Anxiety disorders significantly impact individuals' quality of life and are traditionally assessed using subjective methods, which often lack accuracy. Recent advancements have enabled the use of physiological signals for anxiety classification, providing a more objective approach. However, the multidomain nature of these signals results in high-dimensional feature sets, necessitating effective feature selection. Therefore, this paper reviews various feature selection techniques-filter, wrapper, embedded, and hybrid-used in physiological-based anxiety classification, analyzing the advantages and limitations. It also highlights key challenges and suggests future research directions. Furthermore, this review introduces a proposed study utilizing a novel Corr-FGA hybrid feature selection algorithm to develop an efficient anxiety classification framework. The proposed framework achieves the highest accuracy of 88.93% using 8 features. This review aims to guide researchers in developing a robust, efficient anxiety classification model while providing insights that can help streamline feature selection and optimize machine learning model performance in real-world applications. © 2025 IEEE.

Reinforcement Learning(RL)is gaining importance in automating penetration testing as it reduces human effort and increases ***,given the rapidly expanding scale of modern network infrastructure,the limited testing scale and monotonous strategies of existing RLbased automated penetration testing methods make them less effective in practical *** this paper,we present CLAP(Coverage-Based Reinforcement Learning to Automate Penetration Testing),an RL penetration testing agent that provides comprehensive network security assessments with diverse adversary testing behaviours on a massive *** employs a novel neural network,namely the coverage mechanism,to address the enormous and growing action spaces in large *** also utilizes a Chebyshev decomposition critic to identify various adversary strategies and strike a balance between *** results across various scenarios demonstrate that CLAP outperforms state-of-the-art methods,by further reducing attack operations by nearly 35%.CLAP also provides enhanced training efficiency and stability and can effectively perform pen-testing over large-scale networks with up to 500 ***,the proposed agent is also able to discover pareto-dominant strategies that are both diverse and effective in achieving multiple objectives.

The world population continues to increase with a large proportion of this increase happening in Africa just as predicated by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation. To meet the demand of feeding this increasing population, innovative farming practices are being developed to increase the yield of the major stable food supply. This research developed a computer vision and control algorithm on a quadcopter for farm surveillance, crop protection from the invasion of pest, early disease detection as well as crop yield estimation. A process of developing a model capable of detecting and classifying these pests in the environment was presented in this study. The process involves selecting, preprocess and transforming the sensed data from a vision sensor to train classification algorithm and to detect and track object of interest in the environment. This study addresses a notable research gap in computer vision, control systems, big data analytics, and robotics, specifically within the context of smart farming. It primarily utilizes conventional learning algorithms, including Artificial Neural Networks and Support Vector Machines, typically found in widely-used commercial software. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

The widespread adoption of AI-Generated Content (AIGC) has captured remarkable interests from academia and industry. However, this advancement brings forth challenges in data ownership, as emphasized by the General Data Protection Regulation’s right to be forgotten. The right to be forgotten allows participants to erase their data contributions from well-trained AIGC models. Training AIGC models demands an extensive amount of data and computations, often surpassing the capabilities of individual participants. As a solution, Federated Learning (FL) is employed to collaboratively train an AIGC model without sharing raw data directly. To protect the right to be forgotten in FL, "federated unlearning" has been introduced to eradicate the data contributions of unlearning participants from fully trained AIGC models, achieved by deleting historical model updates. However, given that historical updates are distributed among various participants, they may still hold contributions from the unlearning participants. This presents a challenge to the trustworthiness of federated unlearning. In this paper, we first provide an overview of both centralized and federated learning and unlearning methods. We survey relevant works and classify four main categories for federated unlearning. Subsequently, we introduce a comprehensive decentralized unlearning architecture designed for trustworthy AIGC services. To address the challenge of participants retaining historical contributions from unlearning participants, we integrate a coded computing-based interaction mechanism, ensuring both scalability and security. We further present a case study using NanoGPT to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework for decentralized unlearning. We conclude by identifying potential future research directions. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

Analyzing sequential data is crucial in many domains, particularly due to the abundance of data collected from the Internet of Things paradigm. Time series classification, the task of categorizing sequential data, has gained prominence, with machine learning approaches demonstrating remarkable performance on public benchmark datasets. However, progress has primarily been in designing architectures for learning representations from raw data at fixed (or ideal) time scales, which can fail to generalize to longer sequences. This work introduces a compositional representation learning approach trained on statistically coherent components extracted from sequential data. Based on a multi-scale change space, an unsupervised approach is proposed to segment the sequential data into chunks with similar statistical properties. A sequence-based encoder model is trained in a multi-task setting to learn compositional representations from these temporal components for time series classification. We demonstrate its effectiveness through extensive experiments on publicly available time series classification benchmarks. Evaluating the coherence of segmented components shows its competitive performance on the unsupervised segmentation task. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Designing a skilled soccer team for RoboCup: exploring skill-set-primitives through reinforcement learning

The RoboCup 3D soccer simulation league serves as a competitive platform for showcasing innovation in autonomous humanoid robot agents through simulated soccer matches. Our team, FC Portugal, developed a new codebase from scratch in Python after RoboCup 2021. The team’s performance relies on a set of skills centered around novel unifying primitives and a custom, symmetry-extended version of the proximal policy optimization algorithm. Our methods have been thoroughly tested in official RoboCup matches, where FC Portugal has won the last two main competitions, in 2022 and 2023. This paper presents our training framework, as well as a timeline of skills developed using our skill-set-primitives, which considerably improve the sample efficiency and stability of skills, and motivate seamless transitions. We start with a significantly fast Sprint-Kick developed in 2021 and progress to the most recent skill set, including a multi-purpose omnidirectional walk, a dribble with unprecedented ball control, a solid kick, and a push skill. The push addresses low-level collision scenarios and high-level strategies to increase ball possession. We address the resource-intensive nature of this task through an innovative multi-agent learning approach. Finally, we release the team’s codebase to the RoboCup community, providing other teams with a robust and modern foundation upon which they can build new features. © The Author(s) 2025.

