Manifold learning method is a dimensionality reduction method that treats the data in non-Euclidean space as a Euclidean space in a local scope. However, most existing manifold learning methods cannot obtain the true neighborbood relationship of each sample point well. Therefore, we propose a manifold learning method based on adaptive local neighborhood. This method can adaptively select a neighborhood window. It can be approximated as a local Euclidean space based on the sample characteristics. To implement this method, a specific manifold learning method, named Laplacian Eigenmap of Adaptive Local Neighborhood Window (ALNWLE) is proposed. ALNWLE mainly contains two modules, namely the manifold structure learning module (MSLM) and the manifold structure pattern recognition module (MSPR). MSLM constructs an adaptive local neighborhood adjacency matrix to constrain the learning of the manifold structure. MSPR uses the interpolation method to recognize new sample patterns. The adaptive local neighborhood method proposed in this paper is a general method which is applicable to any manifold learning method. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Speaker recognition (SR) systems are particularly vulnerable to adversarial example (AE) attacks. To mitigate these attacks, AE detection systems are typically integrated into SR systems. To overcome the limitations of low detection accuracy, poor generalization, and high latency in existing schemes, this paper proposes FreqSense, an AE detection scheme based on frequency distribution features. FreqSense detects a variety of unknown AE attacks with low latency, and provides interpretability in its detection process. The basic idea of FreqSense is that AE typically introduce carefully designed noise in specific frequency bands that are associated with highly distinctive speaker identities. Therefore, leveraging the distributional variations in these frequency bands can effectively distinguish between AE and benign audio. FreqSense models frequency distribution features by integrating time-frequency transformation technology with a self-attention mechanism and employs a neural network-based classifier to distinguish between AE and benign audio. Experimental results show that FreqSense achieves an overall detection accuracy of 99.2%, surpassing state-of-the-art (SOTA) schemes by 27.2%. When confronting unknown AE attacks, FreqSense achieves a detection accuracy of 98.3% with a latency of just 0.0014 seconds. © 2025 IEEE.

In video compression, motion estimation and motion compensation are critical for achieving efficient encoding. Although the commonly used SpyNet and bilinear interpolation have contributed in improving the compression efficiency, they still have limitations. SpyNet often loses details and fails to fully utilize the feature extraction capabilities of deep networks. Furthermore, bilinear interpolation inherently attenuates high-frequency information, leading to frame blurring and distortion. In this paper, we propose a novel video compression algorithm. To overcome the limitations of SpyNet, we propose a refined adaptive flow pyramid network. This network uses a multi-scale feature pyramid to capture more details. Moreover, we use an iterative cost volume refinement engine that improves the feature representation of the network and iteratively improve the accuracy of motion estimation. In addition, to overcome the limitation of bilinear interpolation, we propose a coordinate-aware attention module, which captures more high-frequency information to improve the accuracy of motion compensation. Experimental results show that our method outperforms VTM-13.2 (LDP) in terms of PSNR. © 2025 IEEE.

EffiCOVID-net: A highly efficient convolutional neural network for COVID-19 diagnosis using chest X-ray imaging

