In the realm of healthcare, trauma, aging, and diseases like diabetes can cause a variety of abnormalities in human eyes. Diabetic retinopathy stands out as a prevalent global cause of blindness. Early identification and diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy is essential for prompt treatment and blindness prevention. The analysis of medical images can contribute to the identification of diabetic retinopathy, assisting in the diagnostic process. This study uses a deep learning (DL) model, ResNet-18, to identify diabetic retinopathy. The dataset used in this study acquired from Kaggle is divided into training and testing. ResNet-18 accomplished a training accuracy of 99.91% and a testing accuracy of 96.65%. The findings demonstrate the effectiveness of utilizing DL models like ResNet-18 for the early identification of diabetic retinopathy, potentially revolutionizing the screening process in clinical settings. By streamlining the diagnostic process, this proposed model has the potential to significantly enhance early intervention and treatment strategies, ultimately mitigating the risk of blindness in diabetic patients. Incorporating such technology into the healthcare system could improve patient outcomes and resource allocation. © 2024 IEEE.

In the last few years, combining multiple algorithms to improve the performance of machine learning models has been a common practice. However, its application to stress detection still needs to be explored. This paper uses a stacking ensemble technique to introduce a novel stress classification approach using electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. Specifically, the study evaluates the effectiveness of various classifiers, including Random Forest (RF), K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Gradient Boosting (GB), Naive Bayes (NB), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Logistic Regression (LR), Decision Tree (DT), and Adaboost (AB), individually and in combination with RF as the base model, for stress classification tasks. The paper uses the SAM40 Dataset consisting of 32-channel EEG data to extract features in time and frequency domains for stress classification. The results show that the stacked classifiers outperform single classifiers, with RF + KNN providing the highest accuracy of 98.55%. The findings suggest that a stacked classifier is a promising approach for stress classification, as it can leverage the strengths of different algorithms and improve generalization performance. It holds promising future applicability in personalized stress management, healthcare interventions, and addressing societal concerns related to mental well-being. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Holey Latin square (HLS) is a special combinatorial design of interest to mathematicians and is helpful in the construction of many important structures in design theory. In this paper, we investigate the existence of HLSs satisfying the seven kinds of identities with automated reasoning techniques. We formulate this problem as propositional logic formulae. Since state-of-the-art SAT solvers have difficulty solving many HLS problems, we further propose a symmetry breaking method, called partially ordered HLS (POHLS), to eliminate isomorphic solutions. We have achieved the following goals through experimental evaluation. First, we have solved a dozen of open problems interested by mathematicians. Second, we identify the impact of different encodings. Third, we demonstrate the advantages of SAT solver over other FOL-based solvers. Fourth, we show that the proposed POHLS reduction can improve the efficiency of solving and find the complementarity between two types of symmetry breaking techniques. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2024.

Image matting is a technique used to separate the foreground of an image from the background, which estimates an alpha matte that indicates pixel-wise degree of transparency. To precisely extract target objects and address the ambiguity of solutions in image matting, many existing approaches employ a trimap or background image provided by the user as additional input to guide the matting process. This article introduces a novel matting paradigm termed text-guided image matting, utilizing a textual description of the foreground object as a guiding element. In contrast to trimap or background-based methods, text-guided matting offers a user-friendly interface, providing semantic clues for the objects of interest. Moreover, it facilitates batch processing across multiple frames featuring the same objects of interest. The proposed text-guided matting approach is implemented through a deep neural network (NN) comprising three-stage cross-modal feature fusion and two-step alpha matte prediction. Experimental results on portrait matting demonstrate the competitive performance of our text-guided approach compared to existing trimap-based and background-based methods. © 2020 IEEE.

Mainstream approaches for unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) learn domain-invariant representations to address the domain shift. Recently, self-training has been used in UDA, which exploits pseudo-labels for unlabeled target domains. However, the pseudo-labels can be unreliable due to distribution shifts between domains, severely impairing the model performance. To address this problem, we propose a novel self-training framework-Self-Training with Label-Feature-Consistency (ST-LFC), which selects reliable target pseudo-labels via label-level and feature-level voting consistency principle. The former means target pseudo-labels generated by a source-trained classifier and the latter means the nearest source-class to the target in feature space. In addition, ST-LFC reduces the negative effects of unreliable predictions through entropy minimization. Empirical results indicate that ST-LFC significantly improves over the state-of-the-arts on a variety of benchmark datasets. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

