcome these obstacles, it is essential to adopt effective organizational patterns that can help build high-performing remote teams. Building a high-performing remote team requires a set of strategies with some key focus points to be kept in mind such as communication, trust, goals, collaboration, and performance. For all of these, there have been an extensive research and publication of observed patterns to which we have also contributed with a new set of these four patterns: Use Common Language, Discuss Publicly, Lights, Camera, Action!, and Praise in Public, Correct in Private.

Smart grids (SGs) rely on home area networks (HANs) and neighborhood area networks (NANs) to ensure efficient power distribution, real-time monitoring, and seamless communication between smart devices. Despite these advantages, the use of public communication channels in HAN and NAN networks introduces critical challenges, such as vulnerability to impersonation, physical tampering, and scalability issues in resource-constrained environments. These issues compromise the stability, reliability, and security of SG environments. Existing protocols often fail to adequately address these challenges, particularly in ensuring resistance to physical tampering of supply lines and impersonation attacks. Additionally, they struggle to minimize the computation, communication, and energy costs associated with securing a resource-constrained SG environment. Therefore, we propose a robust key exchange and tamper-resistant protocol for HAN and NAN networks to address these limitations. The proposed protocol leverages the physical unclonable function (PUF) mechanism to offer physical tampering resistance to smart meters. We validate our protocol formally using the Random or Real (RoR) model, which confirms its security robustness. Additionally, our informal security analysis highlights the protocol’s resilience against impersonation, physical tampering attacks, etc. We analyze and compare the performance of the proposed protocol, which further demonstrates our protocol’s effectiveness and security compared to competing protocols. Moreover, the proposed protocol achieves resource efficiency with 45.99% and 58.85% substantial reductions in computation overhead and energy overhead, respectively, compared to competing protocols. These results showcase the protocol’s enhanced security and practicality for resource-constrained SG environments. © 2014 IEEE.

In a real-life scenario, extracting emotion from unstructured text is an active and challenging area of research. It has diverse applications in various aspects of our daily life To overcome various challenges involved in detecting emotion from text, researchers from diverse fields applied various machine learning algorithms. However, deep learning methods such as long short-term memory is effective to detect emotion by maintaining the sequence structure of the text. In this work, we use Bi-directional long short-term memory with attention layer for emotion detection for better accuracy for prediction. In addition, we employ a text preprocessing method to improve further results. We perform the experiments on three data sets and the models are evaluated based on the classification accuracy. © 2021 IEEE.

Traditional data monetization approaches face challenges related to data protection and logistics. In response, digital data marketplaces have emerged as intermediaries simplifying data transactions. Despite the growing establishment and acceptance of digital data marketplaces, significant challenges hinder efficient data trading. As a result, few companies can derive tangible value from their data, leading to missed opportunities in understanding customers, pricing decisions, and fraud prevention. In this paper, we explore both technical and organizational challenges affecting data monetization. Addressing the challenge of severe inter-layer and intra-layer interference in densely deployed Femtocells, we introduce an efficient resource allocation strategy centered on clustering. Initially, we employ the Fractional Frequency Reuse (FFR) technique to mitigate interference by segmenting cells into distinct ***, leveraging graph theory and convex optimization, we cluster the Femto Base Stations (FBS) to enhance efficiency. An algorithm prioritizing user fairness governs sub-channel allocation among FBSs. Additionally, a distributed power control algorithm dynamically adjusts FBS power levels, further enhancing system throughput. Comparative analysis reveals that our approach surpasses traditional non-clustered methods and three other comparison methods, exhibiting superior system throughput and Signal-to-Interference Ratio (SINR). Notably, our method significantly enhances user fairness, promoting greater satisfaction among Femto User Equipment (FUE) users. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.
