In this panel, we will address questions regarding the development and execution of one type of industry-academic collaboration - corporate-sponsored projects. As representatives of programs at both public and private institutions, we will address a set of questions related to these programs. This paper explores the Serverless First strategy in cloud application development. Serverless computing has gained popularity due to its flexibility and scalability. In our work, we provide a systematic review of the literature about the Serverless paradigm in cloud computing and an evaluation of the advantages of this approach by performing a comparative analysis among three ways for the implementation of an application: AWS Lambda, AWS Lambda with Chalice framework, and the traditional form using the Flask framework. The literature review results show the gains in scaling, cost reduction, and ease of maintenance achieved with the Serverless First strategy. However, some limitations and challenges were also highlighted, such as the greater complexity of the environment, less control over resources, resource limitations imposed by the cloud provider, and difficulties in debugging and managing the infrastructure. The case study demonstrates in practice that the Chalice framework provided the most straightforward and rapid implementation, the AWS Lambda without Chalice offered greater flexibility and control, and the Flask version allowed local testing and total control but required more manual setup and lacked automatic scalability.

Within any incremental development paradigm, there exists a tension between the desire to deliver value to the customer early and the desire to reduce cost by avoiding architectural refactoring in subsequent releases. What is lacking, however, is quantifiable guidance that highlights the potential benefits and risks of choosing one or the other of these alternatives or a blend of both strategies. In this paper, we assert that the ability to quantify architecture quality with measurable criteria provides engineering guidance for iterative release planning. We demonstrate the use of propagation cost as a proxy for architectural health with dependency analysis of design structure and domain mapping matrices as a quantifiable basis for iteration planning.

This paper develops a systems engineering-based framework to assist in the design of an online engineering course. Specifically, the purpose of the framework is to provide a structured methodology for the design, development and delivery of a fully online course, either brand new or modified from an existing face-to-face course. The main strength Systems engineering provides to online course design and delivery is the holistic worldview and the life-cycle approach. Adopting the life-cycle approach ensures a smooth transition for faculty members who are in the process of modifying their curriculum to meet student and industry demands. The effectiveness and function of the framework is discussed with respect to results from a brand new fully online course that was designed and developed for the engineering Management program at University of Houston Clear Lake, including a survey of students on Blackboard efficiency. The paper concludes with a discussion of implications of the framework for online education and future research.
