The increasing demand for software engineering professionals, in particular Project Managers, and the popularization of the Web platform as a catalyst of human relations nowadays has made this platform interesting to be used for training this type of professional. In consonance to that, we have observed the dissemination of the use of games as an attractive instrument in the process of teaching and learning. However the project of a web-based instructional game that fulfills all pedagogical and technical requirements for training a project manager is not a trivial task. There is a gap between the theoretical concepts that are normally learned in traditional courses and the practical aspects required by the real tasks. In an attempt to contributes to that problem, this paper proposes the use of a persistent browser-based game intended for Risk Management as a component support in qualifying process of new professionals of Project Management. The game provides to the player some experience in a real context of Project Management, where new challenges are frequently posed to the enterprises. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

This work shows a simulated fuzzy logic controller used for wheelchair control based on head and neck movements detected by Polymer Optical Fiber (POF) and Inertial Movement Unit (IMU). The first controller uses as input signals from head movements detected by an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), and the second controller uses input neck movements detected by a Polymer Optical Fiber (POF) pressure line sensor. The accuracy attained by the classification system to detect head and neck movements was 99.52% using a Common Average Reference (CAR) filter who minimizes uncorrelated sources of signal and noise through averaging, while eliminating sources of noise common to all sites, and a Support Vector Machine (SVM) to classify body postures. The best accuracy using cross-validation was 99.16% using a k-Nearest Neighbor (kNN) algorithm. Future works are related to the implementation of the controllers, in real-time, in the wheelchair as well as the inclusion of a user’s posture monitoring system. Also, a Graphical User Interface (GUI) to guide the user will be developed. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper explores the Serverless First strategy in cloud application development. Serverless computing has gained popularity due to its flexibility and scalability. In our work, we provide a systematic review of the literature about the Serverless paradigm in cloud computing and an evaluation of the advantages of this approach by performing a comparative analysis among three ways for the implementation of an application: AWS Lambda, AWS Lambda with Chalice framework, and the traditional form using the Flask framework. The literature review results show the gains in scaling, cost reduction, and ease of maintenance achieved with the Serverless First strategy. However, some limitations and challenges were also highlighted, such as the greater complexity of the environment, less control over resources, resource limitations imposed by the cloud provider, and difficulties in debugging and managing the infrastructure. The case study demonstrates in practice that the Chalice framework provided the most straightforward and rapid implementation, the AWS Lambda without Chalice offered greater flexibility and control, and the Flask version allowed local testing and total control but required more manual setup and lacked automatic scalability.

Within any incremental development paradigm, there exists a tension between the desire to deliver value to the customer early and the desire to reduce cost by avoiding architectural refactoring in subsequent releases. What is lacking, however, is quantifiable guidance that highlights the potential benefits and risks of choosing one or the other of these alternatives or a blend of both strategies. In this paper, we assert that the ability to quantify architecture quality with measurable criteria provides engineering guidance for iterative release planning. We demonstrate the use of propagation cost as a proxy for architectural health with dependency analysis of design structure and domain mapping matrices as a quantifiable basis for iteration planning.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of web-based MS Power Point education on primary school students. Educational course material has been developed for web based learning environment. It has web based content of MS Power Point 2003 program. Also, quality of educational material is evaluated by taking into the account the ISO9241Usability of software standards. For this purpose, Xerox Usability Survey is conducted to the 83 primary school students. Statistical analysis shows that achievement of the students increased via the web based content.

The ATT&CK MITRE framework serves as an expansive repository of adversary tactics, techniques, and procedures. Given the sheer volume of these intricate attack patterns, the conventional manual navigation method proves to be time-intensive and less efficient for security analysts. As a remedy, there arises a compelling necessity to present the rich content encapsulated within the ATT&CK MITRE repository through interactive visualizations. In this paper ATT&CKViz an interactive web-based cyber-Attack patterns visualization tool is presented that aims to empower security analysts with the ability to effortlessly explore the repository from diverse angles, which facilitates deep insights into cyber threats. The aim is to understand cyber threat efficiently with a timely response. The empirical evaluations depict that effectiveness and user-friendliness of ATT&CKViz. © 2024 IEEE.