The global COVID-19 pandemic has drastically affected daily life, emphasizing the urgent need for early and accurate detection to provide adequate medical treatment, especially with limited antiviral options. Chest X-ray imaging has proven crucial for distinguishing COVID-19 from other respiratory conditions, providing an essential diagnostic tool. Deep learning (DL)-based models have proven highly effective in image diagnostics in recent years. Many of these models are computationally intensive and prone to overfitting, especially when trained on limited datasets. Additionally, conventional models often fail to capture multi-scale features, reducing diagnostic accuracy. This paper proposed a highly efficient convolutional neural network (CNN) called EffiCOVID-Net, incorporating diverse feature learning units. The proposed model consists of a bunch of EffiCOVID blocks that incorporate several layers of convolution containing (3×3) filters and recurrent connections to extract complex features while preserving spatial integrity. The performance of EffiCOVID-Net is rigorously evaluated using standard performance metrics on two publicly available COVID-19 chest X-ray datasets. Experimental results demonstrate that EffiCOVID-Net outperforms existing models, achieving 98.68% accuracy on the COVID-19 radiography dataset (D₁), 98.55% on the curated chest X-ray dataset (D₂), and 98.87% on the mixed dataset (D_Mix) in multi-class classification (COVID-19 vs. Normal vs. Pneumonia). For binary classification (COVID-19 vs. Normal), the model attains 99.06%, 99.78%, and 99.07% accuracy, respectively. Integrating Grad-CAM-based visualizations further enhances interpretability by highlighting critical regions influencing model predictions. Runoff forecasting plays a crucial role in water resource management and flood mitigation, but it often faces significant challenges due to data deficiency and decentralized datasets. Inadequate hydrological data in many watersheds hinders the development of accurate prediction models, while organizational barriers and concerns about data privacy lead to information silos, preventing effective collaborative modeling. To address these issues, we propose FedHydroDSW, a novel personalized federated learning framework for runoff forecasting in data-scarce watersheds. Our approach enables decentralized model training across multiple organizations without requiring direct data sharing, thus preserving data privacy. FedHydroDSW incorporates unique model similarity metrics and parameter adaptation methods, utilizing insights from data-rich areas to refine forecasts in data-scarce regions. Experiments on the CAMELS dataset show that FedHydroDSW significantly outperforms standalone and conventional federated learning methods, with an average 30.1% increase in NSE, and reductions of 28% in RAE and 26.6% in RMSE across multiple data-scarce basins. By enabling secure cross-silo learning, our FedHydroDSW strategy paves the way toward more equitable runoff forecasting globally. The customized training and pattern recognition techniques represent major progress in deploying federated intelligence for impactful hydrological predictions. The intricacies and instability of introducing cryogenic propellants into the combustion system have piqued the curiosity of scientists studying the procedure. The latest innovation is utilizing data-driven machine learning and deep learning approaches to gain deeper insights into the related difficulties. However, the current work serves as a baseline for future research because relatively few studies have used data-driven methodologies to assess the temperature of liquid fuel injections in combustion systems. The performance of Linear Regression (LR), Random Forest (RF), Extra Trees Regressor (ETR), Polynomial Regression (PR), Support Vector Regressor (SVR), Decision Tree Regressor (DTR), Gradient Boost Regressor (GBR), XGB Regressor (XGBoost), AdaBoost Regressor (ABR), K-Neighbors Regressor (KNR), Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM), Bi-LSTM (Bi-directional Long-Short Term Memory) has all been investigated in this study. The study also suggested a Fully Connected Neural Network (FCNN) to examine its performance and paired it with an Extra Tree Regressor (ETR). The coupled FCNN and Extra Tree Regressor outperform the other algorithms with a Mean Square Error (MSE) of 0.0000005062, Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 0.00071148, Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 0.00020672, and R-squared (R2) value of 0.99998689. Linear Regression, Polynomial Regression, and Support Vector Regressor are found to be the least-performing algorithms. The current work uses machine learning and deep learning methods to make data-driven decisions for liquid fuel injection in the combustion system. © The Author(s) 2025.

Optical Integrated Sensing and Communication With Light-Emitting Diode

This article presents a new optical integrated sensing and communication (O-ISAC) framework tailored for cost-effective light-emitting diode (LED) for enhanced Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Unlike prior research on ISAC, which predominantly focused on radio frequency (RF) band, O-ISAC capitalizes on the inherent advantages of the optical spectrum, including the ultrawide license-free bandwidth, immunity to RF interference, and energy efficiency—attributes crucial for IoT communications. The communication and sensing in our O-ISAC system unfold in two phases: 1) directionless O-ISAC and 2) directional O-ISAC. In the first phase, distributed optical access points emit nondirectional light for communication and leverage small-aperture imaging principles for sensing. In the second phase, we put forth the concept of optical beamforming, using collimating lenses to concentrate light, resulting in substantial performance enhancements in both communication and sensing. Numerical and simulation results demonstrate the feasibility and impressive performance of O-ISAC benchmarked against optical separate communication and sensing systems. © 2014 IEEE.