As the global population continues to age, there is a concurrent rise in the number of individuals experiencing cognitive impairment and dementia, underscoring the critical necessity to address their hospice needs and quality of life concerns. Numerous studies have underscored the positive impact of exposure to outdoor environments on their overall condition and well-being. However, cognitive challenges often hinder their capacity to perform basic tasks independently, necessitating frequent assistance from onsite professionals. Complicating matters further, the complexity of outdoor settings often results in difficulties in identifying and recognizing personnel. This paper introduces Profinder, a system designed to assist individuals with cognitive impairment in identifying occupational personnel at specific outdoor locations and accessing essential assistance. Utilizing advanced deep learning techniques, Profinder seamlessly integrates foreground and background information, incorporates attention mechanisms, and harnesses siamese networks for efficient information decoupling, thereby achieving occupational recognition on smart mobile devices with an accuracy rate exceeding 90%. Additionally, a meticulously curated dataset dedicated to occupation recognition was devel0oped to facilitate and validate this research endeavor. By providing a robust auxiliary tool for individuals with cognitive impairment, this research endeavors to enhance their autonomy and overall quality of life, while also laying a solid foundation for further exploration and innovation in this burgeoning field, both within academia and industry. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Nowadays, gas leak detection equipment in the workplace, schools, and homes plays a vital role in protecting public safety. Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) leaks are one of the most serious issues in the kitchen because they raise the possibility of an explosion. LPG is the main cooking fuel in Libya. Multiple incidences of household fires, injuries, and deaths have been recorded in Libya as a result of LPG leakage and explosions, as the country's citizens do not have gas leak-detecting systems. This paper aims to present the design and implementation of a smart gas leak detection system based on Arduino. In this system, an Arduino Uno microcontroller with an MQ6 sensor was used to detect gas leakage, an air fan motor to reduce gas concentration by ventilating the air, and GSM as a wireless communication method to notify users via SMS. The proposed system identifies three gas leakage risk levels, each Including its unique scenario. Level one is low-risk, the user is notified Unhealthy status of the dwelling due to gas leakage. level two is medium-risk, the user's friends are informed about the unsafety status due to gas leakage in the user's home. Level three is high-risk;the nearest firefighting organizations are informed of the hazard status. The experimental findings demonstrate that the system is capable of efficiently detecting gas and protecting individuals from a range of undesired situations, as well as being useful in reducing resource and human life losses. © 2024 IEEE.

Although research on communication in multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) has achieved some progress, the vulnerability of the communication mechanism in MARL caused by adversarial communication messages generated by malicious agents has not been well investigated. Existing works about adversarial communication messages in MARL focus on the black-box scenario where the attacker cannot access any model information about the multi-agent system (MAS). But a more practical setting is the grey-box scenario where the attacker can access the model information about its controlled agent. To the best of our knowledge, there has not been any work investigating grey-box attacks on communication in MARL. In this paper, we propose the first grey-box attack method on communication in MARL, which is called victim-simulation based adversarial attack (VSA). At each timestep, the attacker simulates a victim attacked by other regular agents' communication messages and generates adversarial perturbations on its received communication messages. The aggregation of these perturbations is sent by the attacker to the regular agents through communication messages, which will induce non-optimal actions of the regular agents. Experimental results show that VSA can effectively degrade the performance of the MAS on Predator-Prey. The findings in this paper will make researchers aware of the grey-box attack in MARL. © 2023 International Foundation for Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems (***). All rights reserved.

Counterfeit drugs are fake medicines that are potentially harmful for health. Safeguarding the integrity of pharmaceutical distribution plays a crucial role in preventing the circulation of counterfeit drugs. Traditional drug supply chain systems have no effective mechanism to ensure the traceability and integrity of the drug supply chain process. Various ICT-based solutions have been adopted previously and numerous regulations were passed by drug regulatory authorities to ensure interoperable and traceable drug distribution process. However, these solutions could not guarantee a tamper-proof history of supply chain process. Blockchain technology has gained traction in many diverse fields including real-estate, identity management, digital voting, healthcare, etc. Therefore, we have proposed a decentralized framework to insure the authenticity and traceability of the drugs. Moreover, this study presents an overview of how blockchain technology can be employed to counter the fake medicines circulation by embedding the traceability in drug supply chain process. Comparison of various blockchain-based solutions and open research challenges in this regard are also presented. © 2023 IEEE.

Thousands of women worldwide are diagnosed with breast cancer yearly, which may be fatal if not treated. The diagnosis of the condition may take years, by which time the patient has little choice except to have the affected breast removed. Early diagnosis and treatments are the best ways to stop this disease's spread. In this study, the authors presented a computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) system to assist in breast cancer diagnosis. The study uses the Wisconsin breast cancer dataset to classify benign and malignant data. For the classification, three pre-trained Deep learning algorithms: Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), were used. A novel CNN model that exceeds the performance efficiency of three pre-trained models and requires minimal compilation time is proposed. A number of evaluation matrices are used to analyze the models' classification abilities. Upon closer inspection, it has been established that the proposed CNN model outperforms CNN, LSTM, and MLP models with validation accuracy of 97.85%. CNN and LSTM performed with accuracies of 94.12% with the Adagrad optimizer and 93.5% with the Adam optimizer, respectively. Furthermore, MLP performance with 92.44% accuracy using the Adam optimizer. The proposed CNN model achieves the lowest Loss value and compilation time. In addition, the models' recall value, precision, and f1-score are computed to pick out the most effective model for diagnosing breast cancer on numeric data. © 2023 IEEE.
