Lossy Compression: An Online Multi-Stage Technology for High-Fidelity Synchro-Waveform Measurements

Effective real-time monitoring and analysis of distributed grids necessitate the use of synchro-waveform measurements, which capture almost all high-frequency disturbances and transient phenomena. However, due to limitations in high-speed measurements and network bandwidth, it is challenging to transfer all high-fidelity synchro-waveforms losslessly and successfully. To cope with these challenges, a hybrid-based online multi-stage compression algorithm is proposed to significantly improve the compression efficiency for synchro-waveform measurements. Initially, the multiple discrete Wavelet transformation is deployed to deconstruct the waveform components. The delta encoding is further developed to decrease the magnitude. In conjunction with the Lempel-Ziv-Markov chain, the hybrid compression algorithm is implemented to achieve real-time compression for the synchro-waveform measurements. Moreover, an innovative error index that synergizes the time and frequency domain error and correlation is formulated to evaluate the waveform distortion. By integrating compression ratio, suitable parameters can be optimally selected. Finally, the simulation, laboratory experiments, as well as field tests across a spectrum of sampling frequencies and time intervals are conducted to substantiate the efficacy of the proposed method. The outcomes demonstrated that a compression ratio of approximately 15.5 and 17.83 can be reached for 0.5 s and 1 s data under both offline and online scenarios, which equates to a substantial 93.5% to 94.39% reduction in data storage requirements. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

RandoMix: a mixed sample data augmentation method with multiple mixed modes

Data augmentation plays a crucial role in enhancing the robustness and performance of machine learning models across various domains. In this study, we introduce a novel mixed-sample data augmentation method called RandoMix. RandoMix is specifically designed to simultaneously address robustness and diversity challenges. It leverages a combination of linear and mask mixed modes, introducing flexibility in candidate selection and weight adjustments. We evaluate the effectiveness of RandoMix on diverse datasets, including CIFAR-10/100, Tiny-ImageNet, ImageNet, and Google Speech Commands. Our results demonstrate its superior erformance compared to existing techniques such as Mixup, CutMix, Fmix, and ResizeMix. Notably, RandoMix excels in enhancing model robustness against adversarial noise, natural noise, and sample occlusion. The comprehensive experimental results and insights into parameter tuning underscore the potential of RandoMix as a versatile and effective data augmentation method. Multimodal domain adaptation (MMDA) aims to transfer knowledge across different domains that contain multimodal data. Current methods typically assume that both the source and target domains have paired multimodal data with the same modalities, allowing for direct knowledge transfer between corresponding types of data. However, in certain applications, the source domain benefits from advanced sensors and equipment, capturing more modalities than those available in the target domain. As a result, the information from the source modalities may not strongly align with that of the target modalities. This weak correlation hinders the effective utilization of all source data for the target domain. To address this challenge, we propose a weakly correlated multimodal domain adaptation (WCMMDA) method for pattern classification. WCMMDA is designed to acquire the modality-independent and category-related knowledge from the source domain, enabling the full utilization of available source modalities for effective knowledge transfer. Specifically, modality-invariant features are first extracted from the multimodal data to bridge the heterogeneity gap within each domain. Subsequently, domain-invariant features are further learned from these modality-invariant features to align the feature distributions across the source and target domains. A source-specific classifier is employed here, which predicts pseudo-labels for the target data and enables the feature extractor to explore category-related information in source features. Finally, a target-specific classifier is trained using the pseudolabeled target data, where highly reliable pseudolabels are selected based on confidence to improve classification performance. Extensive experiments are performed on the real-world multimodal datasets to demonstrate the superiority of WCMMDA. © 2020 IEEE.

To mitigate the rising energy costs in edge computing, edge servers (ESs) can receive revenues from reducing their energy usage by contracting with virtual power plant (VPP). ESs also respond to user equipment (UE) by providing computation offloading services. However, such two-layer coordinated trading of computation offloading and energy management in a VPP-ES-UE architecture should address the information asymmetry issue and uncertain task arrivals, posing challenges to maximizing the stakeholders' utility. In this paper, we formulate the two-layer coordinated trading as a hierarchical contracting problem, which addresses the information asymmetry using two contract models. We design a VPP-ES energy contract on a large timescale and an ES-UE computation contract on a small timescale, where ESs need to coordinate the future task arrivals under the energy reduction target assigned by VPP. We construct a two-timescale virtual queue to achieve the energy reduction goal by the long-term queue stability constraint and employ Lyapunov optimization to transform the original problem into an online optimization problem without requiring future information. An online two-timescale hierarchical contract optimization algorithm is proposed to solve the transformed problem. The simulation results demonstrate that our method achieves higher social welfare compared to other benchmarks. © 2013 IEEE.

Adaptive dynamic graphs for anomaly detection via inter- and intra-diffusion

Commonly adopted anomaly detection frameworks in security systems typically rely on natural time cycles to construct a single dynamic graph, which enables the unified detection of diverse anomalies. However, different anomalous behaviors exhibit distinct temporal distribution patterns, causing behavior patterns to fragment across graph snapshots. This leads to the behavior pattern confounding problem and complicates the balancing of the heterophily ratio and the anomaly proportion within each snapshot. We formally analyze the causes of this issue and propose DiffGAD, a dynamic graph diffusion-based anomaly detection framework. By utilizing heat diffusion, we identify time windows that capture the most discriminative behavior patterns for constructing adaptive dynamic graphs. Based on this, we enable inter- and intra-diffusion through a dynamized Perona-Malik (PM) equation. Ultimately, anomaly detection is achieved by penalizing similarity to the natural time cycle-based dynamic graph. Experiments in network intrusion and anonymous traffic detection scenarios show that DiffGAD outperforms state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods and detects anomalies effectively even at a low proportion. Compared to the best-performing baselines, it mitigates the performance drop in unified detection by over 50% relative to separate detection. Highly Robust and Diverse Coverless Image Steganography Against Passive and Active Steganalysis