Source code comments play a critical role in software development by facilitating issue resolution and reducing maintenance time and cost. However, the impact of code comments, particularly those aiding program comprehension, on expediting issue resolution remains insufficiently explored. This study investigates the impact of code comments on issue resolution time for issues related to pulling requests involving code maintenance. To this end, ten of the most popular Java repositories on GitHub were selected, and closed pull request-related issues were identified using a specific criterion. Comments were then extracted from classes modified by the pull requests, and a trained BERT model was utilized to classify them according to their usefulness. The percentage of comments relative to code size, the percentage of useful comments relative to all comments, and the average issue resolution time were computed and examined for correlations. The results indicate a negative correlation (-0.68) between the percentage of code comments in modified classes and the average issue resolution time. A stronger negative correlation (-0.73) was found between the percentage of useful code comments to all comments in modified classes and the average issue resolution time per class. These findings demonstrate that code with more comments, particularly useful ones, leads to faster issue resolution. This serves as a basis for further research into the impact of various fine-grained comment types on issue resolution time in different programming languages. Also, it can assist developers in writing more effective comments that accelerate bug-fixing and reduce software maintenance efforts. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents the design and construction of a low-cost combat robot named Artemis, developed for participation in the Robocore Experience 2024 competition. The project emphasizes the integration of cost-effective components and innovative methodologies to create a competitive robot. The ESP32 microcontroller was selected for its advantages in energy efficiency and connectivity, surpassing traditional platforms like Arduino. The construction process involved several phases, including planning, development, testing, correction, and performance evaluation, utilizing tools such as CAD software for design and 3D printing for fabrication. Key components included a DC motor, L298N H-bridge, and a LiPo battery, all chosen to optimize performance while adhering to budget constraints. The robot's design evolved through iterative testing and adjustments, ultimately leading to a successful competition debut. This work highlights the importance of resourcefulness and collaboration in robotics, showcasing how educational institutions can foster innovation in engineering projects.

Decision making in an organization is needed a system. Decision support system is a system that helps company management and education in decision making that provides information, modeling and analyzing data with the application of a method. The management, especially higher education, must maximize sophisticated technology. For example, to analyze scholarship data. Problems are found in manual data analysis so that human errors often occur in addition to using more time than the target, losing old data, resulting in inaccurate analysis of scholarship sustainability every semester. The research was conducted to overcome the problems that have been found by analyzing the existing data with the simple additive weighting method, building a system by applying the method and testing the system. The result of this research is to produce an application for the development of a decision support system in managing student data to determine the sustainability of the scholarship every semester. Applications that are built can help the management in managing scholarships.

One of the critical problems facing software industry today is the lack of appreciation of the full benefits that can be derived from software Verification and Validation (V&V) and an associated problem of shortage of adequately trained V&V practitioners. To address this situation, software V&V course curriculum is being improved at author's institution via a NSF-funded project. The basic objectives of this project are to improve software education to make it well aligned with academic research as well as industry best practices. In addition, it is aimed that the course material could also be used to enhance on-the-job professional training in SW industry settings, thereby helping to increase the pool of professionals with contemporary V&V knowledge and skills. The new course curriculum enhancement described in this paper is guided by academic research and industry best practices that focus on four specific V&V focus areas: requirements engineering, reviews, configuration management, and testing. Among many educational tools that are being developed to achieve project objectives, the work related to the development of case studies is described here. Historically, case studies have been as educational tools in business, law and medicine but not so much in software engineering. The hypothesis is that case studies would be effective educational tools to introduce real-world professional practices into the classroom which would help the students in identifying and solving problems, and develop a perspective on knowledge application. In this paper we describe a set of V&V related casestudies that we have drawn from industry experiences and developed them as pedagogical tools. These case-studies cover several important topics in S/W V&V domain such as software testing, legal issues in software, software consumer protection, and requirements from the customers' perspectives.
