By introducing virtual content onto a regular tabletop, augmented reality (AR) offers a compelling display medium for enhancing tabletop games. Coupled with tangible user interfaces, it constitutes a truly novel environment for games. Our research investigates the possibilities and constraints for succesful game design, starting with principles drawn fom tabletop and conventional computer games, and moving towards designs unique to AR. Our first major game, AR Tankwar, was recently demonstrated at GenCon Indy 2005 to over 300 players and many more spectators. This paper presents a short overview of AR Tankwar along with results from questionnaires and player discussion at the convention.

The main challenge in the area of reinforcement learning is scaling up to larger and more complex problems. Aiming at the scaling problem of reinforcement learning, a scalable reinforcement learning method, DCS-SRL, is proposed on the basis of divide-and-conquer strategy, and its convergence is proved. In this method, the learning problem in large state space or continuous state space is decomposed into multiple smaller subproblems. Given a specific learning algorithm, each subproblem can be solved independently with limited available resources. In the end, component solutions can be recombined to obtain the desired result. To ad- dress the question of prioritizing subproblems in the scheduler, a weighted priority scheduling algorithm is proposed. This scheduling algorithm ensures that computation is focused on regions of the problem space which are expected to be maximally productive. To expedite the learning process, a new parallel method, called DCS-SPRL, is derived from combining DCS-SRL with a parallel scheduling architecture. In the DCS-SPRL method, the subproblems will be distributed among processors that have the capacity to work in parallel. The experimental results show that learning based on DCS-SPRL has fast convergence speed and good scalability.

software product line (SPL) scoping is important for planning upfront investment. One challenge with scoping comes from inaccuracies in estimated parameters and uncertainty in environment. In this paper, a method to incorporate uncertainty in SPL scoping optimization and its application to generate robust solutions is proposed. We model scoping optimization as a multiobjective problem with profit and stability as heuristics. To evaluate our proposal, a number of experiments are conducted. Analysis of results show that both performance stability and feasibility stability were improved providing the product line manager enhanced decision-making support. There have been many demonstrations that the expressive power of Lisp can greatly simplify the process of writing numerical programs, but at the cost of reduced performance.[10][16] I show that by coupling Lisp's abstract, expressive style of programming with a compiler that uses partial evaluation, data abstractions can be eliminated at compile time, producing extremely high-performance code. For an important class of numerical programs, partial evaluation achieves order-of-magnitude speed-ups over conventional Lisp compilation technology. This approach has proven to be especially effective when used in conjunction with schedulers for VLIW and highly pipelined architectures, because the elimination of data structures and procedural abstractions exposes the low-level parallelism inherent in a computation.
