This Research Paper presents the evaluation of an instrument to identify the impact of motivation and engagement factors in undergraduate students in computing. Although researches indicate a direct impact of motivation and engagement on student performance and retention, few studies have been found that address which factors are relevant in this process. The instrument is a questionnaire based on the compilation of several works of the literature containing 48 items divided into 6 groups: personal and demographic data, general perception about motivation, perception about the university, student behavior, perception about program and perception about classes/teachers. The questionnaire evaluation is based on a case study with 112 undergraduate students in software engineering. As a result, we found that the questionnaire can be considered reliable (Cronbach's alpha = 8904). Considering the validity of constructs, we found an acceptable degree of correlation between the most pair of items in each group (averaging 63%). We also found that the item-total correlation coefficient was only not adequate for one factor group, indicating satisfactory correlation for all other items. Finally, we found that the number of factors is coherent, but there are several items from different groups strongly correlated, indicating the need for a reorganization. © 2018 IEEE.

This Research to Practice Paper presents the results of the evaluation of pre-university factors that impact the initial motivation of undergraduate students in computing. Although there are studies in the literature that have investigated some previous factors, this paper replicates a previous work that aims to consolidate several pre-university factors and, as the main differential, uses the AMS (Academic Motivation Scale), a scale already consolidated in the literature to measure students' initial motivation, and evaluate the relation between motivation and candidate factors. We applied a questionnaire to 159 students from different computing programs in ten universities, which evaluates 20 factors divided into 4 groups: personal and demographic data, taste and knowledge of the program and area, computing experience, and school performance. To evaluate the correlation between factors and motivation, we used Spearman's coefficient, t-student test, and ANOVA to evaluate the correlation between factors and motivation. As main results, we found significant variation in the initial motivation according to following factors: taste for programming and technology, knowledge about the undergraduate program content, correct perception about computing professionals, knowledge and experience in computer programming, and general school performance. © 2018 IEEE.

In this paper, a new method of compound noun analysis is proposed. It uses decomposition model and unregistered words recognition. The latter contains loanword nouns, name nouns and place name. Loanword noun is recognized based on it's formed by syllables which have low use frequency in Korean syllable. Name noun is recognized based on the characteristics of Korean name and the repeatability of the certain amount of syllables. Place name is recognized by consulting place name dictionary based on the analysis of model that the place names appear. The experimental results for compound noun analysis have an average accuracy of 98.2%. The accuracy of loanword nouns recognition and name nouns recognition is 92% and 95% separately. © 2012 IEEE.

Bio-inspired algorithms are based on the collective behavior of interacting organisms and are used to solve or to approach efficient solutions for large optimization problems. This article evaluates a new parallel library of a family of bio-inspired algorithms. The library offers the implementation of some basic algorithms, being easily extensible through interfaces, and explores the parallelism using SIMD-type instructions. Evaluations of performances are presented using seven test functions applied to each of the implemented algorithms. The tests also allowed to show that parallel implementations offer higher performances in all cases, reaching up to 20 times for some functions.

This study examines the quality differences between AI-generated and human-generated code through an evaluation of multiple software quality metrics, including maintainability, complexity, and documentation. Using a dataset of 5,312 code samples—2,700 human-generated and 2,612 AI-generated—we applied machine learning techniques to classify and analyze the code based on these metrics. The results revealed that AI-generated code tends to excel in maintainability and documentation, demonstrating higher maintainability index scores and a higher ratio of comments. Additionally, AI-generated code often features simpler control structures, reflected in its lower cyclomatic complexity. In contrast, human-generated code showcased greater adaptability and flexibility, particularly in addressing complex problem statements. A neural network classifier achieved 88.05% accuracy in distinguishing between the two code origins, with comments ratio, maintainability index, and cyclomatic complexity being the most significant differentiators. These findings highlight the complementary roles of AI and human contributions in software development, suggesting strategic integration of both for enhanced efficiency and quality.

The exploration of photon upconversion has led to the development of multifunctional lanthanide-based materials, particularly through the mechanism of photon avalanche, marking a transformative advancement in material science. In this study, yttrium vanadate upconversion nanocrystalline phosphors (UCNCPs) activated by Ho 3+ /Er 3+ /Tm 3+ /Yb 3+ ions are reported. These UCNCPs demonstrate a remarkable ability in the photon avalanche, offering highly intense and tunable emissions across the visible spectrum at room temperature under low excitation power of 980 nm laser. The average number of photons involved in the UC process at threshold pump power, highlighting the intricate interplay of cross-relaxation and energy transfer loops in avalanche mechanism. Notably, these UCNCPs have shown exceptional temperature sensing capabilities, where non-thermally coupled levels of the Ho 3+ and Tm 3+ ions provide higher relative sensitivity and accuracy than thermally coupled levels of Er 3+ ions. The versatility of these UCNCPs is further established by their application in solid-state lighting, where they can produce vibrant red, green, blue, and warm-white light, and in security, serving as multi-level anti-counterfeiting inks that respond to 980 nm laser illumination. These developments not only pave the way for more energy-efficient lighting solutions but also offer new avenues for enhancing the security of valuable items. The temperature sensing capabilities of these phosphors add another layer of functionality, making them ideal for high-tech applications ranging from medical diagnostics to environmental monitoring.

Routing algorithms and the hierarchical three-dimensional grid architecture of satellite-based networks (SN) are presented. The performance of the proposed architecture and the routing algorithms are analyzed. Simulation of the routing algorithm based on the extended OPNET platform is performed. It is shown in simulation that the proposed three-dimensional satellite-based network architecture outperforms other SN architectures, and the corresponding routing algorithms have superior performances in simplicity, expandability, robustness and high-speed convergence. The full protocols and the related algorithms of routing and switching for the satellite-based networks then can be proposed and verified on an OPNET platform. © 2003 IEEE.

Prominent organizations, currently, have analytical data-driven tool to support their decision making. A chart-like dashboard is the most appropriate tool to make integrated decisions encompassing multiple functions based on relevance information systems. Such tools, however, are commonly used in commercial firms rather than in the public organizations, especially in the education sections. It is crucial that several missions for the higher education in Thailand, such as graduate performance, research study, academic services to the society, and art & culture preservation, need a decision supporting tool to accomplish such goals. In this paper, we propose the dashboard framework for Higher Education, called TheDB (Thailand higher education DashBoard). It is generally very challenging for the higher education to have their own dashboards for different levels in the organization. We have implemented TheDB framework in nursing colleges of Public Health Ministry. In addition, they explicit their work operation via the dashboard for education quality assurance audited and approved by both related authorize organizations, including Thailand Nursing Council.