While promising results have been achieved in weakly-supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS), limited supervision from image-level tags inevitably induces discriminative reliance and spurious relations between target classes and background regions. Thus, Class Activation Map (CAM) usually tends to activate discriminative object regions and falsely includes lots of class-related backgrounds. Without pixel-level supervisions, it could be very difficult to enlarge the foreground activation and suppress those false activation of background regions. In this paper, we propose a novel framework of Cross Language Image Matching with Automatic Context Discovery (CLIMS++), based on the recently introduced Contrastive Language-Image Pre-training (CLIP) model, for WSSS. The core idea of our framework is to introduce natural language supervision to activate more complete object regions and suppress class-related background regions in CAM. In particular, we design object, background region, and text label matching losses to guide the model to excite more reasonable object regions of each category. In addition, we propose to automatically find spurious relations between foreground categories and backgrounds, through which a background suppression loss is designed to suppress the activation of class-related backgrounds. The above designs enable the proposed CLIMS++ to generate a more complete and compact activation map for the target objects. Extensive experiments on PASCAL VOC 2012 and MS COCO 2014 datasets show that our CLIMS++ significantly outperforms the previous state-of-the-art methods. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Quantum pseudorandom state generators (PRSGs) have stimulated exciting developments in recent years. A PRSG, on a fixed initial (e.g., all-zero) state, produces an output state that is computationally indistinguishable from a Haar random state. However, pseudorandomness of the output state is not guaranteed on other initial states. In fact, known PRSG constructions provably fail on some initial states. In this work, we propose and construct quantum Pseudorandom State Scramblers (PRSSs), which can produce a pseudorandom state on an arbitrary initial state. In the information-theoretical setting, we obtain a scrambler which maps an arbitrary initial state to a distribution of quantum states that is close to Haar random in total variation distance. As a result, our scrambler exhibits a dispersing property. Loosely, it can span an ϵ-net of the state space. This significantly strengthens what standard PRSGs can induce, as they may only concentrate on a small region of the state space provided that the average output state approximates a Haar random state. Our PRSS construction develops a parallel extension of the famous Kac’s walk, and we show that it mixes exponentially faster than the standard Kac’s walk. This constitutes the core of our proof. We also describe a few applications of PRSSs. While our PRSS construction assumes a post-quantum one-way function, PRSSs are potentially a weaker primitive and can be separated from one-way functions in a relativized world similar to standard PRSGs. © International Association for Cryptologic Research 2025.

Genetic programming hyperheuristic (GPHH) has recently become a promising methodology for large-scale dynamic path planning (LDPP) since it can produce reusable heuristics rather than disposable solutions. However, in this methodology, the extracted local and decentralized heuristic for agents that lack a global systemic view sometimes may be problematic. Therefore, a new challenge is to strike a balance between conciseness to improve generalization ability and incorporation of more global information to obtain better performance. In this work, we target the LDPP problem and propose a communication learning mechanism (ComLGP) for GPHH to address the above difficulties. In ComLGP, a communication function is introduced to serve as a communication protocol and exist in the form of an extra terminal in GPHH. Compared to the classic terminals which are fixed in genetic programing, this communication function undergoes optimization along with the evolutionary process of GPHH. In this way, the communication function can be learned which enables agents to communicate without a predefined communication protocol. Then, a caching and lazy updating mechanism for ComLGP is presented to accelerate the calculation of communication content. Last, we verified our method on 22 scenarios including two real world road networks. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed ComLGP can successfully learn to communicate. Although in the absence of any manually designed communication features, ComLGP is capable of achieving performance competitive to the state-of-the-art method that employs a predefined communication protocol and outperforms the remaining compared methods in most scenarios. © 2020 IEEE.

A novel surrogate model with deep learning for predicting spacial-temporal pressure in coalbed methane reservoirs

Coalbed methane (CBM) is a vital unconventional energy resource, and predicting its spatiotemporal pressure dynamics is crucial for efficient development strategies. This paper proposes a novel deep learning–based data-driven surrogate model, AxialViT-ConvLSTM, which integrates AxialAttention Vision Transformer, ConvLSTM, and an enhanced loss function to predict pressure dynamics in CBM reservoirs. The results showed that the model achieves a mean square error of 0.003, a learned perceptual image patch similarity of 0.037, a structural similarity of 0.979, and an R² of 0.982 between predictions and actual pressures, indicating excellent performance. The model also demonstrates strong robustness and accuracy in capturing spatial–temporal pressure features. © 2025 Sichuan Petroleum Administration