To avoid the pixel modification traces left by steganography from being detected by passive steganalysis, and to prevent the hidden data from being destroyed by active steganalysis attacks, Coverless Image Steganography (CIS) that does not modify pixels has attracted widespread attention. However, most existing CIS methods are limited in their maximum capacity due to insufficient diversity in their hash sequences. In addition, these methods struggle to maintain high robustness against both geometric and non-geometric attacks simultaneously. To address these two issues, a new coverless image steganography method is proposed to enhance CIS methods’ applicability, security, and robustness in highly insecure networks. During the hiding process, hash sequences are generated by a SHA-256 algorithm that integrates inter-block and inter-channel fusion, providing higher diversity than other CIS methods. Consequently, the proposed CIS method achieves higher capacity on publicly available datasets. During the extraction process, an evaluation metric that combines visual and histogram similarity is designed to improve the accuracy of inverse image retrieval. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed CIS method achieves capacity increases of 26.73% and 38.34% over other CIS methods on the VOC and COCO datasets, respectively. Moreover, this method exhibits nearly 100% robustness against common active steganalysis. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Enhancing Elderly Care with Socially Assistive Robots: A Holistic Framework for Mobility, Interaction, and Well-Being

The global elderly population is projected to double by 2050, creating challenges in mobility, social isolation, and cognitive decline. Socially Assistive Robots (SARs) offer a promising solution, yet gaps remain in integrating mobility assistance with cognitive and emotional support. The research developed a comprehensive framework for SARs, emphasizing user-centered design, technological innovation, and cultural adaptability. A mixed-methods approach was employed with 200 participants aged 60+, from diverse settings, including rehab centers, retired groups, old age communities and nursing homes. Results demonstrated a 33.3% improvement in mobility scores and a 40% increase in social engagement. Health metrics revealed a 22% reduction in falls, a 15% rise in physical activity, and a 90% user satisfaction rate. Gender and age differences were evident, with males aged 71+ showing higher mobility improvements (35.6%) and females aged 71+ reporting the highest satisfaction (93%). Long-term data indicated sustained benefits, with participants retaining 80% of mobility gains and social engagement levels 38% above baseline after six months. These findings highlight the importance of culturally sensitive and user-centered SAR designs in promoting elderly well-being. The research offers a robust foundation for integrating SARs into elderly care systems, emphasizing adaptability, sustainability, and ethical considerations for future implementation. © 2013 IEEE.

Ethical Aspects of ChatGPT in software engineering Research

ChatGPT can improve software engineering (SE) research practices by offering efficient, accessible information analysis, and synthesis based on natural language interactions. However, ChatGPT could bring ethical challenges, encompassing plagiarism, privacy, data security, and the risk of generating biased or potentially detrimental data. This research aims to fill the given gap by elaborating on the key elements: motivators, demotivators, and ethical principles of using ChatGPT in SE research. To achieve this objective, we conducted a literature survey, identified the mentioned elements, and presented their relationships by developing a taxonomy. Furthermore, the identified literature-based elements (motivators, demotivators, and ethical principles) were empirically evaluated by conducting a comprehensive questionnaire-based survey involving SE researchers. In addition, we employed an interpretive structure modeling approach to analyze the relationships between the ethical principles of using ChatGPT in SE research and develop a level-based decision model. We further conducted a cross-impact matrix multiplication applied to classification analysis to create a cluster-based decision model. These models aim to help SE researchers devise effective strategies for ethically integrating ChatGPT into SE research by following the identified principles by adopting the motivators and addressing the demotivators. The findings of this study will establish a benchmark for incorporating ChatGPT services in SE research with an emphasis on ethical considerations. © 2020 IEEE.

Intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) is a life-threatening condition that requires rapid and accurate diagnosis to improve treatment outcomes and patient survival rates. Recent advancements in supervised deep learning have greatly improved the analysis of medical images, but often rely on extensive datasets with high-quality annotations, which are costly, time-consuming, and require medical expertise to prepare. To mitigate the need for large amounts of expert-prepared segmentation data, we have developed a novel weakly supervised ICH segmentation method that utilizes the YOLO object detection model and an uncertainty-rectified Segment Anything Model (SAM). In addition, we have proposed a novel point prompt generator for this model to further improve segmentation results with YOLO-predicted bounding box prompts. Our approach achieved a high accuracy of 0.933 and an AUC of 0.796 in ICH detection, along with a mean Dice score of 0.629 for ICH segmentation, outperforming existing weakly supervised and popular supervised (UNet and Swin-UNETR) approaches. Overall, the proposed method provides a robust and accurate alternative to the more commonly used supervised techniques for ICH quantification without requiring refined segmentation ground truths during model training. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Emergency response is any systematic response to unexpected events that pose potential risk and/or damage to human life or property. Outbreak of virus, leak of poisonous chemicals, and terrorist attack are just a few examples. The goal of emergency response is to minimize the adverse impact of an incident to society and the environment. To guarantee the implementation of its handling procedure, adequate resources must be available. The success of emergency response also relies on the timeliness of related rescue actions. This paper presents resource-oriented timed workflow nets for the modeling and analysis of the resource requirements in responding to an emergency incident, as well as the time required to complete prescribed response tasks. This new model provides a formal basis for process designers and practitioners to examine the readiness and efficiency of their emergency plans. The presented algorithm can be applied to workflows with sequential, concurrent, decision-making and repetitive structures. A case study on chemical spill response is presented to illustrate the application of the proposed model. © 2013 IEEE.
